It does not, by itself, prove that you are banned or that the destination is malicious. Other possibilities include a limited account, a URL shortener or redirect, an accidental parser match, a temporary false positive, or deletion of the entire item containing the link.
Steam documents the issue under Hidden or Removed Links. Use the checks below to identify which situation you have and replace the link without weakening your account security.

What “link removed” can mean
The wording and where it appears matter. Steam can act on the URL itself, render it differently for other users, or remove the surrounding content.
| What you see | Likely interpretation |
|---|---|
{LINK REMOVED} |
The URL was replaced or suppressed by a Community filter. |
{LINK REMOVED - Please don't spam, and be wary of scams.} |
A stronger safety warning attached to a filtered link; it is not a finding that the destination is definitely malicious. |
| The address is visible but not clickable | Steam rendered it as text, or the posting surface does not permit that kind of hyperlink. |
| You can see the link but recipients see the warning | Filtering or rendering may occur after transmission. Historical reporting describes recipients seeing a replacement that the sender did not clearly see: TorrentFreak’s chat report. |
| The address works in a browser but not in Steam | Steam’s rules, account status, URL format, or posting surface can reject it even when the page is online. |
| A profile, guide, Workshop item, review, or forum thread is missing | The whole item may have been moderated, deleted, or made private. That is different from one URL being filtered. |
A browser opening the page proves only that the destination responds. It does not override Steam’s Community filtering decision.

Why Steam removes or hides links
Suspicious destinations, redirects, and reputation signals
Steam does not publish every rule in its link filter. Automated checks may consider phishing risk, fake Steam login pages, malware downloads, trade scams, spam, redirect chains, domain reputation, URL patterns, or a destination that cannot be inspected reliably. A legitimate page can therefore be caught because of its domain, path, redirect behavior, or reputation rather than the exact page you intended to share.
Historical reports involving MEGA, 4shared, and Pirate Bay-related URLs show that file-hosting and piracy-associated destinations have sometimes been treated aggressively; those reports from 2016–2018 are evidence of past behavior, not a current official blocklist. See the MEGA report.
URL shorteners and redirect services
Shortened addresses such as bit.ly, tinyurl, t.co-style links, monetized redirects, and custom redirect domains hide the final destination. They can be changed later, chained through several pages, and are common in spam and phishing campaigns. That makes automated inspection harder.
A Steam Community report from October 20–21, 2025 described shortened links in a profile information box being removed, with commenters recommending the complete destination URL: Steam discussion. This is community evidence, not a statement that Valve bans every shortened link.

Limited Steam accounts
Steam’s support material connects hidden Community links with limited accounts. A limited account can still log in and use Steam while having Community capabilities restricted, including hyperlink posting in some contexts. Check your account status through Steam Support’s Hidden or Removed Links information before assuming a site-wide block.
A Steam Community discussion quotes restrictions that can affect other Community activities as well, but interface labels and eligibility rules can change. Treat that discussion as guidance, not a current policy table: Community discussion.
Accidental URL detection
Steam’s older forum parser has been reported to interpret ordinary punctuation as a URL-like expression. One documented example is three dots followed immediately by letters or numbers, such as ...example. Similar problems can occur when punctuation is attached to domain-like text or when BBCode and Markdown-style formatting are interpreted unexpectedly. The December 2024 report is at Steam Community.
Temporary false positives or changed behavior
A link that worked previously can later be removed if the destination begins redirecting, its reputation changes, Steam’s filters change, the account or posting surface changes, or the filter produces a false positive. Reports of internal Steam achievement links and social-media links being removed establish that failure mode, but do not establish a particular Valve policy change. Examples include this 2025 report and a SteamGifts profile report.

How to troubleshoot a removed link
- Inspect the address. Check whether it is shortened, redirected, misspelled, unusually obscure, or aimed at a download, login, trade, or file-hosting page. Remove tracking parameters when they are unnecessary and identify the canonical destination.
- Use the full destination URL. Replace the short or redirecting address with the complete HTTPS URL on the organization’s genuine domain. Do not disguise it with encoding, inserted spaces, unusual punctuation, or another redirect service.
- Verify it outside Steam. Open the full address in a normal browser. Confirm the spelling and HTTPS connection, make sure the page belongs to the expected organization, watch for unexpected redirects or downloads, and never enter Steam credentials on an unfamiliar domain. This safety check does not guarantee Steam will accept the link.
- Check account status. Open Steam Support and review the Limited Account information in Hidden or Removed Links. If every hyperlink is affected while ordinary posting still works, an account or surface-specific restriction is more plausible than a single bad domain.
- Remove parser ambiguity. If you did not intend to post a URL, add a space after punctuation, put punctuation outside the address, rewrite domain-like text, and remove unnecessary BBCode or formatting markup. For example, rewrite
See...exampleasSee this exampleor place the punctuation after a separated phrase. - Try a direct Steam alternative. Use a direct
steamcommunity.comorstore.steampowered.comaddress, the game’s Steam hub, a pinned developer post, or a built-in profile showcase. A direct Steam URL is safer than a shortened route, although no format is guaranteed in every field. - Contact Steam Support for a persistent false positive. Include the exact text, complete URL, Steam surface (chat, profile, forum, review, guide, Workshop, or announcement), whether it was shortened, a screenshot, your account-status result, and whether other URLs fail. Steam Community moderators and users generally cannot investigate account-specific filtering; use the Support ticket route described in this discussion.
Does “link removed” mean your account is banned?
Usually not from this message alone. Test the scope of the problem:
- You can still log in.
- You can send messages and post text without links.
- You can add friends.
- Market and trade access still works, if your account otherwise qualifies.
- Only one domain, URL format, or posting surface fails.
Those signs fit link filtering or a Community-specific limitation more closely than a full account ban. If multiple unrelated Community functions are disabled, review the account-status information in Steam Support and contact Support rather than inferring a penalty from the placeholder alone.
What to use instead of a risky or rejected link
- Direct canonical URLs: Link to the official developer, publisher, Steam store, Workshop, guide, or profile page.
- Steam-native destinations: Use a game hub, pinned announcement, Workshop page, or built-in profile showcase where it serves the same purpose.
- Plain text: Give the trusted site or project name when a clickable link is unnecessary.
- Support escalation: Ask Steam to review a legitimate URL instead of repeatedly reposting it.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly repost a blocked address.
- Do not obfuscate or encode it to evade the filter; that can look more like spam and makes safety checks harder.
- Do not follow “Steam verification” links or enter credentials on pages that imitate Steam login.
- Do not assume a warning proves the destination is malicious, and do not assume a working browser test proves Steam must allow it.
- Reinstalling Steam, deleting the download cache, or changing launch options normally cannot fix this: the decision is server-side or Community-surface-specific.
Common scenarios
Only one external domain is removed
Compare the full URL with a trusted direct address. Domain reputation, redirect behavior, path, or parameters may be responsible; say that Steam appears to be filtering the URL rather than claiming Valve has published a blacklist.
Every external link is removed
Check Limited Account status, whether the field permits hyperlinks, and whether Steam Community is having a temporary problem. Test a simple direct Steam URL and plain text separately.

A Steam URL is removed
Try the direct steamcommunity.com or store.steampowered.com address instead of a shortened route. A 2025 user report described internal achievement links being removed, so an internal destination is not an absolute guarantee of acceptance.
The sender sees a link but the recipient sees “link removed”
Filtering or substitution may occur during transmission or rendering. Ask the recipient what they see, then verify the canonical URL and avoid reposting a suspicious short link.
No URL was intended
Look for punctuation such as ... directly attached to letters or numbers, domain-like words, or formatting markup. Add spacing and rewrite the sentence.
Bottom line
“Link removed” is best read as a Steam Community safety-filter or account-restriction signal, not an automatic ban notice. Replace shortened links with a verified canonical address, check Limited Account status, fix accidental URL-like punctuation, use Steam-native alternatives, and ask Steam Support to review a legitimate link that remains blocked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my YouTube or social-media link removed?
Steam may be filtering the domain, redirect, URL format, account, or posting surface. A legitimate destination can still produce a false positive.
Can reinstalling Steam fix a removed link?
Usually no. Link filtering and Community restrictions are generally handled server-side, so reinstalling the client, clearing cache, or changing launch options is not a normal fix.
Are URL shorteners allowed on Steam?
They may work in some contexts, but they hide the final destination and are frequently associated with filtering. Use the complete canonical URL instead.
Can I appeal a removed link?
Contact Steam Support with the exact text, full URL, posting location, screenshot, and account-status details. Do not rely on repeated reposts or obfuscation.
