If American Truck Simulator (ATS) does not show a manually downloaded mod, check the user Documents folder first: Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod. The Steam installation directory is not the normal location for manual mods. Then turn off the Mod Manager option that limits the list to Steam Workshop items, verify that the download is an actual ATS package rather than an unopened archive, and check the mod’s declared game-version compatibility.

Those checks separate an undiscovered file from a mod that is visible but unusable. The procedure below is aimed primarily at Windows and Steam installations, which are the configurations covered by current SCS Software support guidance.

Start with the symptom, not a random reinstall
ATS can fail at several different stages. A mod may be in the wrong directory, hidden by a Mod Manager filter, trapped inside a .zip or .rar, rejected because its metadata targets another game version, or blocked by Windows permissions. Treating all of those as the same problem wastes time.

Use one branch at a time. Move to the next check only after the previous one is correct.

Use the correct ATS mod folder
The Windows path for manual downloads
Ordinary downloaded ATS mods belong in the singular folder named mod inside the user’s American Truck Simulator documents directory:
Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod
The folder is under the user’s Documents location, not under the Steam installation directory. This distinction is the most important location check. SCS Software forum global moderator Madkine stated on January 24, 2024: “The mod (not mods) folder is under my documents and not under steam.”

If the folder does not exist
Run ATS once, reach the game normally, then quit. SCS support reports that the user folders may be created on the first run. Check Documents again after closing the game.
If the ATS documents directory exists but its mod subfolder is still absent, create a folder named exactly mod there. Create it only inside the user ATS documents directory. A mod folder in the Steam installation directory will not substitute for it.
Confirm the file is in the folder ATS actually scans
- Quit ATS before changing files.
- Open the user Documents directory and then
American Truck Simulator. - Open or create the singular
modfolder. - Place the manual mod package directly in that folder.
- Start ATS and open Mod Manager to see whether the package is discovered.
If a file is still absent after this check, continue with the filter and package-format checks instead of moving it into other game directories.
Remove the Workshop-only Mod Manager filter
ATS Mod Manager has a control that can restrict the list to Steam Workshop mods. When that Workshop-only view is enabled, a valid package in your Documents folder can appear to be missing even though the game can read it.

- Open ATS and enter Mod Manager.
- Inspect the filtering or source controls near the mod list.
- Turn off the option that shows only Steam Workshop items.
- Return to the complete mod list and look for the manual package again.
The wording and placement of the control can vary with the game interface, so look for the meaning rather than one exact label: the setting must allow local or manually installed mods, not only Workshop content.
This check applies only to what the manager displays. It does not move files, convert a download into a Workshop item, or repair an incompatible package.
Check the package, extension, and folder depth
.scs files
Steam guidance for ATS mods says an .scs file should go directly into the ATS mod folder. Do not put it in another archive or add an extra directory level around it.
.zip and .rar downloads
A download advertised as an ATS mod may arrive as a general-purpose .zip or .rar archive. Extract it when the archive contains the actual mod package, then place the resulting package in the mod folder. SCS documentation describes Mod Manager packages as zip archives or normal directories, while Steam instructions specifically warn that generic .zip and .rar downloads may need extraction so the package itself is visible.
Inspect the extracted contents before launching the game. The item you place in mod should be the package or package directory, not a download wrapper containing another folder that contains the package. A common mistake is a path like mod/download-name/mod-file.scs when the expected placement is mod/mod-file.scs.
Directories and metadata
SCS’s Modding Wiki allows a package to be a normal directory as well as an archive and explains that packages can carry metadata. If the download supplies a directory intended to be the mod, place that directory directly in mod. Preserve the files and subfolders inside it; do not rename internal files unless the author instructs you to do so.
Keep the original extension visible in File Explorer. If Windows hides known extensions, enable extension display temporarily so you can distinguish name.scs from name.scs.zip. The latter is still a generic archive, not an .scs package.

Keep Workshop and manual mods on separate troubleshooting paths
Steam Workshop items
Workshop subscriptions are downloaded automatically and managed by Steam. They may not appear as ordinary files in the user Documents mod folder, so searching that folder is not a reliable way to verify a Workshop subscription.
For a Workshop item, verify that you are subscribed and that Steam has completed its download, then check the ATS Mod Manager with the Workshop source visible. Do not copy an internal Workshop file into the manual folder as a substitute; let Steam manage the subscription.
Manually downloaded items
Manual downloads follow the Documents path and package checks described above. Their absence from the Workshop-managed view is expected when a Workshop-only filter is active. Diagnose the source before changing files: moving a manual file into Steam’s installation directory does not turn it into a Workshop mod.
Read the game-version compatibility status
A mod can be present, correctly packaged, and visible while still being unusable. SCS Modding Wiki states that packages can declare the game versions they support. If the list contains no version matching your ATS version, the user cannot use that mod until its author updates it.

An ATS update can therefore change the diagnosis without changing the file. Before replacing a package that suddenly stopped working, check whether the game version changed and whether the author published a compatible build.
Check Windows permissions and administrator mode
Correct placement is not enough if Windows prevents ATS from reading the directory. An SCS support reply recommends checking NTFS permissions on the mod folder and whether the game is being run as administrator.
- Close ATS.
- In File Explorer, right-click the ATS
modfolder and open Properties. - Open the Security tab and review the permissions for the Windows account that launches the game. The account needs permission to read the folder and its contents.
- Apply any legitimate permission correction recommended by your Windows account or system administrator.
- Check whether ATS is configured to run as administrator. Use a consistent privilege level when testing the game and accessing the folder; a mismatch can make access behavior confusing.
- Launch ATS again and test with one known-good package.
Do not grant broad permissions or disable Windows security blindly. The useful diagnostic question is whether the account running ATS can read the exact Documents folder that contains the package.

A clean, one-mod-at-a-time recovery procedure
When several variables are wrong, use this controlled sequence. It avoids confusing a location fix with a version or dependency problem.
- Identify the source. Mark each item as Workshop or manual. Only manual items should be placed in the Documents
modfolder. - Close the game. Quit ATS before extracting, moving, or replacing files.
- Prepare the directory. Use
Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod. Run ATS once first if the ATS documents directory has never been created; create the singularmodfolder there if needed. - Prepare the package. Put an
.scsfile directly in the folder. Extract a generic.zipor.rarwhen necessary, and place the resulting package or intended mod directory directly inmod. - Open Mod Manager. Disable any filter that shows only Workshop items.
- Test discovery. Look for the package before enabling other new mods. If it is absent, recheck the path, extension, nesting, and permissions.
- Test compatibility. If the package is listed as incompatible, stop changing directories and find a release that declares support for the installed ATS version.
- Test behavior. Enable only the confirmed package, following its own dependency and load-order instructions. This isolates a broken download or conflict from the discovery problem.
- Record the failure state. If the package is visible but fails in-game, use the mod’s documentation and ATS logs to investigate dependencies, load order, removed Workshop content, or a damaged download.
Fixes for the most common specific mistakes
“I put the file in the Steam folder.”
Move the manual package out of the Steam installation directory and into the user Documents path. The installation directory contains the game binaries; it is not the ordinary scan location for manually downloaded ATS mods.
“I created a folder called mods.”
Rename or recreate it as mod, singular, under Documents/American Truck Simulator. A correctly named folder in the wrong parent directory is still wrong.
“The download is still a compressed file.”
Open the archive and determine whether it contains an .scs package or an intended mod directory. Extract generic .zip and .rar downloads when the package is inside, then avoid leaving it buried in a download-name folder.

Turn off the Workshop-only filter. The filter changes the displayed source, not the validity of the local package.
“The mod appears, but ATS says it is incompatible.”
This is a version-metadata issue rather than a missing-file issue. Check the author’s release notes for a build that supports your installed ATS version. SCS’s documented behavior is that a mismatch prevents use until the author updates the mod.
“The mod appears but does nothing.”
Discovery has succeeded. Check whether the mod requires dependencies, a particular load order, or a specific game version. A broken download, removed Workshop item, or conflict can also require the mod’s documentation and game logs; changing the folder again will not address those causes.

What changes on Linux or macOS?
The evidence and paths above are strongest for Windows and Steam. Linux and macOS use different user-data locations, so do not assume the Windows Documents path exists on those systems. Use the platform-specific ATS user directory documented for your installation, preserve the same principles—singular mod directory, correct package structure, source-appropriate handling, and version compatibility—and consult the mod’s instructions if the platform path is unclear.
The Workshop/manual distinction still matters on any platform: Workshop items are managed by Steam, while manually downloaded packages must be placed in the game’s user mod directory for that platform.
When the checklist does not solve it
If a manual package remains undiscovered after the path, filter, archive, and permission checks, confirm that the download completed and that the archive is not damaged. If a Workshop item vanished, check whether the item is still available and whether Steam completed its download. If a package is visible but fails during loading or in play, investigate dependencies and load order in the mod’s documentation and inspect ATS logs.
These cases are different from a missing folder. Keep the last known state—source, exact extension, Mod Manager status, and game version—when asking the author or SCS support for help. Those details let support determine whether the failure is discovery, compatibility, or runtime behavior.
