AMD says FSR 4 will expand to handheld PCs by the end of 2026, but it has not named compatible devices or confirmed Steam Deck support. The reported target is a broad rollout statement—not a device-by-device compatibility list—and the available reports do not give a specific release date.
What AMD has said about FSR 4 on handhelds
In reports published October 7–8, 2026, TechSpot and Hardware Busters said AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh told Korean media in Seoul that FSR 4 would expand to APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices by the end of the year. Coverage of The Elec interview translated his statement as: “We will expand FSR 4 across our product lineup, including APUs, gaming laptops and handheld devices, by the end of this year.” The original Korean wording has not been independently checked, so this is best read as a reported target rather than a confirmed launch schedule. The reports do not identify which handhelds will get FSR 4, whether support will depend on a particular APU generation, or which individual FSR 4 technologies will be available. AMD’s current FSR page describes FSR “Redstone” as a suite of machine-learning gaming technologies and lists select Radeon RX 7000- and RX 9000-series graphics products, with RX 6000-series support described as launching in 2027. That discrete-GPU compatibility information does not establish compatibility for handheld APUs.

There is no confirmed Steam Deck release schedule in the reports, and they do not say the Deck is either included or excluded. Steam’s SteamOS installation and repair page identifies Steam Deck among official SteamOS-powered devices and notes improved SteamOS compatibility for other AMD-powered PCs; it does not announce FSR 4 support on the Deck.

- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
That leaves the Deck’s status open. A broad commitment to bring FSR 4 to handhelds is not enough to conclude that every existing handheld—or any particular model—will receive it. Check AMD’s FSR page and official device or software announcements for explicit compatibility confirmation as the rollout develops.
Why a handheld’s processor is only part of the answer
AMD’s Ryzen Z1 and Z2 processor page positions those processors for handheld PC gaming and says FSR versions are available in select games and supported on select AMD products. It does not say that every Z1- or Z2-based device supports FSR 4. Nor does the reported expansion announcement supply a compatible APU list. AMD’s handhelds page provides general product context, not a model-by-model FSR 4 confirmation.

Even when a device’s hardware is officially supported, the game must also offer the relevant FSR feature. AMD describes FSR availability as game- and product-dependent; hardware compatibility alone does not guarantee an FSR 4 option in a particular game’s settings. For a reliable answer, look for both an official device or APU confirmation and confirmation that the game supports the feature.

What to check before buying or updating
- Device or APU confirmation: Look for the exact handheld model or processor generation in an official compatibility announcement, rather than inferring support from the phrase “handheld devices.”
- Game support: Confirm that the specific game offers FSR 4. A supported device does not make the feature available in every title.
- Timing: Treat “by the end of 2026” as the reported target; the reports name no driver release date.
- Feature scope: Verify which FSR 4 or Redstone features a device can use. The reports do not specify that scope or provide verified handheld performance figures.
No named handheld benchmark or verified frame-rate, battery-life, or image-quality figure is established in the reports cited here. Until AMD publishes device-specific details, performance claims for a particular handheld would be speculation.
Quick Recap

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
