Nintendo’s version history lists January 14 as the release date, and contemporaneous coverage reported the update was available to download then. The dates describe the announced availability and the earlier downloads; they do not establish one release hour for every region.
When did the Animal Crossing 3.0 update drop?
Nintendo’s support history lists version 3.0.0 as released on January 14, 2026, while Nintendo’s FAQ says the update became available January 15. Nintendo Life reported that players were able to download it on January 14, ahead of the announced January 15 date. Nintendo’s version history, Nintendo’s FAQ, and Nintendo Life’s report therefore support the “a little early” description, without showing that the update went live at the same moment worldwide.
Contemporaneous reporting suggested the timing may have aligned with New Zealand, but Nintendo did not identify that as the reason. The available sources do not establish a definitive global rollout sequence or exact regional release times.
What’s new in the free 3.0 update?
A hotel with themed guest rooms
Kapp’n’s family operates a hotel where you design themed rooms for guests. Decorating rooms and completing certain DIY requests from Tom Nook earns hotel tickets, which can be spent at the hotel souvenir shop.

Slumber Islands
Slumber Islands are separate from your main island, so you can build and decorate another space without changing that island. With a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can create up to three, use items you have previously obtained, and connect with friends online. Nintendo says online features require internet access and a Nintendo Account and may not be available in every country. Nintendo’s update announcement describes the feature and its membership requirement.
Resetti’s cleanup service and expanded storage
Resetti can tidy a selected area or your entire island. The service can also put flowers and custom designs into storage. The update adds two storage upgrades, raises home storage to a maximum of 9,000 items, and lets you store trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Crafting and other quality-of-life changes
- Craft up to 10 of the same item at once, if you have enough materials.
- Use materials held in home storage when crafting DIY projects.
- The DIY Recipes app tracks hotel requests and requests from Tom Nook.
- Pocket Camp-linked items can always be ordered from Nook Shopping.
- Super Mario Bros. items can be ordered without linking a Nintendo Account.

Is the Animal Crossing 3.0 update free?
Yes. The 3.0 update is free for Animal Crossing: New Horizons players. It is separate from the paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and its optional upgrade pack. Nintendo lists the distinction this way:

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.

The Switch 2 Edition enhancements are not required to get the free 3.0 update. Nintendo’s FAQ describes the edition and upgrade pack; it does not make a regional price applicable everywhere.

- On the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu, highlight Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
- Press + or − to view the software version.
- Choose Software Update, then select Via the Internet to check for an update and download it.
Nintendo’s support history lists version 3.0.3, released April 29, 2026, as the latest version shown on that page. Its notes mention the 25th Anniversary leaf statue being available in Nook Shopping and a fix for missing item images. Thus, 3.0.0 is the update that arrived early, not the latest version listed by Nintendo. Check the version shown on your console for the software installed on your system. Nintendo’s version history and update instructions provide the details.
