- The error appears when opening a GIF-X effect or filter: reinstall the complete Ulead GIF-X package.
- The file exists but the host still says it cannot load it: check whether the image editor is 32-bit and whether the plug-in is in the correct folder.
- The file disappeared after a security scan: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- Only PaintShop Pro fails: repair or reinstall the compatible PaintShop Pro installation, then reinstall GIF-X.
- Several Windows components are also failing: use DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate Ulead files.
- You no longer use the filter: remove GIF-X and its plug-in reference instead of trying to preserve it.
- You found the file on a DLL download page: do not replace the installed file with it. A random copy may be malicious, incompatible, or missing the companion files that GIF-X needs.
What anigif2.dll is
anigif2.dll is reported as Ulead GIF-X.Plugin, a plug-in component developed by Ulead Systems, Inc. Ulead GIF-X was designed for image-editing software and animated-GIF effects.

Available file metadata identifies the plug-in as a 32-bit Win32 component. That matters because a 64-bit image editor may be unable to load an old 32-bit plug-in even when the DLL is present.

The failing program is usually the image editor or plug-in host, not Windows. Corel PaintShop Pro is a documented example, but other compatible image editors may also report the same error.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Ulead GIF-X package
This is the most likely solution when the error appears only while loading GIF-X.
Do not begin by downloading a single replacement DLL. GIF-X may use an associated .8bf plug-in and other Ulead files. Replacing only anigif2.dll can leave the installation incomplete.

- Write down the name of the application showing the error.
- Note whether the error appears during startup or only when selecting a GIF-X filter.
- Open the application’s Help, About, or System Information screen.
- Record whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, if that information is shown.
If the error appears only when selecting GIF-X, the host is starting correctly. That points toward a plug-in installation, folder, dependency, or architecture problem.
Step 2: Remove the damaged GIF-X installation
Use the normal Windows uninstall interface:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for Ulead GIF-X, GIF-X.Plugin, or a related Ulead entry.
- Select it and choose Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If no Ulead entry appears, do not delete random DLLs from Windows folders. Continue with the original installer or installation media if available.
Step 3: Reinstall from a trusted source
Use the original Ulead GIF-X installation disc, installer, or a legitimate archived installer supplied by the software owner. No current official standalone Ulead GIF-X download was verified, so avoid unofficial DLL packages that claim to provide a newer or “fixed” copy.
During installation:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license and keep the complete installation selected.
- If the installer asks for a plug-in directory, choose the folder used by the compatible image editor.
- Finish the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the image editor and test GIF-X.
A successful repair means the host can open or apply the GIF-X effect without reporting anigif2.dll. The installation may also contain a file named AniGif2.8bf. That .8bf file and the DLL should be treated as part of the same plug-in installation, not as unrelated files.

Fix 2: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A DLL can be present and still be unusable. The available metadata identifies anigif2.dll as 32-bit, while many current image editors are 64-bit.
Check the host architecture
There is no single screen used by every image editor, but these methods usually work:
- Open the application’s Help menu.
- Select About or About [application name].
- Look for
32-bit,64-bit, orx64. - If it is not shown, check the application’s documentation or installation folder.
You can also inspect Task Manager:
- Start the image editor.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Look for an architecture or platform column if your Windows version provides one.
If the host is 64-bit and does not support older 32-bit plug-ins, reinstalling the DLL will not solve the problem. Use a compatible 32-bit edition of the image editor, or use another maintained animation or effects tool.

Check the plug-in folder
The host must search the folder containing the GIF-X files.

- Open the image editor.
- Open Edit, Preferences, or File Locations.
- Find the section named Plug-ins, Plugins, or Plug-in Paths.
- Review the listed folders.
- Add the folder containing the complete GIF-X installation if the host supports custom paths.
- Apply the change.
- Restart the image editor.
Do not place the DLL in System32 or SysWOW64 to make it visible. Those folders are for Windows and shared system components, not for making a graphics plug-in appear in an application’s plug-in menu.
If the host accepts only .8bf files in its plug-in directory, place the complete GIF-X plug-in files there according to the original installer’s layout. Do not scatter individual Ulead DLLs across several folders.
Fix 3: Repair PaintShop Pro if it is the failing host
If PaintShop Pro is named in the error, repair the host after checking the GIF-X installation.
- Close PaintShop Pro.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select PaintShop Pro.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete Ulead GIF-X package.
- Recheck the PaintShop Pro plug-in path.
A host repair can restore damaged application settings, but it may not reinstall a separately installed Ulead plug-in. That is why GIF-X should be reinstalled after the host repair.
Install any applicable update offered for your specific PaintShop Pro release. An update may improve compatibility, but it cannot turn a 32-bit plug-in into a 64-bit plug-in.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
If anigif2.dll was present and then disappeared, Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined it.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
anigif2.dll, Ulead GIF-X, or the installer. - Expand the event and review its detection details.
Do not restore the file solely because its name is associated with Ulead. Verify that it came from your original installation media or a legitimate software-owner archive, then scan the installer and system.
If the file is trusted and the detection is clearly incorrect:
- Open the protection-history entry.
- Select Actions.
- Choose Restore only if Windows Security offers that action and you have verified the file’s source.
- Add an exclusion only after understanding the security risk.
- Prefer reinstalling the complete product rather than restoring one DLL.
After restoring or reinstalling, test the plug-in. If the file is quarantined again, stop using that installer until its provenance and security status are resolved.

Fix 5: Check for missing companion files
The main DLL may depend on other Ulead or multimedia components. A third-party dependency listing associates it with files including USSGifsa5.dll, UssCvtGX.dll, u32Base5.dll, and u32ClAni.dll, along with Windows multimedia libraries.
Treat that list as indicative, not as an official Ulead dependency manifest. Do not search for each dependency separately on DLL download pages.
The safe procedure is:
- Uninstall GIF-X.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original GIF-X installer as administrator.
- Select the complete installation.
- Install it into the compatible host’s plug-in location.
- Restart the host.
- Test the filter again.
If an installer specifically names a missing Microsoft runtime, install that runtime only from Microsoft’s official distribution. Installing random runtime packages without an identified dependency is not the primary remedy for this plug-in.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore anigif2.dll, because this is a third-party Ulead file.
Use these commands when you also have symptoms such as damaged Windows features, repeated system-file errors, or other built-in applications failing.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the host application.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, Windows system files are not the likely cause. If it repairs files but GIF-X still fails, return to the GIF-X reinstall and 32-bit compatibility checks.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis harder. If manually identifying damaged Windows components is becoming time-consuming, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling Ulead GIF-X remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 unless the DLL requires registration
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A graphics plug-in is not automatically a COM or ActiveX component.
Running:
regsvr32 anigif2.dll
may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove the file is missing or damaged. It usually means the plug-in is not designed for system-wide COM registration.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically says that this component must be registered, or when the installer explicitly performs that operation. For normal GIF-X repair, reinstall the product and configure the host’s plug-in path instead.

Fix 8: Check Windows Features only for a separately identified dependency
Windows Features are not a normal repair route for anigif2.dll.
Do not enable random legacy components in the hope that the plug-in will load. If another error specifically names a Windows feature:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the feature named by the error or application documentation.
- Enable only that feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if required.
If no specific feature is named, leave Windows Features unchanged and continue troubleshooting the Ulead installation.

A missing plug-in DLL is not normally a graphics-driver failure. Update a driver only if the image editor reports a display, video, capture, or device error in addition to the DLL message.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the device category named in the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Retest the image editor.
Do not uninstall a working display adapter as a first response to anigif2.dll. If you do need to identify outdated drivers across several devices, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is not required for a normal GIF-X plug-in repair.
Fix 10: Use System Restore only after a recent software change
System Restore may help if GIF-X worked and failed immediately after an update, uninstall, or configuration change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
- Sign in again after Windows restarts.
- Reinstall GIF-X if the restore removed or damaged its files.
System Restore can revert applications, drivers, and settings. It should not be the first step when the Ulead installer is available.
If you no longer need Ulead GIF-X
Removing obsolete software is safer than leaving a broken plug-in reference in the host.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Uninstall Ulead GIF-X if it appears.
- Open the image editor’s Preferences or File Locations.
- Remove the GIF-X plug-in directory from the configured paths.
- Restart the editor.
- If the plug-in still appears, use the host’s plug-in management screen to disable it.
Do not delete unrelated files from Windows directories.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A DLL download page cannot reliably establish that its copy matches your Ulead GIF-X build. The file may have:
- The wrong architecture
- Different internal metadata
- Missing companion files
- A modified or malicious payload
- A location that does not match the host’s plug-in search path
Even a clean replacement may leave the actual problem untouched. If the 64-bit host cannot load a 32-bit plug-in, no replacement copy fixes that incompatibility.

Use the original GIF-X installation media or a legitimate installer supplied by the software owner. Keep a copy of the complete installer rather than backing up only anigif2.dll.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep the complete GIF-X installer with the application documentation.
- Record whether the working host is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Keep the GIF-X files together in the configured plug-in directory.
- Do not move the DLL into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not register the DLL unless official instructions require it.
- Check antivirus protection history before restoring quarantined files.
- Avoid replacing one plug-in file with a download from an unknown source.
- Before updating or removing the image editor, note its plug-in path.
- Consider replacing obsolete GIF-X functionality with a maintained tool if the current host no longer supports legacy plug-ins.

Is anigif2.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the legacy Ulead GIF-X.Plugin application.
