Anbernic’s RG DS Is $50 Cheaper Than the Original Nintendo DS—But It Isn’t a True Replacement

The RG DS is $50 cheaper than the original Nintendo DS’s launch MSRP, but it is an Android/Linux emulation handheld—not a native Nintendo replacement.

Yes—at Anbernic’s listed $99.99 sale price, the RG DS is $50 cheaper than the original Nintendo DS’s $149.99 North American launch MSRP. But that is a comparison between new hardware and a 2004 price. The RG DS is an Android/Linux emulation handheld, not a Nintendo console, and its value depends on whether you want authentic DS hardware or a modern device that can emulate several systems.

The price comparison is accurate, with an important qualification

Anbernic lists the RG DS at $99.99 on its official product page, a price observed on August 16, 2026. The original Nintendo DS launched in North America on November 21, 2004, with an MSRP of $149.99. That makes the RG DS $50 cheaper in nominal terms—about 33% below the original launch price.

That does not prove the RG DS is cheaper than every Nintendo DS available today. Most original DS-family consoles are now bought second-hand, and current used-market prices were not verified here. Shipping, taxes, storage options and accessories can also change the final RG DS cost. Check the official listing before buying, since $99.99 is presented as a sale price.

System Price basis Price
Anbernic RG DS Official sale price observed August 16, 2026 $99.99
Original Nintendo DS North American launch MSRP, November 21, 2004 $149.99
Difference Nominal comparison $50

What the RG DS actually is

The RG DS copies the Nintendo DS’s broadest idea: a portable clamshell with two screens and touch input. It is not Nintendo-licensed hardware and does not natively run Nintendo DS cartridges. Instead, it uses Android 14 and Linux 64-bit, with emulators providing access to older platforms.

Anbernic’s listed hardware includes two 4-inch IPS displays at 640×480, capacitive multi-touch with stylus support, a Rockchip RK3568 quad-core processor running at up to 2.0GHz, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, HDMI output, wireless projection, vibration, a gyroscope and a 3.5mm headphone port.

Anbernic advertises Android gaming and emulation for more than 20 platforms. That is a manufacturer compatibility claim, not a guarantee that every game on every system will perform equally well. The RG DS is best understood as a general retro handheld with a DS-shaped design—not as a modern Nintendo DS.

RG DS versus the original Nintendo DS

Feature Anbernic RG DS Original Nintendo DS
Software Android/Linux and emulators Nintendo’s native operating system and games
Displays Two 4-inch 640×480 IPS screens Two native Nintendo DS screens
Input Capacitive touch and stylus support Resistive touchscreen and stylus
Game support Emulated software; no DS cartridge slot Nintendo DS cartridges and native software
Extra hardware Android apps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI output Microphone, wireless communication and Game Boy Advance compatibility
Battery claim Approximately six hours, according to Anbernic Approximately six to 10 hours, depending on use, according to Nintendo

The two-screen layout can look convincing, but the experience is not automatically identical. DS games may depend on accurate touch positioning, microphone input, screen timing, closing the system to trigger sleep, local wireless functions or unusual accessories. Emulation can reproduce much of the format while still requiring per-game adjustments or producing occasional glitches.

How well does it replace a DS?

The RG DS uses the RK3568 platform and an emulator-based software stack. Early coverage and user reports described issues including screen synchronization, uneven performance and immature software. Anbernic has since published software updates, so launch-era reviews should not be treated as a complete description of the current product.

That said, an update does not turn emulation into native hardware. Potential problems include incorrect screen scaling, touch-mapping errors, audio or timing glitches, different behavior between emulators, save-state quirks and unreliable support for microphones or special peripherals. Performance can also differ between Android and Linux.

The device should not be treated as a dependable 3DS replacement. Some DSi software may also require capabilities beyond ordinary DS emulation. If your priority is native 3DS software, original 2DS or 3DS hardware is the more appropriate category of product; anecdotal recommendations should still be checked against current local availability and pricing.

Firmware matters more than the shell suggests

The RG DS has three broad software paths:

Stock Android

Android is the flexible option for users who want Android applications, multiple emulator choices and customization. Anbernic reported an Android V1.18 update that added Google Mobile Services, improved launcher image recognition and enabled cross-system game-data loading. Android can also involve more menus, emulator configuration and variable battery behavior.

Official Linux

Linux is the more console-like route for buyers who want a dedicated launcher and less Android overhead. Anbernic lists an official RGDS Linux V1.0 build dated May 13, 2026. Download firmware only from the official firmware page, confirm that the file matches the exact RG DS model and back up the original microSD contents before flashing.

Third-party firmware

Community firmware may offer different front ends or emulator configurations, but it can also remove features, create recovery problems or vary in battery life and compatibility. Without current hands-on testing, there is no basis for calling one unofficial system the best choice.

Battery, storage and bundled software caveats

Anbernic lists a 4,000mAh battery and approximately six hours of battery life. Treat six hours as a manufacturer estimate rather than a universal result: brightness, wireless settings, emulator choice, game complexity and firmware can all change runtime.

The product page lists 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, but buyers should verify whether the stated storage is internal storage, an included microSD card or part of a particular bundle. Optional higher-capacity packages may have different prices. Do not treat claims about thousands of included games as a measure of legitimate software value unless the exact contents and licensing are clear. Emulation hardware is legal as a device, but obtaining or distributing copyrighted game ROMs can raise separate copyright issues.

Who should buy the RG DS?

Choose the RG DS if you want:

  • A new dual-screen handheld rather than aging second-hand hardware.
  • Modern IPS displays and Android applications.
  • One device for DS-style gaming and other retro systems.
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI output and software flexibility.
  • A solution that does not depend on owning cartridges.
  • Some tolerance for emulator setup and troubleshooting.

Choose original DS hardware if you want:

  • Native Nintendo DS games and cartridge support.
  • The original touch, microphone, speakers and wireless behavior.
  • The simplest plug-in-and-play experience.
  • Reliable support for DS accessories and unusual game mechanics.
  • A clean, tested used unit that costs substantially less locally.

A DSi or DSi XL may make more sense for buyers who want a later DS-family design or larger screens. A 2DS or 3DS is the better category for anyone specifically seeking native 3DS games. Prices for those used alternatives vary by region and condition, so they should be checked separately rather than inferred from the RG DS’s launch comparison.

The real value calculation

  1. Compare the right prices: $99.99 today versus $149.99 in 2004 is not the same as $99.99 versus a current used DS listing.
  2. Decide whether you need cartridges: The RG DS cannot replace a Nintendo cartridge slot.
  3. Identify the systems you want to play: DS emulation is the central use case; DSi and especially 3DS are less secure assumptions.
  4. Price the complete setup: Include shipping, tax, storage, accessories and any replacement items.
  5. Account for your tolerance for configuration: Native Nintendo hardware is simpler, while Android/Linux offers more flexibility at the cost of setup.
  6. Check condition on the used market: Original consoles may have worn batteries, hinges, buttons or screens, while the RG DS carries its own firmware and support risks.

Verdict

The headline is technically correct when stated precisely: Anbernic’s RG DS is currently listed at $99.99, which is $50 below the original Nintendo DS’s $149.99 North American launch MSRP. But “cheaper than the original” does not make it a universal bargain.

The RG DS is compelling as a new, flexible, multi-system emulation handheld with a dual-screen design. It is a poor substitute for Nintendo hardware if you own cartridges, need native compatibility, rely on microphone or accessory features, or want dependable 3DS support. The best purchase depends on the local price and condition of used Nintendo systems, the software you already own and how much setup you are willing to accept.
