The free update added Kapp’n’s family hotel, Slumber Islands, Resetti’s cleanup service and other features. Nintendo Support now lists version 3.0.3, so install the latest version available for your console rather than stopping at 3.0.0.
What the free 3.0 update adds
The update is free for owners of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. You do not need to buy the game again or purchase the separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade to get the 3.0 content. Nintendo described the release as adding “new items, activities, and conveniences” in its January 15, 2026 announcement.
Kapp’n’s family hotel
A hotel at the dock gives players themed guest rooms to decorate. Completing hotel work earns hotel tickets that can be used at its souvenir shop.
Slumber Islands
Create up to three islands separate from your main island, then terraform, build and decorate them with items you have previously obtained. Creating Slumber Islands and visiting friends online require Nintendo Switch Online.

Resetti’s cleanup service and expanded storage
Resetti can tidy a selected area or the entire island. The service can also send flowers or custom designs to storage. The update adds two home-storage upgrades, bringing the maximum capacity to 9,000; trees, shrubs and flowers can now be stored.
Collaborations and quality-of-life changes
New collaboration content includes LEGO items, retro Nintendo items, and content accessed by scanning select Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda amiibo accessories. Those accessories are sold separately; check compatibility for the specific accessory rather than assuming every figure or card unlocks the same content.

Other changes include crafting up to 10 items at once when you have the materials, using items in home storage as DIY materials, and buying up to 50 customization kits at once. Nintendo also lists further changes to catalogs, island tasks and daily conveniences.
How to download or check for the update
- Connect your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight Animal Crossing: New Horizons without opening it.
- Press the + or – button on the controller.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.

Free 3.0 content update vs. the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
The free 3.0 update and the Switch 2 Edition are separate. The update supplies the new game content to owners of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Nintendo lists enhanced resolution, mouse-control support, a microphone-based megaphone, CameraPlay/GameChat support and online sessions of up to 12 players as Switch 2 Edition enhancements. The original game and Switch 2 upgrade pack are separately listed products; the 3.0 update itself is not the paid upgrade. Nintendo Switch Online is required for online features.
Version history: 3.0.0 is not the latest release
Nintendo Support lists version 3.0.0 as released January 14, 2026. Nintendo’s public announcement followed on January 15, which is why early-launch headlines referred to the update going live ahead of the announcement. Later listed releases are 3.0.1 on February 18, 3.0.2 on April 13 and 3.0.3 on April 29, 2026. Version 3.0.3 adds a 25th Anniversary leaf statue to Nook Shopping and fixes an item-image display issue. Check the console for the latest available version.
