Use this guide to identify the requesting application first, then repair that application instead of downloading an unknown DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record these details:

Which program displays the error?
Does it appear when Windows starts, when opening a game, when loading a DAW project, or when launching an older utility? -
What is the exact message?

When did it begin?
Think about a recent uninstall, application update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, application move, or Windows change. -
Where is the file located, if it still exists?
A legitimate application DLL normally sits beside the application or inside its plug-in directory. An unexpected location requires additional checking. -
Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit?
A 32-bit application can need 32-bit files and runtimes even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Do not begin by copying amh.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
What amh.dll may belong to
The supplied description calls the file “amh Module,” but its developer and version fields are not sufficient to identify the owner. Public historical records connect the filename with more than one unrelated software context.
Older AOL installations
Historical AOL 9.0 and 9.0a file listings show AMH.dll inside an America Online program directory. Some listings associate that file with America Online, Inc.
If the error appears while starting an old AOL installation, inspect a path resembling:
C:Program FilesAmerica Online 9.0
Do not assume every amh.dll belongs to AOL. The directory and the executable that requests the file are more important than the name.
Ample Sound software
A historical Ample Guitar LP installation listing includes:
C:Program FilesAmple SoundAMH.dll
Ample Sound also publishes products and Windows installers using the AMH name. That does not prove that every current Ample Sound product uses the same historical DLL, so repair the exact installed product and version.
For an Ample Sound instrument, the error may occur in the standalone application, a DAW plug-in, or a plug-in scan. The correct repair is the matching official Windows installer from the Ample Sound user account or download page.
Fix 1: Identify the application that requests the file
This is the fastest and safest step.
If the error appears when opening a program
Close the message and note the application window, shortcut, or launcher behind it. Then:

- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the application folder shown in the target path.
If the target points to an AOL, Ample Sound, game, DAW, or other application directory, repair that program rather than Windows.
If the error appears during startup
Use Task Manager to identify programs that start with Windows:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Right-click suspicious or older entries and choose Open file location, when available.
- Record the parent folder and executable name.
You can also inspect startup entries with Settings > Apps > Startup.

If the error started after uninstalling a program, the application may have left behind a startup entry. Remove the obsolete startup entry only after confirming what it launches. If the software is still required, reinstall it instead.
Search for the file
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
amh.dll. - For each result, right-click the file and select Open file location.
- Record the complete path.
A file in an expected application folder is more plausible than one in a temporary folder, a random download directory, or a system directory. An unexpected copy should not be trusted solely because its name is correct.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution for an application DLL.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not exist or does not work, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Repair from Control Panel
For older desktop programs:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Reinstall from the official installer
If repair is unavailable:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the software publisher’s official account, download page, or original installation media.
- Install the matching Windows version.
- Launch the program from its normal shortcut.
For Ample Sound software, install the product-specific Windows package. Standalone, VST, VST3, and AAX components may be selectable separately. If you use a DAW, install the plug-in format that the DAW scans. Install the sample library separately when the product requires it.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the
amh.dllmessage. - The expected application folder contains the restored file.
- A DAW completes its plug-in scan.
- The game launcher no longer reports a missing component.
If the same error returns immediately, the problem may involve a dependency, wrong architecture, quarantine, or a damaged installer.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove a DLL after an update or scan.
Windows Security steps
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
amh.dllor the affected application. - Expand the entry and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if you have confirmed that it came from the legitimate application installation.

After restoring a trusted file, repair or reinstall the application so that all files come from the same verified build.
Fix 4: Install the runtime required by the application
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that amh.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found amh.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Older Ample Sound installation guidance specifically mentions Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable. This does not mean every copy of amh.dll requires it.
Install the correct Visual C++ architecture
- Confirm whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download the required Visual C++ package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable documentation or the Microsoft Download Center.
- For a 32-bit application, install the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.
- For a 64-bit application, install the x64 package.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not replace an application DLL with a different architecture. A 32-bit plug-in cannot use a 64-bit copy of the same-named private library.
If the vendor installer includes its own runtime repair option, use that option first. Do not download individual runtime DLLs from unofficial file repositories.

Fix 5: Check the file’s properties and signature
If a copy of amh.dll exists, inspect it before restoring or replacing it.
- Right-click
amh.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record the file description, original filename, publisher information, and version fields if present.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
A missing signature does not automatically prove that the file is malicious, especially for old software. It does mean that the file’s location, installer source, hash, and behavior deserve closer checking.

The file should normally be in the directory belonging to the application that needs it. A copy in a temporary folder, an unrelated application directory, or a system directory should be scanned and investigated before use.
Fix 6: Check for a dependency rather than a missing DLL
If reinstalling restores amh.dll but the same loader message remains, the named file may be present while another library is missing or incompatible.
Check these possibilities:
- The application is 32-bit but a 64-bit dependency is installed.
- A Visual C++ runtime is missing.
- The file is damaged.
- The application was moved without its supporting files.
- A plug-in was installed into a folder the DAW does not scan.
- The application loads an incompatible older or newer build.
- Security software blocked a dependent file.
Use the application vendor’s support procedure or a reputable dependency-analysis tool to inspect the exact executable and its imports. Avoid replacing dependencies one at a time from random websites.
Microsoft explains how Windows searches for DLLs in its documentation on dynamic-link library search order. Copying a file into a system directory can hide the real problem and create DLL hijacking risk.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not recreate a missing file, repair corruption, install a runtime, or fix an ordinary application-local library.
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 amh.dll
It may produce an entry-point error because the file is not a self-registering COM component. Microsoft describes the command’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Use registration only when the application’s official instructions explicitly require it and identify the correct file and architecture.
Fix 8: Repair broader Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM are designed primarily to repair protected Windows components. They usually cannot restore a private DLL belonging to AOL, Ample Sound, a game, or another desktop application.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
If these commands report that Windows repaired files but amh.dll still fails, return to the application’s installer. SFC and DISM are not substitutes for reinstalling the owning program.
Repeating these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Install updates from the application publisher or the official game launcher. For a DAW plug-in, rescan the plug-in directory after reinstalling:
- Open the DAW’s plug-in settings.
- Confirm the correct VST, VST3, or AAX folder is enabled.
- Start a full plug-in rescan.
- Remove stale duplicate entries if the DAW provides that option.
- Test the plug-in in a new project.
A display, audio, chipset, or storage driver is not a normal direct repair for amh.dll. Update drivers only if the application also reports device initialization failures, crashes after a driver change, or audio and graphics problems.

Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager. Expand the relevant category, right-click the device, choose Update driver, and select Search automatically for drivers. Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows does not find a suitable one.

Fix 10: Use System Restore for a recent system change
If the error began immediately after an installation, driver update, cleanup operation, or system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier restore point.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process on its System Restore support page.
Why downloading amh.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and standalone copies offered in search results. An arbitrary file may have:
- The wrong software build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing exports required by the application
- A damaged or altered binary
- Malware or a DLL-hijacking risk
Even a clean copy may not fix the dependency that caused “The specified module could not be found.” Restore the file through the owning application’s official installer, launcher repair feature, or trusted original media.

If the software is obsolete
AOL-era software and other legacy applications may no longer have a supported installer. If you do not need the program:
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove its obsolete startup entry.
- Restart Windows.
- Run a security scan.
If you still need it, locate the original installer, vendor account, or archived installation media. Verify the file’s path, signature, and provenance before restoring it. Do not use a random replacement simply because the filename matches.

Is amh.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence indicates that it is a third-party application DLL, not a standard Windows component.

Does amh.dll always belong to AOL?
