AN-94 Black Ops 2 Class Setup: Attachments, Perks, and Pick 10 Choices

By VGSources Team 11 min read

For a versatile Call of Duty: Black Ops II multiplayer class, start with the AN-94, Quickdraw Handle, Fore Grip, Toughness, Semtex, a Concussion Grenade or Flashbang, and a pistol secondary. This two-attachment setup keeps the rifle steady at distance, gets you aiming sooner in close fights, and leaves Pick 10 room for defensive perks or equipment.

That is a practical starting point rather than a proven universal “best” class. The attachment and perk advice comes from a November 2012 AN-94 guide, while Black Ops II’s class rules come from Activision’s Create a Class documentation. Adjust the remaining picks to the map, enemy equipment, and the way you take gunfights.

Class slot Starting choice Why it fits the AN-94
Primary weapon AN-94 assault rifle The rifle rewards controlled opening shots and can cover close, medium, and longer engagements.
Primary attachments Quickdraw Handle and Fore Grip Quickdraw Handle supports faster sight acquisition; Fore Grip is intended to make recoil easier to manage at range.
Perk priority Toughness The guide’s clearest perk recommendation is reduced flinch while you are being shot.
Defensive perk options Flak Jacket and Tactical Mask Choose Flak Jacket when explosives are common and Tactical Mask when stuns and similar tactical effects are the bigger problem.
Lethal Semtex A direct, aggressive option for clearing a room, finishing a damaged opponent, or denying a route.
Tactical Concussion Grenade or Flashbang Both can create a safer opening for a push; pick the effect you use more reliably.
Secondary Pistol It gives you a way to finish an enemy when reloading the AN-94 would cost the engagement.

Do not read the table as a mandatory six-piece prescription. Toughness is the most consistently useful recommendation, while the defensive perk, grenade, and secondary should reflect the lobby. The two attachments are a balanced baseline because they address different ranges without requiring a third attachment.

What makes the AN-94 different in Black Ops II

The dated AN-94 guide describes its first two rounds as firing faster than the rounds that follow. Its central advice is to use those opening shots deliberately, especially in medium- and long-range fights, by repeatedly pulling the trigger instead of dumping an uncontrolled magazine. This is a description of the 2012 guide’s intended technique, not a newly measured rate-of-fire or time-to-kill test.

At longer distances, aim down sights and place the initial pair carefully. Beyond close range, the guide treats sighted fire as the dependable way to exploit the rifle’s opening-burst behavior. In a point-blank fight, it instead suggests hip fire while strafing so that you do not lose time trying to line up a perfect sight picture.

That pattern creates two practical responsibilities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Start a medium-range engagement with a controlled trigger press so the first two rounds do useful work.
  • Change your aiming method with distance: hip fire and movement up close, deliberate aiming farther out.
  • Use cover between bursts when possible rather than standing in the open and waiting for recoil to settle.
  • Keep a pistol ready when an opponent survives the opening exchange and the AN-94 needs a reload.

The AN-94 name also appears in later Call of Duty games with different mechanics. The recommendations here apply specifically to the Black Ops II version and should not be transferred to another title without checking that game’s behavior.

How Pick 10 changes the “best” build

Black Ops II custom classes allow up to 10 unlocked selections. Weapons, attachments, perks, equipment, and Wildcards all spend picks. Activision’s Create a Class explanation lists two primary-weapon attachment slots by default. The Primary Gunfighter Wildcard can add a third primary attachment, but the Wildcard itself consumes a pick and the extra attachment consumes another.

Perks follow a similar economy. You can select up to three perks, normally one from each perk class. A Greed Wildcard allows two perks from one class, and both the Wildcard and the additional perk count toward the 10-item limit. Every extra attachment therefore competes directly with a perk, grenade, secondary, or other class choice.

  • Strike Force Levels: New to the Call of Duty Franchise, strike force levels provide sandbox style game play experiences, allowing players to take command of any element of their squad at any time
  • Branching Story lines: Choices the player makes could mean the difference between life and death for some characters and there exists an even greater opportunity for multiple endings
  • Single Player Character Customization: Choose from a variety of weapons and load outs providing multiple choices for how you approach single player missions
Build direction What you spend What you gain When it makes sense
Two-attachment generalist Two primary attachment picks Room for more perks, equipment, or a Wildcard Most maps and mixed public lobbies
Three-attachment rifle Primary Gunfighter plus a third attachment Another weapon-specific benefit Only when that third benefit solves a problem you regularly face
Defensive class Picks shifted toward Toughness, Flak Jacket, Tactical Mask, or extra perk flexibility More resilience against gunfire flinch, explosives, or tactical effects Explosive or stun-heavy lobbies
Equipment-focused class Picks shifted toward lethal and tactical options More ways to force movement or start engagements Objective modes and players who actively use grenades

For a first class, keep Quickdraw Handle and Fore Grip, then spend the remaining picks on the threats you actually encounter. Add Primary Gunfighter only after you can name the third attachment’s job. A third attachment that provides no clear advantage is usually less valuable than the perk or equipment it displaces.

Attachment choices and their trade-offs

Quickdraw Handle

Quickdraw Handle is recommended for close combat because it helps you raise the sights faster. That matters when an opponent appears around a corner and both players are trying to aim before the other can land accurate shots. It does not turn the AN-94 into a submachine gun, so keep your movement and distance expectations realistic.

Use it when you often enter rooms, challenge head glitches at short distance, or lose fights because the rifle reaches the sight picture too late. If you mainly hold distant lanes and rarely fight inside buildings, Quickdraw Handle is still useful for emergencies, but it may be the first attachment you reconsider in a specialized long-range class.

Fore Grip

Fore Grip is the guide’s longer-range partner to Quickdraw Handle. It is intended to make recoil control easier, allowing you to keep the rifle on target while working through an engagement. The source does not provide a recoil percentage or a controlled comparison, so treat the benefit as practical handling advice rather than a quantified guarantee.

Fore Grip fits players who anchor a lane, watch a cross-map rotation, or prefer measured bursts. It does not replace good trigger discipline: begin with the faster opening pair, correct your aim, and use cover before the opponent can punish a missed sequence.

When to consider a third attachment

The available material does not establish a universally superior third attachment or a numerical ranking of attachment combinations. Use Primary Gunfighter only when a specific attachment changes a recurring problem in your matches. Ask three questions before spending the extra picks:

  • What engagement or failure does the third attachment address?
  • How often does that situation occur on the maps and modes you play?
  • Which perk, equipment item, or Wildcard will you give up to pay for it?

If you cannot answer those questions, the two-attachment setup is the safer allocation.

Perks: build around the lobby, not a fixed script

Toughness

Toughness is the strongest specific perk recommendation in the 2012 guide because it reduces flinch when you are hit. For the AN-94, that supports the weapon’s deliberate opening-shot approach: you have a better chance of keeping your sight picture on the target while returning fire. It is the default perk to keep unless a particular mode or challenge makes another choice more important.

Flak Jacket

Flak Jacket is a situational defensive choice for explosive-heavy matches. Equip it when grenades, explosive killstreaks, or objective defenses repeatedly force you out of useful positions. It does not improve the AN-94’s handling, so the trade is survival and position retention in exchange for a pick that could have gone to another perk or piece of equipment.

Tactical Mask

Tactical Mask is the corresponding answer to stun-related pressure. If Concussion Grenades, Flashbangs, or similar tactical effects routinely stop your pushes, this perk can preserve your ability to move and aim. If the opposing team is not using tactical equipment, that pick may be better spent elsewhere.

Using Greed Wildcards

Greed Wildcards let you take two perks from one perk class, but the Wildcard and the extra perk both consume picks. This can create a strong defensive package, yet it reduces room for attachments or equipment. Build the Greed version only when the second perk solves a problem you can identify; do not add it simply because the class has an unused slot.

Lethal, tactical, and secondary options

Semtex

The guide favors Semtex for an aggressive approach. Throw it to clear a room before entering, force an opponent away from cover, or finish a target who has already taken damage. Because it is a deliberate, targeted throw, it rewards knowing where the enemy is rather than tossing equipment at random.

Concussion Grenade or Flashbang

The guide suggests either a Concussion Grenade or a Flashbang. Choose based on the follow-up you perform consistently. A Concussion Grenade is useful when slowing an opponent helps you close the distance or hold a lane; a Flashbang is preferable when you can capitalize on a blinded target immediately. The source does not establish one as universally better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pistol secondary

A pistol gives the class an answer to the most common AN-94 failure state: an enemy survives the opening exchange and you need to reload. Switch rather than reloading in the open when the opponent is already within finishing distance. If your engagements are almost always long-range and you have safe time between fights, you may prefer to spend the secondary pick elsewhere, but the pistol is the practical default for an aggressive generalist.

How to play the class in real engagements

Opening a medium-range fight

  1. Move to cover with a clear view of the likely approach.
  2. Aim down sights before exposing your full body when you have warning.
  3. Use a controlled trigger press to take advantage of the faster first two rounds described by the guide.
  4. After the opening shots, correct your aim and continue only while the target remains exposed.
  5. Break line of sight if the first exchange does not go your way; do not stand still waiting for a perfect follow-up.

Fighting at close range

  1. Keep moving laterally instead of planting your feet.
  2. Use hip fire when the target is close enough that aiming would delay the first shot.
  3. Use Quickdraw Handle when you have a fraction of a second to aim but still need the rifle ready quickly.
  4. Switch to the pistol if the opponent survives and the AN-94 magazine is nearly empty.

Holding a longer lane

  1. Choose cover that protects you from at least one direction.
  2. Pre-aim the route rather than sprinting into an open sightline.
  3. Take the opening pair deliberately, then reassess before continuing to fire.
  4. Use Fore Grip’s intended recoil-control benefit together with your own burst discipline.
  5. Rotate when the enemy stops challenging the lane; the class is versatile enough to take a new angle.

Four practical variants

Close-range readiness variant

Keep Quickdraw Handle and the pistol, retain Toughness, and use your remaining choices for a perk or equipment item that supports fast pushes. This version is for players who enter buildings and objectives frequently. Fore Grip remains useful, but if you are forced to choose between the two attachments for a highly specialized close-quarters map, Quickdraw Handle addresses the more immediate problem.

Longer-range steadiness variant

Keep Fore Grip, Toughness, and the deliberate opening-shot technique. Use the second attachment according to how often opponents rush your position. This is a better fit for open maps, lane-holding roles, and players who already aim before exposing themselves.

Explosive-lobby variant

Keep the two-attachment baseline, then prioritize Flak Jacket if explosives are the main source of deaths. Add Tactical Mask instead when stuns and flashes prevent you from taking fights. Do not buy both automatically: the Pick 10 limit means each defensive addition has an opportunity cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Attachment-heavy variant

Use Primary Gunfighter and a third attachment only when you have a specific reason to accept fewer perk or equipment options. This is a preference build, not a demonstrated best-in-slot configuration. The reviewed sources do not provide controlled performance data that would justify ranking it above the two-attachment class.

  3. Add Quickdraw Handle and Fore Grip as the two default primary attachment choices.
  4. Select Toughness as the first perk priority.
  5. Choose Flak Jacket or Tactical Mask only after identifying whether explosives or tactical effects are the larger threat.
  6. Add Semtex as the lethal and either a Concussion Grenade or Flashbang as the tactical.
  7. Equip a pistol secondary if you commonly need to finish an engagement during an AN-94 reload.
  8. Count every weapon, attachment, perk, equipment item, and Wildcard. Stay at or below 10 picks.
  9. If you want a third primary attachment, add Primary Gunfighter, add the attachment, and then recount the class because both selections consume picks.
  10. Play several matches, note the situation that causes the most deaths, and change one pick at a time.

Common mistakes and fixes

Trying to use the rifle like a close-range automatic weapon

Holding the trigger while sprinting into every room ignores the AN-94’s described opening-shot advantage. Use movement and hip fire up close, but choose fights where Quickdraw Handle can help you aim quickly and retreat when the distance is unfavorable.

Adding attachments until the class has no flexibility

Three attachments can look attractive, but Primary Gunfighter and the third attachment consume picks that could have paid for Toughness, Flak Jacket, Tactical Mask, grenades, or a secondary. Keep two attachments unless the third has a defined purpose.

Taking defensive perks without checking the lobby

Flak Jacket and Tactical Mask are recommendations for specific threats, not compulsory parts of every class. Watch how the opposing team plays and use the available pick on the problem you actually face.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reloading instead of switching

When an opponent is already damaged and close, a pistol can finish the fight faster than waiting for the AN-94 reload. If you have solid cover and time, reload safely; if you are exposed, switch or disengage.

Expecting a current meta verdict

A current CODMunity page labels the AN-94 with a 0.0% pick rate and “Not ranked,” but those site-reported indicators do not establish an active, representative Black Ops II player meta. The game and the attachment advice are from an older title, so treat this class as a reliable starting framework rather than a claim about what every player uses today.

What is and is not established about this setup

The documented evidence supports the AN-94’s described faster first two rounds, the suggested trigger technique, the Quickdraw Handle and Fore Grip roles, the Toughness recommendation, the situational defensive perks, and the Semtex, tactical grenade, and pistol options. It does not provide controlled measurements for damage, recoil percentage, time to kill, win rate, or the precise advantage of one complete class over another.

That distinction matters when you tune the class. Use your own match results to decide whether you need faster sight acquisition, steadier recoil control, explosive protection, tactical protection, or more equipment. Make one change at a time so you know which pick solved the problem.
