Short answer: the standard AMD Ryzen Z2 may be up to roughly 8% faster than the Ryzen Z1 Extreme in a particular test, but that is not a universal gaming advantage. Both chips use Zen 4 CPU cores and RDNA 3 graphics with 12 graphics cores, so the result is more likely to depend on power limits, memory, cooling, firmware, drivers and the handheld itself than on a major architectural leap.
There is also an important naming trap: Ryzen Z2 and Ryzen Z2 Extreme are different processors. Z2 Extreme uses Zen 5, RDNA 3.5 graphics and 16 graphics cores. Results showing larger gains for Z2 Extreme must not be presented as evidence that the standard Z2 is 8% faster than the Z1 Extreme.

Ryzen Z2 vs. Z1 Extreme: the specifications
| Processor | CPU | Graphics | Graphics cores | Configurable TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen Z2 | 8 cores/16 threads, Zen 4 | RDNA 3 | 12 | 15–30 W |
| Ryzen Z1 Extreme | 8 cores/16 threads, Zen 4 | RDNA 3 | 12 | 9–30 W |
| Ryzen Z2 Extreme | 8 cores/16 threads, Zen 5 | RDNA 3.5 | 16 | 15–35 W |
AMD lists the standard Z2 with boost speeds of up to 5.1 GHz and 24 MB of total cache. The Z1 Extreme has the same core and graphics configuration on paper, although its listed power range begins lower, at 9 W. AMD’s Ryzen Z-series specifications are the appropriate reference when checking a handheld’s exact processor.

The base Ryzen Z1 is not the same comparison. It has six CPU cores and only four graphics cores. A claim that Z2 beats “Z1” by 8% would therefore describe a different matchup from Z2 versus Z1 Extreme.

What “up to 8% better” actually means
“Up to 8%” describes a maximum reported result, not an average improvement across every game. To judge the number properly, a benchmark needs to identify:
- the exact processor and handheld model;
- the game, application or synthetic test;
- average frame rate versus 1% lows or minimum frame rate;
- resolution, graphics preset and upscaling settings;
- power mode and sustained package power;
- memory capacity, speed and configuration;
- BIOS, driver and operating-system versions; and
- whether both systems were tested under equivalent cooling and background-load conditions.
Without those details, “8% faster” is too broad. An increase from 30 to 32.4 frames per second is technically 8%, but it will not feel like a fundamentally different experience. At 50 FPS, an 8% increase reaches 54 FPS; that may be more useful on a high-refresh display, provided frame pacing is also good.
Why the standard Z2 may be faster despite similar hardware
Power limits
Handheld APUs are highly sensitive to wattage. A Z2 running at 30 W can outperform a Z1 Extreme limited to 25 W, even if the chips are otherwise closely matched. Vendor performance modes, battery operation, plugged-in operation and “Turbo” profiles can all change the result.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe reverse is also possible: a Z2 handheld with a conservative power limit may lose to a Z1 Extreme device allowed to sustain higher clocks. The nominal TDP range is not a guarantee of performance, and the same APU can behave differently in two chassis.

Cooling and sustained clocks
A larger heatsink, stronger fan curve or better airflow can let a handheld maintain its power target for longer. Short benchmark bursts may favor peak clock speed, while long gaming sessions reveal whether the device throttles. A comparison between different handhelds therefore measures the complete platform, not just the processor.
Memory bandwidth and capacity
Integrated graphics use system memory. Memory speed, bandwidth, capacity and the amount reserved for graphics can affect frame rates and stutter, particularly in modern games. A 32 GB Z1 Extreme system is not automatically equivalent to a 16 GB Z2 system, and a newer handheld may use faster memory than the older model.
Memory is usually soldered in gaming handhelds, so it cannot be upgraded later. Reports on newer Z2 Extreme hardware have also identified memory bandwidth as a potential performance limitation, illustrating why the APU name alone cannot predict gaming results. See PC Gamer’s memory-bandwidth analysis for that separate Z2 Extreme issue.

A test at 720p cannot be compared directly with one at 1080p or 1600p. Lower resolutions can shift a game from GPU-limited to CPU-limited, while higher resolutions place more pressure on the graphics engine and memory bandwidth. Upscaling, frame generation and driver-level enhancements can alter the apparent FPS as well.

Do not confuse Ryzen Z2 with Ryzen Z2 Extreme
Ryzen Z2 Extreme is a materially different chip. It has Zen 5 CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 graphics and 16 graphics cores, compared with Zen 4, RDNA 3 and 12 graphics cores in both the standard Z2 and Z1 Extreme. AMD lists a 15–35 W configurable TDP for Z2 Extreme.
Independent reports have produced mixed results for Z2 Extreme handhelds. One Tom’s Hardware comparison reported an approximately 8.5% lead at 17 W and about 6% at 30 W against Intel Lunar Lake. A Tom’s Guide review reported larger gains in specific MSI Claw A8 tests, while other testing of the Lenovo Legion Go 2 found only marginal advantages in selected comparisons.
Those results are not contradictory: they use different devices, power profiles, memory configurations and workloads. More importantly, they do not prove that the standard Ryzen Z2 is 8% faster than the Z1 Extreme.
What matters in actual games

- CPU-heavy strategy and simulation titles;
- older DirectX 11 games and newer DirectX 12 or Vulkan games;
- titles affected by shader compilation or traversal stutter; and
- tests with and without upscaling or frame generation.
Average FPS is only one part of the result. Stronger 1% lows, steadier frame pacing, lower fan noise or the ability to maintain the same performance at a lower wattage may matter more than a small peak-FPS increase.
Efficiency also requires controlled testing. To show that a Z2 handheld is more efficient, reviewers should compare the same game and settings at the same frame-rate target, then measure power draw, temperature, noise and battery runtime. A higher score at a higher wattage is a performance gain, not automatically an efficiency gain.

If you already own a Z1 Extreme handheld
An 8% maximum result alone is unlikely to justify an upgrade. A newer handheld may still be worthwhile if it also provides a substantially better display, battery, cooling system, controls, storage, acoustics or software experience. Otherwise, the existing Z1 Extreme remains too close in core hardware for a small workload-specific gain to guarantee a visibly better experience.

Compare complete handhelds at equal power limits and similar memory configurations. A discounted Z1 Extreme may offer better value if the newer Z2 device is more expensive or runs at a lower sustained wattage. The Z2 becomes more attractive when it is similarly priced and brings faster memory, better cooling, longer battery life at the same performance, or superior ergonomics.

If you want a genuine architectural upgrade
Look at Z2 Extreme devices, but evaluate the whole handheld rather than assuming the chip’s specification guarantees a fixed uplift. Cooling, memory bandwidth, screen resolution and vendor power profiles can amplify or reduce its advantage.
If battery life is the priority
Focus on 15–20 W testing, not only maximum-TDP benchmarks. A handheld that reaches the same frame rate at lower power can be more useful than one that posts a higher short-term peak.
If you play demanding AAA games
Prioritize graphics performance, memory bandwidth, cooling, RAM capacity and sustained power. If you play competitive games, also consider display refresh rate, frame pacing and input latency. SteamOS buyers should confirm that the exact model, firmware and vendor features support the intended operating system.

Product listings can use “Ryzen Z2” loosely while referring to different processors. Verify the manufacturer’s technical specification for the complete name:
- Ryzen Z2;
- Ryzen Z2 Extreme;
- Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme;
- Ryzen Z2 Go; or
- Ryzen Z2 A.
These are not interchangeable. Z2 Go and Z2 A use fewer CPU cores and older CPU or graphics architectures, while Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme belongs to a separate high-end tier. Do not compare a headline for one variant with benchmark results from another.
Verdict
The standard Ryzen Z2 should not be treated as a guaranteed 8% upgrade over the Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The claim can be credible as a workload- and platform-specific maximum, but the chips share the same broad Zen 4 and RDNA 3 configuration. Power, cooling, memory, firmware, drivers and test settings can easily determine which handheld is faster.
For buyers, compare complete devices at equal wattage and price. For existing Z1 Extreme owners, the extra performance alone is unlikely to justify an upgrade. Anyone expecting a major generational jump should examine Ryzen Z2 Extreme handhelds separately—and should still judge them by sustained performance, battery life, thermals and value rather than by one percentage.
