An amulet is an object that people in a particular time and place believed—or understood through their traditions—to offer protection, healing, regeneration, or another benefit. Amulets have taken many forms: they might be worn, carried, attached to clothing, kept in a home, or placed with the dead. For video-game players, the word often signals a protective or beneficial item; its historical meanings, however, varied by culture and context rather than following one universal definition. The Science Museum Group’s account of amulets and UCL’s overview of Egyptian examples show why the object’s setting and history matter.

What is an amulet?

“Amulet” is a broad historical label, not a single design, material, or religious category. An object called an amulet might be natural or made, inscribed or plain, and associated with protection, healing, luck, religious practice, or other purposes. Its significance depends on who used it, where and when it was used, and what evidence survives about its context. In Egyptian studies, UCL notes that the term is generally reserved for bodily adornments with an unambiguous religious form or context; broader historical discussions may apply it more widely.

Annie Thwaite notes that the word derives from the Latin amulētum, used by Pliny the Elder for an item worn for therapeutic, protective, or exorcistic benefit. “Charm” is sometimes used similarly, but the terms are not exact synonyms in every culture or discipline; “talisman” is also used, though less often in the contexts Thwaite discusses. Her Science Museum Group Journal article emphasizes that labels and meanings can change over time.

People could attribute power to different features: the image represented, an inscription or recited spell, a material or colour, a ritual preparation, or the object’s closeness to the body. The Global Egyptian Museum’s entry on amulets describes the importance of spells, materials, colours, shapes, and imagery in Egyptian examples. The archaeological and literary evidence discussed in Gideon Bohak’s chapter on Greco-Roman amulets includes both inscribed and uninscribed objects.

What were amulets used for?

The attributed purpose depended on the object and its setting. Some amulets were worn or carried by living people; others were used in homes or deliberately placed in burials. A single object could also have more than one role. In ancient Egypt, for example, jewellery could carry amuletic significance as well as aesthetic, economic, and social value, as UCL’s Digital Egypt overview points out.

Amulets are documented in Egypt from the Predynastic period through the Roman Period, approximately 4400 BCE to the fourth century CE. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that early examples often took animal forms, while clear depictions of deities became more common later. Funerary amulets peaked in the Late Period (664–332 BCE), when some types were made specifically for the dead. These dates and interpretations come from the museum’s account of ancient Egyptian amulets.

What are some examples of ancient Egyptian amulets?

The Metropolitan Museum’s examples show how form, attributed purpose, and use in life or burial could differ. The meanings below are the museum’s interpretations of historical beliefs, not claims that the objects produced supernatural effects.

Object Attributed purpose Setting and context
Wedjat-eye Represented healing and regeneration; was thought to transfer regenerative power and provide general protection. Worn as an amulet; associated with the restored eye of Horus in Egyptian myth.
Heart scarab Connected with the posthumous weighing of the heart and the deceased’s judgment. Funerary use; the examples discussed by the museum are inscribed scarabs.
Headrest amulet Intended to provide the protective and reviving functions associated with a headrest. Placed beneath a mummy’s neck; the museum describes this as an exclusively funerary use.
Scarab or seal-amulet Its association with life and regeneration informed its amuletic significance. Could serve as both an amulet and a practical seal.

All four interpretations are from the Metropolitan Museum’s Egyptian amulets essay. A familiar symbol should not be assigned the same meaning everywhere: the museum notes that Egyptian-style objects circulated beyond Egypt, but whether people outside Egypt shared the Egyptian meaning and function is debatable.

Did amulets exist outside ancient Egypt?

Yes. The evidence for Greco-Roman amulets includes archaeological finds and literary references, as Bohak’s scholarly chapter describes. In later European collections, objects labelled amulets have been associated with healing, religion, luck, and protection. Thwaite discusses a hare’s foot catalogued by the Science Museum as protection against cramp, while cautioning that later labels may call objects “lucky” without recovering their earlier function. Her article focuses on European case studies, not a complete global history.

Thwaite reports that the Science Museum collection she discusses contains more than two thousand amulets. That is a figure for this particular collection as reported in her article, not a count of amulets worldwide or of all historical use. Science Museum Group Journal

Did ancient amulets really work?

Historical sources and objects can establish that people made, used, and valued amulets, and can document the benefits users attributed to them. They do not demonstrate that an amulet objectively prevents danger, cures illness, or guarantees good fortune. It is more accurate to say that a particular amulet was believed or intended to protect or heal than to state that it did so. A museum description or later collection label is evidence about an object’s recorded interpretation; it does not always establish what its original user thought.

That distinction also helps when reading games. A game may give an amulet a specific effect within its fictional rules, but the historical category does not prescribe one standard power or meaning. Treat the game’s description as its own world-building, not as a universal definition of real-world amulets.
