Angelfall vs Diablo IV: How Their Dark-Fantasy Combat and Gameplay Differ

Angelfall and Diablo IV share an isometric, dark-fantasy action vocabulary, but they are built around different games loops. Angelfall is an upcoming roguelike reverse-horror game in which you play an Archdemon, kill humans and angelic enemies, collect Souls and reshape a build during repeated runs. Diablo IV is a released action RPG about a customizable hero in Sanctuary, with class skill trees, persistent gear, an open world, quests, dungeons, seasonal and Eternal realms, and a long endgame.

That distinction answers the practical question. Choose Angelfall if you want experimental, run-based build crafting and the novelty of being the monster. Choose Diablo IV if you want a currently available campaign-to-endgame RPG with established multiplayer and cross-platform progression. Angelfall advertises substantial systems and co-op, but its Steam game and demo pages still say “Coming soon,” so you cannot treat it as an immediately playable alternative.

What Angelfall actually plays like

You are the threat, not the savior

The defining idea in The3rd.One Games’ Steam description is role reversal: “Angelfall is a roguelike reverse-horror game, in which you play as powerful Archdemon, slaughter hordes of humans, harvest their souls, and discover devastating synergies.” Instead of protecting a frightened population from supernatural forces, the player embodies the force that ordinary people fear. Angelic enemies are also part of the opposition, so the fantasy is conquest and predation rather than heroic defense.

  • Diablo IV is the next-gen action RPG experience with endless evil to slaughter, countless abilities to master, nightmarish Dungeons, and legendary loot.
  • Embark on the campaign solo or with friends, meeting memorable characters through beautifully dark settings and a gripping story, or explore an expansive end game and shared world where players can meet in towns to trade, team up to battle World Bosses, or descend into PVP zones to test their skills against other players - no lobbies necessary - with cross-play and cross-progression on all available platforms.

That premise changes the emotional framing of familiar dark-fantasy imagery. Villages, human armies and celestial enemies are obstacles to consume or destroy. The game’s tags identify dark fantasy, bullet hell, top-down combat, class-based combat and single-player, suggesting a viewpoint and control scheme closer to a top-down action roguelite than to a traditional third-person horror game.

The run loop: kill, collect, reroll and combine

Angelfall’s core loop is organized around individual runs. You enter a run, eliminate enemies, gather Souls and other run resources, select abilities and attempt to assemble combinations that can survive increasingly difficult encounters. The listing specifically describes choosing or rerolling abilities, then combining skills, runes, passives and specializations. A strong run therefore depends not just on the power of one ability, but on how several temporary or run-shaped choices interact.

  1. Enter a run and clear encounters. Top-down hack-and-slash combat places groups of enemies, projectile patterns and movement decisions on the same screen.
  2. Collect Souls and run resources. Souls are both the game’s signature fantasy resource and part of the stated progression loop.
  3. Choose or reroll abilities. Rerolls let you react when the offered skill does not fit the direction of the current build.
  4. Link skills, runes, passives and specializations. The goal is a synergy rather than an isolated upgrade.
  5. Face challenges, random events and bosses. Runs are punctuated by less predictable encounters and secrets instead of a fixed campaign route.
  6. Use run systems to reshape the next attempt. The Corruption passive tree and Hellforge are described as tools for changing builds between or during runs.

The precise values of Souls, reroll costs, ability pools, run length and difficulty scaling have not been established by the cited pages. Those details matter to the final balance, so it would be misleading to infer them from the game’s genre labels alone.

Corruption and Hellforge are the build-shaping hooks

Angelfall advertises two named systems beyond ordinary ability selection. The Corruption passive tree is presented as a way to reshape the build, while the Hellforge is described as another method of modifying power between or during runs. Together with rerolls, runes and specializations, these systems imply several decision layers: an immediate choice for the current encounter, a broader direction for the run and longer-term choices that influence future attempts.

That is a different kind of build variety from a large loot table. In a roguelite, variety comes from the combinations the game offers in a particular attempt and from the player’s ability to salvage an imperfect set of choices. A build can be powerful because its components multiply one another, not simply because every item has a higher number. Until the game is released, however, the depth of the Corruption tree, the permanence of Hellforge upgrades and the size of the skill pool remain unconfirmed.

Enemies, bosses and changing routes

The Steam listing promises challenging enemies, bosses, random events and secrets. Dynamic music is also advertised, indicating that the run is intended to react to what is happening rather than present one unchanging soundtrack. These features support replayability: a player can learn enemy patterns while still encountering different events, routes or upgrade offers.

Angelfall is not described as a persistent open world. Its known structure is run-focused, with maps and encounters designed for repeated attempts. That makes failure part of the format. Losing a run is not merely a reload of a campaign checkpoint; it is an opportunity to use what you learned and assemble a different combination next time.

Co-op is advertised, but not yet testable

The Steam page lists single-player, online co-op and LAN co-op. This is notable because it gives Angelfall a way to turn its build-synergy systems into a group experience. In principle, players could coordinate complementary abilities or divide attention during projectile-heavy encounters. The listing does not establish player counts, matchmaking, cross-play, progression sharing, host requirements or whether every mode supports every co-op option.

More importantly, the co-op claim is a feature description for an unreleased game. The game and demo are both marked “Coming soon,” and no confirmed release date or current purchase option is established by the available official pages. Treat co-op as an advertised feature rather than a service you can use today.

What Diablo IV actually plays like

A persistent hero in corrupted Sanctuary

Blizzard describes Diablo IV as a dark-fantasy action RPG set in corrupted Sanctuary. Its story follows a world damaged by earlier catastrophes and threatened by the return of Lilith. The player creates a hero and travels through a broad setting filled with quests, vicious enemies and loot, rather than controlling the setting’s principal demon.

The tone is still bleak and violent, but the player’s position is different. Diablo IV asks you to survive and investigate a hostile world; Angelfall asks you to dominate one. That difference affects the meaning of combat, the kinds of objectives you receive and the way each game presents its enemies.

Class identity drives combat

Diablo IV’s launch material identifies five classes: Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue and Sorcerer. Each class has its own abilities and play patterns, and character development is organized through a class skill tree, equipment and loot. A Barbarian’s combat identity is not simply a temporary run choice; it is the foundation of a persistent character that you continue to develop through the campaign and later activities.

Blizzard’s feature descriptions also emphasize dungeons with variable layouts, Strongholds, local events and world bosses. Combat therefore ranges from routine packs encountered while traveling to structured dungeon runs and large encounters intended for more coordination. PvE and PvP activities sit alongside the campaign, giving the same character reasons to keep improving after the main story.

Open-world activities connect the campaign to endgame

Unlike Angelfall’s run-focused maps, Diablo IV presents an expansive shared world. Quests lead through regions of Sanctuary, while dungeons provide repeatable combat spaces with variable layouts. Strongholds create larger objectives in the world, local events interrupt travel with optional fights and world bosses offer public encounters. The result is a persistent geography in which activities are layered rather than reset as one self-contained attempt.

Diablo IV also separates seasonal and Eternal realms. Eternal progression is the continuing home for a character, while seasonal play provides a separate framework for new content and a fresh progression cycle. The exact seasonal rules can change, but the important contrast with Angelfall is structural: Diablo IV retains a long-lived hero and account journey rather than making every run the primary unit of progress.

Multiplayer, platforms and progression

Diablo IV is documented for Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with cross-play and cross-progression. Cooperative play is part of the world’s design, and PvP areas add a competitive option in addition to ordinary PvE. Those platform and social systems are available characteristics of a released product, not a future listing.

Cross-progression does not mean that every edition, purchase entitlement or platform arrangement is identical. Before buying, verify the marketplace, platform and edition you need. The relevant comparison is that Diablo IV already has an operating ecosystem for shared play, while Angelfall’s advertised online and LAN options cannot yet be verified in practice.

How their combat differs

Run improvisation versus class mastery

Angelfall’s combat asks, “What can this run become?” Ability offers, rerolls, runes, passives and specializations can push a character in a direction that was not planned at the start. The pleasure is improvisational: recognize a powerful interaction, protect it through the next encounter and adapt when the game offers something unexpected.

Diablo IV asks, “How do I develop this class and character?” Its skill tree and equipment let you refine a planned archetype over time. You can change a build, but the character’s class remains the organizing principle. Loot upgrades, skill choices and endgame activities reward continued investment in one persistent identity.

Projectile pressure versus activity variety

Angelfall is explicitly tagged with bullet-hell elements. That points to combat in which movement, positioning and reading projectile patterns share importance with selecting attacks. Bosses and challenging enemies are expected to test the build while also testing the player’s ability to navigate danger in real time.

Diablo IV’s official descriptions cover a wider activity range: dungeon layouts, Strongholds, local events, world bosses, cooperative PvE and PvP. Its combat challenge is distributed across those formats rather than defined by one bullet-hell identity. The available descriptions do not support a claim that one game has objectively faster, smoother or more responsive controls; that would require hands-on testing under controlled conditions.

Different meanings of power

In Angelfall, power is a run’s temporary engine. Souls and offered upgrades help you reach a synergy before the run ends, and a failed attempt sends you back into another set of choices. In Diablo IV, power is an ongoing project involving class skills, gear, loot and endgame progression. A new item or skill adjustment can matter because it remains part of the character’s continuing development.

Which game has more build variety?

There is no single measure of “more.” Angelfall appears to emphasize combinatorial variety inside a run: rerolls, runes, passives, specializations, Corruption and Hellforge can make two attempts with the same Archdemon feel different. The game’s advertised synergies are the point, and a player who enjoys discovering interactions may find that format more expressive.

Diablo IV offers variety across classes, skills, gear and activities, with a persistent character that can be tuned over a longer span. Five launch classes provide distinct starting identities, while loot and skill choices support multiple builds within each class. Seasonal and Eternal realms add separate progression contexts. That is broader long-term character variety, but it is not the same as Angelfall’s run-to-run experimentation.

Because Angelfall has not released, the actual number of abilities, passive nodes, runes, specializations and viable combinations is unknown. Diablo IV’s systems are available to play, but its current balance and seasonal options can change over time. Compare the type of variety you want, not an unsupported numerical total.

World structure and replayability

If you prefer… The closer fit is… Why
Shorter, self-contained attempts with changing offers Angelfall Its announced design centers on runs, random events, secrets, rerolls and bosses.
A campaign world you revisit with the same hero Diablo IV Sanctuary connects quests, dungeons, Strongholds, events and endgame activities.
Learning one class over many sessions Diablo IV Class skills, gear and persistent realms support long-term specialization.
Turning an unexpected upgrade into a new strategy Angelfall Its advertised synergies and run-specific choices make adaptation central.

Angelfall’s replayability should come from procedural or semi-random variation and the search for better combinations. Diablo IV’s replayability comes from repeating activities with a persistent build, finding loot, developing characters and participating in seasonal or endgame systems. They can both occupy the “dark-fantasy action” shelf without serving the same session-to-session purpose.

Should you buy Diablo IV or wait for Angelfall?

Choose Diablo IV now if you need a playable game

  • You want to start immediately rather than wait for an announced release.
  • You prefer a campaign and open world over run-reset progression.
  • You want established PC-and-console support, cross-play and cross-progression.
  • You plan to spend time on dungeons, Strongholds, world events, world bosses, PvE or PvP.
  • You enjoy choosing a class and refining a persistent hero through skills and loot.

Put Angelfall on a watchlist if its premise is the priority

  • You want to play the Archdemon instead of a conventional defender of humanity.
  • You enjoy roguelike runs, rerolls and discovering powerful interactions under changing conditions.
  • You are interested in bullet-hell pressure and top-down hack-and-slash combat.
  • You want advertised online or LAN co-op in a run-focused format.
  • You are willing to wait because the Steam game and demo are still marked “Coming soon.”

What to verify before making either decision

  1. For Diablo IV, check the current store page for your platform, edition contents and any account or platform requirements.
  2. For Angelfall, check the official Steam listing for a release-date change, demo availability and confirmed co-op details.
  3. Do not treat Angelfall’s feature list as proof of present availability; no confirmed release date is established by the cited pages.
  4. Do not use review scores, frame-rate claims or completion-time comparisons as deciding factors here; no dependable comparative statistics are established.

Bottom line: similar atmosphere, opposite progression philosophy

Angelfall and Diablo IV overlap in viewpoint, violence and dark-fantasy presentation, but their identities diverge quickly. Angelfall is a reverse-horror roguelite about becoming an Archdemon, harvesting Souls and turning a temporary set of abilities into a devastating synergy. Diablo IV is a persistent action RPG about a customizable hero, class mastery, loot and activities spread across Sanctuary.

For a released, socially connected game with a campaign and established endgame, Diablo IV is the practical choice today. For a future game whose appeal is run-based experimentation and the unusual fantasy of hunting humans and angels, Angelfall is the one to watch. The latter’s final combat feel, balance, release timing and co-op implementation remain unknown until the game is available.
