Yes, Amumu can cause true damage, but only conditionally. His Cursed Touch passive lets enemies he has cursed with a basic attack take bonus true damage when they receive incoming magic damage. The basic attack applies the curse; Riot’s wording does not say that the attack itself deals true damage, nor does it say that every Amumu ability deals true damage.
The precise answer
Amumu’s true-damage interaction comes from Cursed Touch, his passive. Riot Games describes it this way: “Amumu’s basic attacks Curse his enemies, causing them to take bonus true damage from incoming magic damage.” That sentence contains two separate events:

- Amumu uses a basic attack and applies a curse to the enemy.
- While the curse matters, incoming magic damage causes that enemy to take bonus true damage.
Those events should not be collapsed into one. The attack is the trigger that applies Cursed Touch. The bonus true damage is attached to magic damage subsequently received by the cursed enemy.

Step 1: A basic attack applies the curse
The official description specifically names Amumu’s basic attacks as the way he Curses enemies. This identifies the attack as an application method. It does not describe the attack as a true-damage attack.

In practical terms, an enemy can be marked by Amumu’s attack before the bonus effect described in the passive is relevant. The important question is not simply whether Amumu attacked, but whether the target that he cursed then receives the kind of damage named by the passive.
Step 2: The cursed target receives magic damage
Cursed Touch refers to “incoming magic damage.” When a cursed enemy receives that type of damage, the passive causes bonus true damage. The true-damage portion is therefore an additional effect associated with the magic-damage event, rather than a replacement label for Amumu’s original attack.
Riot’s current champion-page wording does not publish a numeric amount or a complete formula for this effect. It is therefore accurate to explain the condition, but not to attach a damage value that the cited overview does not provide.

The word “bonus” matters. Riot is not saying that all of the incoming magic damage is converted into true damage. The description says that the cursed enemy takes an additional true-damage component when incoming magic damage affects it.
Do Amumu’s basic attacks deal true damage?
Not according to the wording of the current official overview. His basic attacks apply the curse. The same sentence says that cursed enemies take bonus true damage from incoming magic damage, but it does not state that the basic attack’s own damage is true damage.

This distinction resolves the most common misunderstanding. Seeing a true-damage number after Amumu has attacked does not prove that the attack itself was true damage. The passive can be responsible for the extra true-damage result after the target receives qualifying magic damage.
A useful way to phrase the mechanic is: Amumu’s attack sets up Cursed Touch; incoming magic damage on the cursed target activates the passive’s bonus true damage. That wording preserves both parts of Riot’s description without assigning the passive’s damage to the wrong event.
Does every Amumu ability deal true damage?
No such conclusion is established by the champion-page description. Riot’s current Amumu page lists Cursed Touch, Bandage Toss, Despair, Tantrum and Curse of the Sad Mummy, but the explicit true-damage statement belongs to Cursed Touch.
The existence of a true-damage effect on the champion does not mean that every spell, crowd-control effect or basic attack automatically deals true damage. The overview identifies one passive interaction and does not label all of Amumu’s other abilities as true damage.
When checking an ability, keep its own damage description separate from Cursed Touch. If an ability causes magic damage to an enemy that Amumu has cursed, the passive’s condition may be relevant. That does not change the ability’s own damage type into true damage; it describes a separate bonus effect caused by the cursed state.

What “incoming magic damage” tells you
The phrase is narrower than “any damage.” Cursed Touch is described as responding to incoming magic damage. The official sentence does not say that every source of damage activates the bonus, and it does not provide a universal rule that all damage dealt around Amumu becomes true damage.
That wording also explains why the target’s state matters. The passive is not presented as a permanent aura that independently damages every nearby enemy. The enemy must first be cursed by Amumu’s basic attack, and the described bonus is then tied to magic damage received by that cursed enemy.
Because the overview does not publish every edge case, it is safer to use the exact condition rather than speculate about interactions that Riot’s page does not document. The reliable reading is limited to the relationship Riot states: cursed target plus incoming magic damage produces bonus true damage.
Common interpretations, checked against Riot’s wording
| Interpretation | What the official description supports |
|---|---|
| “Amumu’s basic attacks are true damage.” | The description says basic attacks apply Cursed Touch; it does not classify the attacks themselves as true damage. |
| “Cursed Touch adds bonus true damage.” | Yes. Riot explicitly describes bonus true damage on cursed enemies when they take incoming magic damage. |
| “Every Amumu ability deals true damage.” | Not established. The explicit true-damage wording belongs to the passive. |
| “Any damage to a cursed enemy activates the passive.” | Not established. The wording specifically names incoming magic damage. |
| “The passive converts magic damage into true damage.” | That is not what the sentence says. It describes bonus true damage, not a conversion of the original damage. |
A simple way to analyze an in-game situation
When you are trying to determine whether a particular hit involved Amumu’s true damage, use this sequence rather than judging by the appearance of a damage number:
- Identify the target. Was it the enemy Amumu hit with a basic attack, so that Cursed Touch could have been applied?
- Identify the later damage event. Did the cursed enemy then receive incoming magic damage?
- Separate the numbers conceptually. Treat the ability’s stated damage and the passive’s bonus true-damage effect as different parts of the result.
- Check the source you are relying on. If a guide gives a precise amount or formula, verify that it is current and authoritative; the current champion overview itself supplies no numeric value.
This process avoids two opposite errors: attributing all of Amumu’s damage to true damage, or overlooking the passive simply because the attack that applied it was not described as true damage.

What the current official page does—and does not—establish
The English-language Riot Games champion page was retrieved as current on October 13, 2026. It identifies Cursed Touch as Amumu’s passive and gives the quoted condition involving basic attacks, cursed enemies, incoming magic damage and bonus true damage.
That page does not give a named statistic, a numeric true-damage amount or a complete damage formula for the interaction. It also does not establish every possible edge case involving timing, repeated damage instances or unusual sources. Those omissions are important: a precise number should not be inferred from the qualitative wording alone.
For this question, the strongest supported conclusion is therefore mechanical rather than numerical. Amumu has a conditional source of true damage through Cursed Touch, but the overview does not justify a universal damage figure or a claim that all of his attacks and abilities are true damage.
Why older patch information can cause confusion
Riot’s patch 12.23 notes provide historical context for adjustments to Amumu’s W and E damage in 2022. Those notes document changes to those abilities at that time; they do not replace the current champion overview’s description of Cursed Touch, and they do not establish that W or E deal true damage.
Patch history is useful for explaining why an old guide may show different numbers or wording. It should not be used to turn an historical adjustment into a present-day claim about the damage type of every Amumu ability. For the direct question “Does Amumu do true damage?”, the current passive description is the relevant evidence.
The clearest wording to remember
If you need a one-sentence explanation for a teammate, use this: Amumu’s basic attacks curse enemies, and those cursed enemies take bonus true damage when they receive incoming magic damage.
That sentence answers “yes” while preserving the condition. It does not imply that the attack itself is true damage, that all of Amumu’s abilities are true damage, or that Riot has published a universal numeric amount on the current champion overview.
