The Radeon RX 5600 XT was a capable 1080p gaming card at launch, but its performance depends on the game and board configuration—and its 6GB of memory and lack of hardware ray tracing are notable limits. January 2020 reviews found it delivered more than 60 fps in most of Tom’s Hardware’s tested games, not every game. That makes it an interesting historical midrange GPU, not a safe bet for every modern game or a current-value recommendation.
What the RX 5600 XT is
AMD launched the RX 5600 XT in January 2020 as a Radeon RX 5000-series graphics card for 1080p gaming, using its RDNA architecture. AMD called it the “ultimate” 1080p gaming card in its launch announcement; that was marketing, rather than an independent performance verdict. AMD announced a US launch MSRP of $279, a period-specific price that says nothing about what the card costs today. AMD’s January 2020 announcement also named partner manufacturers including ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, Sapphire and XFX. Those companies’ cards can differ in cooling, clocks, power limits and firmware.
Specifications and practical meaning
Tom’s Hardware’s 2020 review describes the RX 5600 XT with these specifications. They describe the reviewed product family, not a promise that every partner board has identical clocks or power behavior.
| Specification | Review-reported value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | Navi 10 | AMD RDNA-generation graphics processor. |
| Compute units | 36 | Processing units within the GPU. |
| Stream processors | 2,304 | Shader processors used for graphics workloads. |
| Memory | 6GB GDDR6 | Capacity available for game assets and rendering; less headroom than cards with more memory. |
| Memory bus | 192-bit | The width of the connection between GPU and memory. |
| Board power | 150W | Tom’s Hardware’s product-family figure; partner implementations can vary. |
These figures are from Tom’s Hardware’s RX 5600 XT review. The 6GB capacity is a meaningful constraint when comparing the card with models offering more memory, particularly for newer games with heavier asset demands. The launch-era reviews also note that the card lacks hardware ray tracing, a feature advantage Nvidia highlighted for the RTX 2060 at the time. That historical comparison does not establish which GPU is the better buy today.

1080p performance in launch-era reviews
Tom’s Hardware found the RX 5600 XT exceeded 60 fps at 1080p in most of its test titles, with Metro and Ghost Recon as exceptions. In that same test set, it beat the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and won more comparisons than it lost against the GeForce RTX 2060. Those results support a strong launch-era assessment for conventional, rasterized 1080p gaming, but they apply to the review’s particular hardware, games and settings—not every game or configuration.
Engadget’s January 2020 review likewise positioned the card for high-frame-rate 1080p play and published results from its own test setup. Its frame rates are not portable guarantees: game version, graphics settings, CPU, drivers, partner-card design and test method can all affect results. Neither review establishes performance in current games.

The launch firmware complication
The RX 5600 XT’s launch was complicated by a late VBIOS update that changed board performance. TechRadar says it retested the Sapphire Pulse after installing updated firmware; TechSpot’s review archive also flags the last-minute BIOS upgrade and manual-installation complication. TechRadar’s review and TechSpot’s review summary document the period issue.
For a used card, identify the exact manufacturer and model before relying on any review result. If checking firmware, consult that board maker’s instructions for the precise model, verify the installed version, and consider warranty implications. Do not assume one vendor’s BIOS is suitable for another board or flash firmware casually. These launch accounts do not establish the present support status or firmware history of any specific card.
Who should consider one now?
The RX 5600 XT may be worth evaluating if you already own one or are considering a specific used example for a 1080p-focused system. Judge the exact board, firmware, condition, the games you play and whether 6GB is adequate for them. The launch reviews make a case for its historical raster performance, not a current purchase recommendation.
Current new or used prices, availability, driver-support status and performance in modern games were not established by the cited material. Compare a real listing against current alternatives and check current game-specific benchmarks before buying; the 2020 MSRP and launch results cannot settle present-day value.
