Patrice Désilets co-founded Panache Digital Games and serves as its creative director. Take-Two’s May 23, 2019 publisher release describes him as “the original creative director of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.” That background explains the attention around the Switch 2 announcement, but Ancestors is not an Assassin’s Creed game or a historical action title. It is a deliberately different survival and evolution experiment.

What you actually do in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey
Panache describes the game as a third-person, open-world survival experience set in Neogene Africa. The timeline begins 10 million years ago and covers the long evolutionary span toward two million years ago. Its organizing principle is Explore, Expand, Evolve.

Explore an unfamiliar Africa
You investigate forests, rivers and other parts of the prehistoric environment while learning which plants, materials and locations can help your clan. Expeditions also expose members to predators and changing weather, so movement through the world is a survival decision rather than simple sightseeing.
Expand the clan and its territory
Survival depends on more than one controllable character. You form bonds and families, recruit new clan members and switch between different members of the group. Eating, drinking and sleeping are regular needs, while social relationships and reproduction determine whether the clan can continue.

Evolve across generations
Discoveries and abilities can be passed to later generations. The choices made by one group influence which attributes and knowledge survive into the next, meaning two players can guide their clans along different paths. Progress is therefore measured not only by immediate survival, but by what the clan manages to preserve.
How predators and risk shape play
Predators are a constant practical threat. The announcement specifically highlights intimidating predators during expeditions, alongside avoiding them and dealing with weather. A successful outing requires deciding who should travel, what the group knows, and when returning to safety is wiser than pushing farther. Because knowledge and abilities are inherited selectively, a risky discovery can benefit future generations even when the immediate expedition is costly.

Who should watch this release?
The Switch 2 version is aimed at players who want a systems-driven survival game in which experimentation, family management and long-term progression matter as much as moment-to-moment action. Its unusual setting and generational structure may appeal to players interested in emergent stories rather than a fixed campaign. Anyone expecting an Assassin’s Creed-style stealth adventure should instead view Désilets’ connection as creative history, not a promise of similar gameplay.
