amrcore.dll is the Nokia AMR Codec, a third-party application DLL associated with Nokia AMR Speech Codec. If Windows says amrcore.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Nokia-era program that needs it rather than downloading a loose DLL.

What amrcore.dll is

Item Identification
File amrcore.dll
Description Nokia AMR Codec
Product Nokia AMR Speech Codec
Developer Nokia
Category Application component
Windows system file No reliable evidence indicates that it is
Reported architecture Public metadata describes it as a Win32 DLL, but this is not a current official Nokia specification

AMR is a speech-audio codec historically used with mobile communications and phone audio. The file was likely installed alongside older Nokia phone-management, multimedia, conversion, or AMR-audio software.

The exact parent application is not reliably documented in current official Nokia material. Do not assume that it came from a particular Nokia Suite, PC Suite, Ovi Suite, or multimedia release unless the installed program or its original installer confirms that.

Reported public file inventories associate the file with version 1.0.6.0 and a size of roughly 480 KB. Treat those as third-party metadata, not as proof that every legitimate copy has those attributes.

Why Windows reports the error

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because amrcore.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application failed to start because amrcore.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading amrcore.dll.”
  • “Failed to load amrcore.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The file amrcore.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Cannot register amrcore.dll.”

The named file is not always the true cause. In particular, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that amrcore.dll exists but another DLL required by it is missing or incompatible.

Common causes include:

  1. The Nokia application was incompletely installed or damaged.
  2. The application was removed while a startup entry or file association remained.
  3. Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  4. A required dependency is missing.
  5. A 32-bit and 64-bit component was mixed.
  6. The old application no longer works correctly with the current Windows installation.
  7. Windows itself has broader component corruption.

Use the fixes below in order.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting amrcore.dll

Before copying or replacing anything, find the application that displays the error.

Check the error window

If the error appears when you launch a program, note its name. Also check the title bar and the executable name in the message. That application is the first repair target.

If the error appears during startup without an obvious program:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Nokia, phone-management, multimedia, converter, audio, or unknown entries.
  4. Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location if available.
  5. Note the folder and executable name, but do not delete the file yet.

Check installed programs

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Search for Nokia, AMR, codec, phone, PC Suite, or related software.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Apps & features.
  5. Search the installed-program list.

Also check the older Control Panel list:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review Programs and Features for Nokia or multimedia software.

If you identify the parent program, continue with the repair steps. If the program is no longer needed and only an orphaned startup message remains, uninstalling it is usually safer than restoring the DLL.

Fix 2: Repair the Nokia application

Windows may offer a built-in repair action.

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the Nokia-related application.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if shown.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Launch the original application again.

The repair option may not be available for older programs. It may also reset application settings, so note any important configuration first.

You can also try Control Panel:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the Nokia-related application.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if available.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows and test the program.

A successful repair means the original program opens without the amrcore.dll message. If the same error appears, proceed to a complete reinstall.

Fix 3: Uninstall and reinstall the original application

Reinstall the complete parent application instead of replacing only the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the Nokia-related program.
  3. Select its three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Complete the application’s own removal wizard.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Remove any remaining startup entry only after confirming that it belongs to the uninstalled program.
  8. Reinstall the program from its original trusted installer or installation media.
  9. Run the installer with administrator rights if required. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  10. Restart Windows again.
  11. Launch the program and test the operation that previously failed.

On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, and choose Uninstall. Control Panel also provides Programs and Features.

Do not install a different Nokia utility merely because its name is similar. The exact parent application is not publicly established for every copy of amrcore.dll, and an unrelated Nokia installer may not contain the required codec.

If no original installer is available, the safest choices are to restore the application from its own installation media or remove the obsolete program and its startup remnants. Do not use a random DLL download as a substitute for the missing installer.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
  7. Expand any detection connected with the Nokia program or its installation folder.

Only restore the file if all of the following are true:

  • It came from a trusted original installation.
  • You recognize the parent application.
  • The detection has been verified as a false positive.
  • A current security scan does not identify the installation as malicious.

If the file was downloaded from an unknown source, do not restore it. Reinstall the parent application from trusted original media instead.

If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after reinstalling, stop launching the program and investigate the detection. A matching filename does not prove that a DLL is authentic.

Fix 5: Check the application folder and dependencies

An application DLL normally belongs beside the executable that loads it. It does not normally belong in C:WindowsSystem32 merely because Windows displays a missing-DLL message.

To inspect the expected location:

  1. Open the application’s shortcut menu.
  2. Choose Open file location.
  3. Right-click the application shortcut in the folder.
  4. Choose Properties.
  5. Check the Target field.
  6. Open the folder containing the executable.
  7. Look for amrcore.dll in that application directory.

Do not copy the file from another Windows computer. The copy may have a different architecture, dependencies, or provenance.

If amrcore.dll is present but Windows still reports that the specified module could not be found, the missing item may be a dependency. Reinstall the entire application package and review any application-specific log or installer error. Copying only the named DLL will not repair a missing dependency.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Available public metadata describes amrcore.dll as a Win32 DLL. That generally points to a 32-bit component, although the available metadata is not an official current Nokia build specification.

A 32-bit application requires compatible 32-bit libraries. A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL as if it were a 64-bit DLL, and the reverse is also true. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer, but that does not make their DLLs interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application architecture where the program documents it. If the program is an old 32-bit Nokia utility, install the matching original 32-bit application package rather than trying to force a 64-bit replacement.

Do not place a 32-bit application DLL in System32 or `SysWOW64 as a guess. Those folders are managed Windows locations, and placing an application component there can create new conflicts without fixing the original program.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when hardware is involved

A missing codec file is not automatically a driver problem. If the error appears while connecting a Nokia phone or using a device, check Device Manager for a separate hardware issue.

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Sound, video and game controllers, and Other devices.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Choose Properties.
  7. Read the message under Device status.
  8. Select the Driver tab.
  9. Use Update Driver only when Windows identifies the device or the original hardware software provides a compatible driver.
  10. If the device is corrupted, choose Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and reconnect it.

Do not expect Device Manager to recreate amrcore.dll. Drivers and application codec DLLs are separate components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting versions through Device Manager can be slow, especially with old phone hardware and several similarly named devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan showing which drivers are outdated; driver installation is handled by the full version, and reinstalling the Nokia application remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

Windows Features are not normally the source of this codec. You can still check whether an optional legacy component is disabled:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the listed Windows features.
  5. Enable only a feature required by the original application’s documentation.
  6. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable random legacy features as a response to the filename alone.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when other Windows files are also damaged or when the issue began alongside wider system problems. They are not a guaranteed source for restoring a third-party Nokia DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the Nokia application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run the commands again after DISM completes and review the result before continuing.

Repeating system scans without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported system problems; repair is performed by the full version, and the Nokia program still needs its own repair or reinstall when its application DLL is missing.

For a recent Windows 11 component problem, Microsoft also provides Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now on supported installations. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings, but it is a late-stage Windows repair and is not specific to amrcore.dll.

Fix 9: Remove obsolete Nokia software instead

If the program is no longer needed, removing it may be the correct fix.

This is especially likely when:

  • The error appears only during startup.
  • The Nokia application was already uninstalled.
  • No current device uses the software.
  • The original installer is unavailable.
  • The program is incompatible with the current Windows release.
  • The file is detected as suspicious and cannot be verified.

After uninstalling the confirmed parent program:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Check Task Manager > Startup apps.
  3. Check Task Scheduler for a task clearly belonging to the removed application.
  4. Check Installed apps and Programs and Features again.
  5. Remove only confirmed leftovers.
  6. Run a Windows Security scan.

Do not delete arbitrary registry entries or folders based only on the filename. If the message comes from an orphaned shortcut or scheduled task, identify that specific entry first.

What not to do

Do not download amrcore.dll from a random DLL website

A loose download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a modified file. It may also hide the real problem, such as a missing dependency or damaged Nokia installation.

There is no verified current official standalone Nokia download for amrcore.dll. Use the original application installer, original media, or a trusted recovery source instead.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

Application DLLs are commonly loaded from the application directory. System folders are not universal storage locations for third-party components. Copying the file there can cause version conflicts and does not repair the application’s installation.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A codec or runtime DLL may not be a self-registering COM component.

If you were specifically instructed by the original application documentation to register a compatible DLL, use the command that matches the DLL architecture. Otherwise, do not register amrcore.dll.

A failed command such as “DllRegisterServer was not found” indicates that registration is not applicable. It does not prove that the file is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install unrelated Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages

Those runtimes can matter when an error names one of their files or application diagnostics identify a runtime dependency. There is no specific evidence that installing them alone restores amrcore.dll.

FAQ

Is amrcore.dll part of Windows?

No reliable evidence indicates that it is a normal Windows component. It is identified as part of Nokia AMR Speech Codec and should be handled as an application file.

Which program installed amrcore.dll?

Public metadata identifies the Nokia codec but does not reliably identify one exact parent application. Look at the erroring executable, installed programs, startup entries, and application folders.

Should I download amrcore.dll separately?

No. A standalone download may be unsafe or mismatched and may not include the dependencies the application needs. Repair or reinstall the original Nokia application.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is amrcore.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

The strongest available public metadata describes it as Win32. Do not promise that a 64-bit build exists or mix a copy from another application.

Does the file belong in System32?

Normally no. It should generally be installed with the application that uses it.

Do I need to register amrcore.dll?

Normally no. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command, and a codec DLL may not support self-registration.

What if the file exists but Windows still says it cannot be found?

The message may refer to a missing dependency. Reinstall the complete parent application and check its logs rather than copying another version of the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I remove the Nokia program?

Remove it when it is obsolete, no longer needed, cannot be obtained from a trusted installer, or leaves only an orphaned startup error. If the program is still required, repair or reinstall it first.

What is the correct repair order?

Identify the parent application, repair it, reinstall it if necessary, inspect antivirus quarantine, check architecture and dependencies, and use DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
