AMD Ryzen 7 8700G Review: 1080p Gaming Without a Graphics Card

AMD's Ryzen 7 8700G delivers credible no-GPU gaming through its Radeon 780M integrated graphics. It can handle selected 1080p games, but expect reduced settings, fast dual-channel DDR5, and realistic expectations—not universal 1080p/60 AAA performance.

The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G is one of the few desktop processors that can form the basis of a genuinely playable gaming PC without a discrete graphics card. Its Radeon 780M integrated GPU can handle selected 1080p games, but modern AAA gaming still requires reduced settings and realistic expectations.

The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G is one of the few desktop processors that can form the basis of a genuinely playable gaming PC without a discrete graphics card. Its Radeon 780M integrated GPU can handle esports, older, indie, and well-optimized games at 1080p with sensible settings, and some more demanding games become playable with reduced image quality or upscaling.

That does not make it a universal 1080p/60 chip. Modern AAA games often require low settings, a lower internal resolution, or a move to 720p. The 8700G’s strongest use case is a compact or transitional PC: buy one system now without a graphics card, play a substantial library, and add a discrete GPU later if your requirements grow.

What is the Ryzen 7 8700G?

The Ryzen 7 8700G is an AM5 desktop APU from AMD’s Ryzen 8000G family. It combines:

  • Eight Zen 4 CPU cores and 16 threads
  • A 4.2GHz base clock and boost clocks up to 5.1GHz
  • Radeon 780M integrated graphics based on AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture
  • A 65W default TDP, configurable from 45W to 65W
  • DDR5 memory support and an AM5 socket
  • EXPO memory overclocking, Precision Boost Overdrive, and an unlocked design
  • An integrated NPU for supported AI workloads

AMD launched the processor at a suggested price of $329. That is the historical launch MSRP, not a current retail price; the value calculation should use the price available when you build.

AMD’s specifications list 8MB of L2 cache and 16MB of L3 cache. AMD’s launch material also describes the chip as having 24MB of total cache. Those figures are different ways of presenting the cache hierarchy, not a reason to treat the specifications as contradictory.

Radeon 780M is the reason to buy it

Most desktop processors with integrated graphics are primarily intended to provide display output, video playback, and basic desktop acceleration. The 8700G is different because its Radeon 780M is powerful enough to make gaming without a graphics card a realistic proposition.

The GPU still has a major limitation: it has no dedicated VRAM. It borrows bandwidth from the system’s DDR5 memory. A discrete graphics card has its own high-speed memory pool, while the 8700G’s CPU and GPU must share the available system memory bandwidth. That makes memory selection and configuration unusually important.

Use a matched dual-channel DDR5 kit, not a single stick. Running one memory module can substantially restrict bandwidth and leave integrated-graphics performance on the table. A 32GB kit is a sensible pairing for a modern gaming PC, particularly if you also multitask, use mods, or keep applications open while playing.

Is the Ryzen 7 8700G good for 1080p gaming?

Yes—but “1080p-capable” needs to be read as a conditional performance claim, not a promise of 1080p at high settings and 60 frames per second in every game.

Tom’s Hardware’s testing characterizes the 8700G as suitable for limited 1080p gaming and particularly impressive at 720p without a discrete GPU. TechSpot’s 1080p low-quality testing averaged 49 frames per second in Baldur’s Gate 3, which illustrates both sides of the product: a demanding game can be playable, but the result is not equivalent to 1080p high-quality performance from a modern discrete card.

  • Ryzen 7 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
  • 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
  • Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
  • 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance

The best results will generally come from:

  • Competitive games such as esports titles
  • Older PC games
  • Indie games and less demanding genres
  • Well-optimized games with scalable quality settings
  • Games where low or medium settings are acceptable

Newer, graphically intensive AAA games are the difficult cases. You may need to use low presets, reduce shadows and effects, lower the render scale, enable a game’s upscaler, or target 30 frames per second rather than 60. Some games will still be a poor fit without adding a discrete graphics card.

What the benchmark comparisons show

In Tom’s Hardware’s aggregate testing, the stock 8700G was about 10% faster than the Ryzen 5 8600G and 81% faster than the previous-generation Ryzen 7 5700G at 1080p. The large generational gain is primarily a graphics improvement: Radeon 780M and the newer Phoenix design are much more capable than the older integrated graphics in the 5700G.

Those results should not be interpreted as a guarantee for every game, preset, driver, or memory configuration. Integrated graphics are especially sensitive to memory bandwidth, and average frame rate does not describe frame-time consistency or the settings required to reach it.

HYPR-RX and upscaling: useful, but not free

AMD’s HYPR-RX features can improve the practical experience by rendering a game internally below 1080p and upscaling the result. Radeon Super Resolution is one example. This can raise performance when the GPU is the limiting factor, but it is a visual compromise: the game is not actually being rendered at native 1080p.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upscaling is also not guaranteed to produce a large performance gain. Tom’s Hardware found cases where upscaling from a 990p internal resolution delivered less performance than the standard configuration. Treat HYPR-RX as a game-by-game tool rather than a magic performance multiplier. Compare native and upscaled output, check for shimmering or softness, and keep the setting only when the visual trade-off is worthwhile.

Memory tuning can materially change performance

Because Radeon 780M uses system memory, faster DDR5 can matter more here than it does in a conventional CPU-plus-discrete-GPU build. Tom’s Hardware compared a default DDR5-5200 configuration with a faster DDR5-6400 EXPO/PBO setup and recorded about a 15% gain in aggregate gaming results. Most of that improvement was attributed to the faster memory.

  • For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
  • Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended

The practical recommendation is to buy a matched dual-channel DDR5-6000 memory kit when the price is sensible and the motherboard supports it. DDR5-6000 is not guaranteed on every board, kit, BIOS, or individual processor. Check the motherboard’s qualified vendor list, update the BIOS if appropriate, enable EXPO manually, and test stability. If the system fails to boot or produces errors, step down to a lower memory speed rather than assuming the advertised EXPO profile must work.

Faster memory is not a substitute for a discrete GPU, but it is one of the clearest ways to avoid handicapping the 8700G’s defining feature.

CPU performance: capable, but not a standard Ryzen 7 7000

The 8700G has a strong enough eight-core, 16-thread CPU for gaming, everyday work, streaming, and general desktop use. Its CPU performance is not the main reason to choose it, however.

The APU uses AMD’s Phoenix design, adapted from a mobile-oriented platform for the AM5 desktop socket. Standard Ryzen 7000 desktop processors can have more L3 cache and can be faster in pure CPU workloads. Therefore, a CPU-only benchmark comparison can make the 8700G look less attractive than its integrated graphics capability suggests.

That trade-off is intentional. The 8700G spends platform and silicon resources on a much stronger integrated GPU. If you already have a discrete graphics card, or know that one will be included in the initial build, a conventional Ryzen processor may offer better CPU performance or overall value.

AM5 platform and upgrade limits

The Ryzen 7 8700G uses an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. AMD lists compatibility with A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, X870, X870E, B840, and B850 chipsets on its current product information. For most 8700G builds, a B650 motherboard is the practical middle ground: it offers a useful feature set without requiring the cost of a high-end chipset. A620 can make sense for a basic lower-cost system, while more advanced boards are justified by specific connectivity or expansion requirements.

AMD lists PCIe 4.0 connectivity and 16 usable PCIe lanes for the processor. This is generally adequate for an integrated-graphics system or a later entry-level graphics-card upgrade. It is a meaningful distinction from standard Ryzen 7000 desktop processors, which provide more usable PCIe 5.0 lanes.

  • AMD Wraith Prism Cooler with RGB LED included

For a future high-end graphics card plus several high-speed storage or expansion devices, the 8700G is not the ideal AM5 foundation. For a small PC that starts without a graphics card and may later receive a sensible discrete GPU, the limitation is less important.

Build considerations beyond the processor

Skipping a graphics card does not mean the system is inexpensive by default. The complete build still requires:

  • An AM5 motherboard
  • Dual-channel DDR5 memory
  • An SSD
  • A compatible case, especially if targeting a small-form-factor design
  • A power supply with enough headroom for a future graphics-card upgrade, if planned
  • A suitable CPU cooler and adequate case airflow

Compare the total cost rather than comparing the 8700G alone with a cheaper processor. AM5 motherboards and DDR5 can reduce the apparent savings from omitting a graphics card. If your budget already includes a discrete GPU, a less expensive CPU paired with that GPU may deliver higher gaming performance for the same total spend.

For a no-GPU system, a B650 AM5 motherboard and a properly configured 32GB DDR5 kit are sensible starting points. Choose the board based on rear-I/O requirements, Wi-Fi, storage slots, USB connectivity, physical size, BIOS support, and future expansion—not simply on the chipset name.

Who should buy the Ryzen 7 8700G?

It is a good fit for:

  • A compact or small-form-factor gaming PC where a discrete GPU is inconvenient or undesirable
  • A buyer who wants a working gaming system now and may add a graphics card later
  • Esports, older, indie, and well-optimized games
  • Someone who accepts low or medium settings and occasional upscaling
  • A build where fast, dual-channel DDR5 is already included in the budget

Choose something else when:

  • You already own a discrete graphics card
  • You will definitely buy a graphics card immediately
  • You expect high-refresh-rate AAA gaming at high or ultra settings
  • Your only goal is the lowest possible total system cost
  • You are building a high-end expansion-heavy PC with several fast PCIe devices

Verdict

The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G is the most convincing desktop integrated-graphics platform for buyers who want to play without a discrete GPU. Radeon 780M makes 1080p gaming possible in a meaningful selection of titles, and its advantage over older integrated graphics is substantial.

The qualification is equally important: expect reduced settings, careful memory selection, and game-specific tuning. Native 1080p at high quality and 60 frames per second is not a universal result, and HYPR-RX trades image quality for performance rather than creating free GPU power.

Buy the 8700G for a compact, low-complexity, or transitional gaming PC. If a discrete graphics card is already part of the budget, compare the complete system against a cheaper CPU-plus-GPU build before committing. The 8700G is an excellent integrated-graphics solution—not a replacement for a modern discrete gaming GPU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Ryzen 7 8700G run games at 1080p?

Yes, in selected games and with appropriate settings. Esports, older, indie, and well-optimized games can be playable at 1080p. Demanding modern AAA titles may require low settings, upscaling, 720p, or a lower frame-rate target.

Does the Ryzen 7 8700G need fast RAM?

No. Radeon 780M shares system memory with the CPU, so a matched dual-channel DDR5 kit is important. Faster memory can also improve gaming performance, although exact speeds depend on the motherboard, BIOS, memory kit, and processor.

Can I add a graphics card to the Ryzen 7 8700G later?

It can be a good upgrade path for a compact or transitional system. Its 16 usable PCIe 4.0 lanes are suitable for many entry-level or midrange upgrades, but a conventional Ryzen 7000 processor may be a better basis for a high-end GPU and multiple fast expansion devices.

Is the Ryzen 7 8700G better value than a CPU and discrete GPU?

A conventional CPU paired with an entry-level discrete graphics card may be faster or cheaper if a graphics card is already in the initial budget. The 8700G’s value is strongest when its integrated Radeon 780M lets you avoid buying a GPU immediately.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Ryzen 7 8700G makes no-discrete-GPU 1080p gaming genuinely possible, especially with fast dual-channel DDR5. It is best for compact and transitional PCs, but buyers seeking high-settings AAA gaming or the lowest total cost should compare a conventional CPU and discrete graphics card.
