An Instrument to Unfold Space and Time is a main quest in The Outer Worlds 2 that takes you to Praetor to acquire the Rift Anomaly Modulator. The device lets you interact safely with rift anomalies, which can open routes and reveal otherwise inaccessible loot. Some players have reported getting stuck after acquiring it; those reports describe symptoms, not a confirmed cause or universal bug.

What the quest is about

Guides identify An Instrument to Unfold Space and Time as a main quest on Praetor. Its objective is to acquire the Rift Anomaly Modulator, which GameSpot also calls the Prototype Rift Device. GameSpot’s rift guide gives the quest and item context.

The quest matters because the modulator enables safe interaction with rift anomalies. Those anomalies can provide access to routes and areas that are otherwise out of reach, including places with loot. All Things How’s rift overview describes the device’s role; Game8’s interactive map also connects the Praetor quest with exploration and rare items.

What the Rift Anomaly Modulator does

Use the modulator to interact with rift anomalies as you explore. The guides describe its broad purpose, but do not establish a complete step-by-step quest route, branching outcomes, or a guaranteed sequence for every player. Treat rifts as exploration opportunities: they may open a path or provide access to otherwise inaccessible loot.

If the quest gets stuck after acquiring the modulator

A player opened a thread on the Obsidian community technical-support forum on November 4, 2025, describing an issue after obtaining the modulator and opening the first rift. The player reached an upper area, but Security Chief Vaillancourt did not respond over the intercom and the elevator could not be used. Other players later described similar problems on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.

These are player reports, not confirmation that the issue affects everyone, that it still occurs, or that a specific action causes it. Some commenters suspected that exploring upper areas or disabling security before acquiring the modulator might be involved, but the thread does not prove that connection. One player reported that killing their character did not resolve the elevator problem.

What to check

  • Note whether Vaillancourt responds over the intercom and whether the elevator can be activated.
  • Recall whether you explored upper areas or disabled security before taking the modulator. These are reported circumstances, not established triggers.
  • If you have a save from before acquiring the modulator, keep it available before experimenting with alternate routes or other sequence changes.
  • Check current game patch information for your platform. Player comments about patches in the forum thread are not authoritative patch notes or confirmation of a fix.

The forum thread includes an individual workaround using a trainer. It is not an endorsed fix, and the report does not establish that it is safe or applicable across platforms.
