In June 2024, AMD said its then-upcoming standard Ryzen 9000 processors were not expected to overtake the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in gaming. The specific comparison AMD named was the 7800X3D versus the Ryzen 7 9700X: AMD expected the X3D chip to remain faster, but by a smaller margin than was typical between X3D and non-X3D processors. That was AMD’s forecast, not an independent benchmark result.
What AMD said about Ryzen 9000 and the 7800X3D
In a Tom’s Hardware report published June 11, 2024, Donny Woligroski, AMD Senior Technical Marketing Manager of Consumer Processors, discussed whether the Ryzen 9 9950X would take the gaming-performance crown. He said AMD’s tests showed Ryzen 9000 ahead of the competition, but that X3D remained ahead in gaming within AMD’s own comparison. Woligroski specifically said the Ryzen 7 7800X3D would be faster than the then-upcoming Ryzen 7 9700X, though perhaps not by as much as people might expect.
The distinction matters: his answer was not that every Ryzen 9000 CPU would lose to every X3D chip, nor that Ryzen 9000 would trail competing processors. It was a narrowly framed expectation about the standard Ryzen 9000 generation and AMD’s own 7800X3D, with the 9700X named as the non-X3D comparison.
What the statement did—and did not—establish
- It was an AMD expectation. The comment came from an AMD representative during Computex 2024 and was reported before Ryzen 9000 launch reviews. It should not be treated as an independent test result or a substitute for game-by-game review data.
- It named two particular CPUs. The direct comparison in Woligroski’s answer was the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 7 9700X. The broader question mentioned the Ryzen 9 9950X, but the quoted comparison did not establish how every Ryzen 9000 model would perform against every X3D model.
- It concerned standard Ryzen 9000, not later X3D models. Standard Ryzen 9000 and Ryzen 9000X3D are distinct product categories. The June statement does not settle comparisons involving later X3D processors or identify the current fastest gaming CPU.
How later X3D data changes the context
AMD’s November 2024 Ryzen 7 9800X3D performance material reported an average 8% generational game-performance uplift over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. That is AMD’s vendor-reported figure for its 2024 testing at 1080p high settings, not an independent benchmark or a general result for all games and systems. AMD’s material identifies a multi-game test set and test hardware, and notes that system configurations and results may vary.

AMD’s current desktop processor page lists later Ryzen 9000X3D products and attributes gaming benefits to 3D V-Cache. It also advertises an approximately 16% single-thread IPC uplift for Zen 5 versus the preceding generation. That is AMD’s manufacturer claim about IPC, not a direct measure of gaming frame rates. These later products and figures are separate from the June 2024 forecast about standard Ryzen 9000.

A CPU ranking is useful only when the test conditions are clear. For a meaningful comparison between the 7800X3D and a Ryzen 9000 model, look for the exact CPU SKUs, the games tested, resolution, graphics card, memory and other test-system details, and whether the results come from a manufacturer or an independent reviewer. Resolution and GPU limits can affect how clearly a CPU difference appears, so a result under one setup is not automatically a universal ranking.
Rank #2
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
For the specific June 2024 claim, the accurate takeaway is that AMD expected the 7800X3D to beat the standard Ryzen 7 9700X in gaming by a narrower-than-usual X3D margin. That historical statement alone cannot answer whether a particular owner should upgrade from a 7800X3D; that decision requires current, model-specific independent benchmarks for the games and system in question.
