The Ryzen 7 9800X3D leak is no longer unresolved: AMD announced the eight-core Zen 5 processor on October 31, 2024, and made it available on November 7, 2024. The final chip confirmed most of the leaked headline specifications—4.7 GHz base, up to 5.2 GHz boost, 104 MB total cache, and 120 W TDP—but it requires an AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory, and a separate cooler.
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D was once the subject of an unconfirmed October 2024 leak, but the uncertainty is now resolved: AMD officially announced the processor on October 31, 2024, and it became available on November 7, 2024. The final chip matched most of the important leaked specifications, including eight Zen 5 cores, a 4.7 GHz base clock, a boost clock of up to 5.2 GHz, 104 MB of total cache, and a 120 W default TDP.
The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor is an AM5 desktop CPU aimed primarily at gaming PCs. It requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory, and it does not include a stock cooler.
What the Ryzen 7 9800X3D leak got right
The first reports appeared before AMD had officially announced the chip, so every specification and date needed to be treated as provisional at the time.

Those reports claimed that an eight-core Ryzen 7 9800X3D could sustain up to 5.2 GHz during a heavy Cinebench workload. A Chiphell post reportedly attributed an alleged November 1–5 release window to an AMD employee. Tom’s Hardware cautioned that the clock behavior could have represented an engineering sample or an unusually optimistic result rather than a retail processor.

By October 28, another Tom’s Hardware report described a more complete alleged specification sheet attributed to a European price-comparison listing. It listed eight Zen 5 cores, 16 threads, a 4.7 GHz base clock, a 5.2 GHz boost clock, 120 W TDP, 104 MB of combined cache, an unlocked multiplier, and a November 7 expected launch date.
VideoCardz separately reported that November 7 had become the expected X3D launch date and that leaked packaging pointed specifically to the eight-core Ryzen 7 model as the first product. These reports were useful indicators, but they remained leaks until AMD published the final information.
In retrospect, the core specifications were broadly accurate. The initial November 1–5 window was not the final date, however. November 7, 2024 was the official availability date.

These final specifications come from AMD’s announcement and retail product information. The cache figures are worth reading carefully: 104 MB is the total cache, made up of 8 MB of L2 cache and 96 MB of L3 cache. Calling the chip a “104 MB L3” processor would be incorrect.
Why the 9800X3D’s cache design changed
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D uses AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache design. AMD said it relocated the additional 64 MB cache element below the processor’s core complex die rather than placing it above the cores.

- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
That physical arrangement matters because it puts the Zen 5 cores closer to the cooling solution. AMD’s explanation is that the change helps the cores operate at higher clock speeds, addressing one of the traditional trade-offs associated with stacking extra cache on a gaming CPU.
The result is a processor with 96 MB of total L3 cache: the standard cache plus the 64 MB 3D V-Cache element. AMD also described the 9800X3D as its first X3D processor to be fully unlocked. Its official feature list includes Precision Boost Overdrive, Curve Optimizer, and Ryzen Master support.

What a 9800X3D upgrade requires
AM5 motherboard
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D uses AMD’s AM5 socket. It cannot be installed in an AM4 motherboard, even though both platforms support Ryzen processors. An AM4 owner therefore needs a new motherboard as part of the upgrade rather than just replacing the CPU.

For a new build, check the motherboard’s CPU-support list and BIOS requirements before buying. For an existing AM5 system, a BIOS update may be necessary depending on the board and its installed firmware. The exact update procedure and supported processor list vary by motherboard manufacturer.
Recommended Free Tools
DDR5 memory and EXPO
AM5 systems use DDR5 memory. AMD lists EXPO support for the 9800X3D, allowing compatible memory kits to load tested memory profiles through the motherboard firmware instead of requiring manual timing and voltage configuration.
EXPO is a memory-overclocking profile, not a guarantee that every kit will behave identically on every board. Install matched modules, use the motherboard’s recommended slots, and confirm stability after enabling the profile. If the system fails to boot, clear or reset the memory settings and retry at default speeds before troubleshooting more aggressively.
Cooling
AMD does not include a thermal solution with the processor. A cooler is therefore part of the real platform cost, in addition to the CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance; buyers should select a cooler that explicitly supports AM5 mounting and fits their case.
A 120 W default TDP is not the same thing as a promise that every cooler will deliver identical temperatures or boost behavior. Case airflow, ambient temperature, motherboard power settings, fan curves, and workloads all affect the result. A cooler that is technically compatible may still be a poor choice if it is undersized, poorly mounted, or incompatible with the case’s radiator clearance.

AMD’s performance claims, separated from independent testing
AMD claimed that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivered an average gaming improvement of up to 8% over the previous generation and an average advantage of up to 20% over the competing processor used in AMD’s comparison. AMD also cited a 31% improvement in 1% low frame rate in The Last of Us Part 1.
Those figures are vendor test claims, not universal performance guarantees. Results depend on the graphics card, game, resolution, quality settings, memory configuration, BIOS, drivers, background tasks, and whether the workload is CPU-limited. A 9800X3D can be especially attractive for high-refresh gaming or CPU-limited scenarios, while a GPU-limited system may show a much smaller difference.
The figures should therefore be read as AMD’s reported test results, not as a promise that every game will run 8%, 20%, or 31% faster. Independent reviews should be assessed separately, with attention to the reviewer’s complete test platform and methodology.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the leaked $479 price still the price to pay?
AMD announced a $479 suggested price for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. That is a launch reference price, not a permanent retail price. Actual prices can change with stock, retailer promotions, bundles, regional taxes, seller behavior, and the age of the product.
The AMD retail listing was recorded as out of stock in the dossier’s August 12, 2026 store observation. That is a time-stamped status for AMD’s own store, not a statement about every retailer or the current marketplace. Check current stock, seller identity, warranty terms, and the final delivered price immediately before purchasing.
