Yes—AMD already lets owners of some supported laptops reserve part of unified system memory as dedicated graphics memory. The feature is called Variable Graphics Memory (VGM), and it is available on supported Ryzen AI 300 and later systems. It can help with workloads that need a larger reported graphics-memory pool, but it does not add physical RAM, increase memory bandwidth, or guarantee higher gaming frame rates.

What AMD Variable Graphics Memory does

AMD documented VGM in 2025. It changes how a portion of a laptop’s unified physical memory is reserved and presented to the integrated GPU: Windows sees the reserved portion as dedicated graphics memory, and that memory is no longer available to the CPU as ordinary system RAM. The memory chips themselves do not move or change. AMD’s VGM FAQ describes the allocation and its trade-offs.

Memory type Where it comes from How it is used
System RAM The laptop’s unified memory pool Available to Windows and applications
VGM / dedicated graphics memory The same physical memory pool Reserved for the integrated GPU and unavailable to the CPU as ordinary RAM while reserved
Shared graphics memory System memory made available dynamically Additional memory the GPU can use without being part of the fixed VGM reservation

VGM is related to, but not interchangeable with, an older BIOS option called UMA Frame Buffer Size. Some laptops expose a fixed UMA setting; that does not establish support for AMD’s newer VGM controls.

Which AMD laptops support VGM?

Ryzen AI 300 and later

AMD says VGM was introduced with Ryzen AI 300-series processors and later platforms. That does not mean every laptop with one of those processors exposes the setting: support also depends on the laptop maker’s firmware, driver package and configuration. AMD’s Ryzen AI Max announcement discusses the feature on supported systems.

Ryzen AI Max and Max+

VGM matters most on Ryzen AI Max/Max+ systems with large unified-memory configurations. AMD documents configurations from 32GB to 128GB and says a 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system can allocate up to 96GB to graphics workloads. That figure applies to that high-memory configuration, not to ordinary Ryzen AI laptops. AMD also lists 256GB/s unified-memory bandwidth for the Strix Halo platform; changing VGM allocation does not raise that bandwidth.

AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo user guide says the platform ships with a preconfigured allocation and allows manual adjustment on Windows or Linux.

Older Ryzen laptops and laptops with discrete GPUs

Older Ryzen laptops may offer a UMA Frame Buffer or similar BIOS setting, but that is not proof that the laptop supports VGM. And VGM applies to the integrated GPU: it does not turn laptop RAM into physical VRAM for a separate GeForce or Radeon graphics chip.

How to change VGM in Windows

  1. Install a compatible graphics driver. Start with the laptop maker’s driver if available; OEM packages can include device-specific power, display-switching and sleep/wake support.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the Windows desktop and open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  3. Go to Performance → Tuning → Variable Graphics Memory.
  4. Select an available allocation or preset, then apply the change.
  5. Restart the laptop. AMD says a restart is needed because the setting changes the memory allocation at the BIOS level.

Depending on the processor, memory capacity, OEM firmware and driver branch, the controls may offer presets such as Default, Medium, High or Custom; not every laptop will show the same choices. AMD’s VGM FAQ describes the setting and restart requirement.

How much memory should you allocate?

There is no universal gaming allocation. Treat any change as a test, not a guaranteed optimization. The more RAM you reserve, the less remains for Windows, games and background applications.

Total laptop RAM Practical starting point Why
16GB Keep Default or the factory allocation A large reservation can leave too little ordinary RAM and cause paging or stutter.
32GB Start with Default; test a moderate increase only for a specific memory limit Some headroom exists, but games and other applications still need CPU-visible memory.
64GB Test a moderate or higher setting if a game or GPU workload is constrained by its reported memory allocation The system has more room to reserve memory, but the benefit remains workload-dependent.
128GB Ryzen AI Max/Max+ Consider a larger allocation for large AI, compute or graphics workloads; for games, test only as needed AMD documents up to 96GB for graphics workloads on a 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system; that is not a general gaming recommendation.

AMD says its Ryzen AI Halo platform’s default allocation is intended to be suitable out of the box. Its guidance also warns that an incorrect allocation can reduce system performance.

Will diverting RAM improve gaming performance?

Sometimes a game or graphics application may benefit from being able to use a larger reported dedicated-memory pool. Some titles use that figure when choosing texture settings, enabling high-quality assets or deciding whether to show a low-VRAM warning. A larger allocation may therefore remove a memory threshold or help avoid an allocation problem.

That is different from making the GPU faster. VGM does not increase the integrated GPU’s compute resources, memory bandwidth, power budget or cooling. A game limited by shader performance or GPU throughput is unlikely to gain much from a larger reservation alone. A CPU-heavy game can even fare worse if its ordinary RAM is squeezed. Windows and games may also report dedicated and shared memory differently, so the displayed figure is not evidence of a separate, faster VRAM bank.

To assess a change, compare the same game and save or benchmark sequence before and after, keeping resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, frame generation, power mode, driver and game version constant. Look beyond average FPS: check 1% lows, stutter, texture pop-in and general system responsiveness. Restore the original setting if the change makes those results worse.

Why AMD highlights AI and GPU-memory workloads

The clearest use case for a large VGM allocation is software that needs a substantial GPU-memory pool, including local language models, image generation, professional visualization and GPU compute. AMD says VGM can reduce performance penalties when an application spills from a smaller dedicated allocation into shared memory; this is not a promise that every game will run faster. For large Vulkan and llama.cpp workloads on Ryzen AI Max+, AMD’s July 2025 guidance specifies Adrenalin 25.8.1 WHQL or newer for the expanded Windows capability. That version requirement is for the documented AI functionality, not a universal minimum for gaming VGM. AMD’s AI workload guidance covers that driver qualification.

If the VGM control is missing

  • Check the exact processor model; not every AMD Ryzen laptop supports VGM.
  • Check the laptop maker’s support page for its latest BIOS and graphics driver, and install the OEM graphics package first.
  • Confirm that AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is installed and then inspect Performance → Tuning again.
  • If the control remains absent, the OEM may not expose VGM, or the laptop may offer only a different UMA or graphics-memory setting. Do not force a hidden BIOS option.
  • If the laptop is a Ryzen AI Max PRO workstation, its controls may use a separate AMD Software: PRO and BIOS workflow.

Some BIOS menus use labels such as “UMA Frame Buffer Size,” “Graphics Memory” or “Dedicated Graphics Memory.” Their meaning and behavior vary by system. If an allocation change causes instability or poor performance, return to Default, Auto or the original value and restart.

Linux configuration on Ryzen AI Halo systems

AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo documentation gives this Linux control path: open AMD Ryzen AI Developer Center → Settings → Graphics Performance Settings, adjust the shared-video-memory allocation, apply the change and reboot.

AMD also documents an advanced command-line method for Ryzen AI Halo-style systems through its Linux image-generation playbook:

sudo apt install pipx
pipx ensurepath
pipx install amd-debug-tools
amd-ttm
amd-ttm --set <NUM>

AMD’s examples express the value in gigabytes, and a reboot is required. The playbook recommends setting minimum dedicated VRAM to 0.5GB in BIOS when the goal is to maximize Linux shared memory. These instructions are platform-specific, not a general procedure for every AMD laptop.

Should you buy a laptop for VGM?

VGM is a useful control when a powerful integrated GPU and ample unified memory need a larger allocation for a particular workload. It is not a substitute for a discrete gaming GPU, and buying a high-memory Ryzen AI Max system solely for ordinary gaming is difficult to justify on this feature alone. Compare the actual GPU performance, cooling and power limits, memory capacity and the games you play. For local AI, visualization or compute that benefits from a large memory pool, a 64GB or 128GB Ryzen AI Max configuration may make more sense; confirm that the exact laptop firmware exposes VGM before buying.

AMD’s documented example of allocating up to 96GB applies to a 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 configuration, not to lower-capacity laptops. A 128GB configuration is most compelling for unusually memory-heavy AI or professional graphics work, rather than as a way to raise game FPS.
