The Ryzen 7 9800X3D remains an excellent gaming CPU, but it is no longer the fastest option: in Tom’s Hardware’s August 2026 guide, the newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D is about 3% faster on average, while the 9800X3D is the better-value recommendation when it costs substantially less. HotHardware’s original page 5 gaming tests show why the 9800X3D earned its reputation: it led the tested processors at both 1080p and 4K, though the gap narrowed when the graphics card became the limit.
What page 5 of the review covers
This is the graphics, gaming, and power-consumption section of HotHardware’s six-part Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, published November 6, 2024—not a separate CPU model or generation. The review’s other pages cover platform setup, general CPU benchmarks, productivity workloads, and overclocking.

Its gaming suite includes UL 3DMark Time Spy physics, F1 2024, Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, and The Talos Principle 2. HotHardware used 1080p medium/high settings to make processor differences easier to see, then tested three games at 4K with high/extreme settings, where the GPU plays a larger role. The review reports rankings and test conditions, but this page’s accessible text does not establish every chart value, so exact frame rates and percentage gaps should not be inferred.
What the 9800X3D is—and why its cache matters
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 5 desktop processor with second-generation 3D V-Cache. AMD lists a 4.7 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.2 GHz, 104 MB of combined cache, a 120 W TDP, and the AM5 socket with DDR5 memory. Its November 2024 launch suggested price was $479; that is a launch figure, not a current retail price. See AMD’s launch specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Large L3 cache lets the processor keep more game data close to its cores, reducing some trips to system memory. The payoff depends on the game and scene: simulation, large-world, and CPU-heavy workloads can benefit more than games already waiting on the graphics card. AMD’s selected 1080p comparisons found gains over the 7800X3D ranging from about 1% to 11% across tested titles—not a universal uplift. Those were vendor benchmarks with specified hardware and settings, so they are useful as directional evidence rather than a promise for every PC. AMD’s comparison and test details.
What the gaming results mean
1080p: the clearest view of CPU differences
HotHardware found the 9800X3D ahead of every other processor it tested in its selected 1080p game results. At lower resolution, a powerful GPU can render frames quickly enough that CPU scheduling, game logic, and memory access become more visible constraints. This makes 1080p useful for comparing maximum CPU-limited performance, especially with a high-refresh monitor and a high-end graphics card.
That does not mean every 1080p player will see the same lead. Results vary with the game, GPU, memory timings, BIOS, drivers, and whether the benchmark emphasizes average frame rate, 1% lows, or frame-time consistency. Average FPS describes throughput; 1% lows and frame times help reveal occasional slow frames that can make play feel uneven.

4K: first place can matter less when the GPU is limiting
The 9800X3D also ranked first in HotHardware’s three 4K high-quality game tests, but the differences narrowed. At 4K, especially with demanding image quality or ray tracing, the GPU often determines how quickly frames arrive. A CPU can still affect performance, but a small lead in a GPU-limited test may not translate into a noticeable improvement for a particular player.

A 240 Hz esports monitor and a strong GPU make CPU headroom more valuable than a 60 Hz 4K display in a demanding single-player game. If your GPU is already the bottleneck, putting more of the budget toward graphics performance may improve gaming more than replacing a capable CPU.
Why the 3DMark result is not the same as a game ranking
HotHardware’s 3DMark result combines a broader score with a physics component. Some Intel processors performed better in that physics portion, so the 9800X3D did not necessarily top the overall 3DMark score even though it led the actual game-frame-rate tests in the review group. A synthetic composite score should not be treated as a direct substitute for results in the games you play.

Power, cooling, and platform requirements
HotHardware measured total system power at the wall, not power drawn by the CPU package alone. In its comparison systems, the 9800X3D used more power than the Ryzen 7 9700X, less than the Ryzen 9 9900X and tested Intel processors, and reached peak system consumption close to the 16-core Ryzen 9 7950X. Those outlet readings describe the full test systems and cannot be interpreted as the processor’s wattage in isolation. The review’s monitoring runs generally showed CPU clocks in the 4.7–5.2 GHz range under load. HotHardware’s test and power notes.
The 9800X3D does not include a stock cooler. A buyer needs an AM5-compatible cooler and motherboard, plus DDR5 memory. A capable tower air cooler or quality liquid cooler is a reasonable fit; no particular cooler is established as mandatory by these gaming tests. Cooling can affect noise and sustained boost behavior, but choosing a larger or more expensive cooler does not by itself guarantee higher gaming frame rates. Check motherboard support and update BIOS and platform firmware when resolving memory, stability, or boost issues, particularly on an older AM5 board.
How it compares with alternatives in 2026
| Processor | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 9850X3D | Buyers seeking the highest gaming performance on AM5 and willing to pay for a small lead. | Tom’s Hardware reports roughly 3% higher average gaming performance than the 9800X3D, along with higher power consumption and worse value. Comparison. |
| Ryzen 7 9800X3D | Gaming-focused builds where its price is meaningfully below the 9850X3D. | Not the absolute performance leader; still an AM5/DDR5 platform purchase for buyers starting from scratch. |
| Ryzen 7 7800X3D | Buyers finding it substantially cheaper, or existing AM5 owners who want strong gaming performance without paying for the newest chip. | The 9800X3D is newer and faster, but the upgrade case depends on the actual price gap and whether games are CPU-limited. |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | Mixed-use buyers prioritizing lower power or a lower purchase price over peak CPU-limited gaming performance. | It lacks 3D V-Cache and was less power-hungry than the 9800X3D in HotHardware’s system comparison. |
| Ryzen 9 X3D or other high-core-count CPUs | People who combine gaming with sustained rendering, encoding, compiling, or virtualization. | More cores can improve heavily threaded work, but may be unnecessary cost for a primarily gaming PC. |
| Intel Core Ultra or older Core processors | Buyers with a compatible existing platform or workloads that favor a particular Intel model. | Results depend on workload, power settings, memory, and test method; one review does not establish universal superiority. |
In its August 2026 gaming CPU guide, Tom’s Hardware names the 9800X3D its overall best gaming CPU in the $300–$400 category, while identifying the 9850X3D as technically faster. That ranking uses the guide’s 17-game suite and reflects its price context, not a guarantee that the same model is the best value at every retailer or in every region. Tom’s Hardware’s current guide.

Who should buy it—and who should wait
New gaming PC builders
Consider the 9800X3D if gaming is the priority, the build includes a strong GPU, and its price is clearly below the 9850X3D. Compare total system cost—not only CPU prices—including an AM5 motherboard, DDR5, cooler, and graphics card. A premium processor is a poor trade if it forces a meaningful downgrade to the GPU that will drive performance in your games.
High-refresh-rate players
The chip makes the strongest case for players targeting high frame rates in CPU-sensitive games, particularly with a powerful GPU. The benefit depends on the title and display target; use benchmarks for your actual games when possible rather than treating a review’s 1080p lead as a fixed real-world gain.
4K gamers and current 7800X3D owners
If you play mostly GPU-limited 4K games, first check whether your graphics card is holding back frame rates. A 7800X3D owner should upgrade only when a high-refresh target, CPU-bound game, or favorable upgrade cost makes the likely improvement worthwhile; the newer model’s lead is not automatically valuable in an ordinary GPU-limited setup.

AM4 owners, budget buyers, and productivity-focused users
An AM4-to-AM5 move involves a new motherboard and DDR5 memory as well as the processor, so compare the complete platform cost with a less expensive upgrade on your existing system. If the graphics card is modest, or the budget is tight, a cheaper CPU and stronger GPU may make more sense. For long rendering, encoding, compiling, or virtual-machine sessions, prioritize core count and workload benchmarks; the 9800X3D’s eight cores are capable, but it is not a high-core-count workstation part.
Verdict
HotHardware’s page 5 supports the 9800X3D’s original gaming reputation: it led the tested gaming processors in its 1080p and 4K results, with smaller separation in GPU-limited 4K tests. In 2026, the more useful verdict is conditional: choose it for a high-end gaming build when it is substantially cheaper than the 9850X3D, not because it is still the fastest CPU outright. For a GPU-limited system, an existing 7800X3D, or a productivity-heavy workload, compare the entire upgrade cost and the alternatives before spending more on the processor.
