Buy the edition that matches your console and only pay for features you will use. If you are buying a game for a new Nintendo Switch 2, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is the straightforward choice. If you already own the Switch version and are moving to Switch 2, compare Nintendo’s upgrade pack with the cost of another physical copy before spending again. Owners of a Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED can stay with the original version. Amiibo are optional, and a USB camera is only relevant to Switch 2 video features such as CameraPlay.
Which Animal Crossing edition exists?
There are two relevant versions of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The original Nintendo Switch version released on March 20, 2020. It remains the standard edition for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED systems. Nintendo released Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on January 15, 2026. That edition is designed for Switch 2 and adds hardware-specific features rather than replacing the original game for older consoles.

| Edition | Console | Who should buy it | What it provides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch | Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED | Anyone using an original Switch-family console; existing owners who do not need Switch 2 features | The standard New Horizons experience |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Nintendo Switch 2 | New Switch 2 owners who want the enhanced presentation and controls | Enhanced resolution, mouse-control support for decorating and Custom Designs, and a microphone-based megaphone, plus other Switch 2 enhancements identified by Nintendo |
| Upgrade pack | For owners of the Switch version using Switch 2 | Players who already own the game and want the Switch 2 Edition features | Access to the Switch 2 Edition without automatically buying another complete game |
The key distinction is not the island-building content you already know; it is which hardware is running the game and whether you want the Switch 2-only enhancements. A Switch game card inserted into a Switch 2 can still run the Switch version, but it does not provide the Switch 2-exclusive features by itself.
What to buy for each type of player
New Nintendo Switch 2 owner
Choose the physical Switch 2 Edition if you are buying New Horizons for the first time and want the enhanced features. It is the cleanest one-purchase route: you receive the edition built for the console instead of starting with the older version and then adding an upgrade. This recommendation assumes the Switch 2 enhancements matter to you; if they do not, the standard version can still be relevant, but buying the Switch 2 Edition avoids an unnecessary compatibility decision later.

Existing Switch owner moving to Switch 2
Start with the copy you already own. Nintendo provides an upgrade-pack path for Switch-version owners who want access to the Switch 2 Edition. Compare that option with buying another physical copy at the prices available when you purchase. A second full game may be convenient if you specifically want a separate physical product, but it is not the only Nintendo-supported route to the enhanced edition.
Do not assume that inserting your existing Switch card into Switch 2 automatically upgrades it. The card can run the original Switch version, while the Switch 2-exclusive resolution, mouse support and microphone megaphone remain unavailable unless you obtain access to the Switch 2 Edition.
Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED owner
Buy or keep the original Switch version. Nintendo identifies that edition as the standard release for all three Switch-family systems, and the Switch 2 features do not apply to those consoles. There is no practical reason to pay for Switch 2-specific enhancements when your hardware cannot use them.
Someone choosing a physical copy
For a first-time Switch 2 buyer, the Switch 2 Edition physical product is the simplest match. For an existing owner, a new physical copy is a preference and pricing decision rather than a requirement; check the upgrade-pack option first. Always confirm that the package is labeled for the console you actually own, especially when retailers place Switch and Switch 2 products beside each other.
What the Switch 2 Edition actually adds
Enhanced resolution
Nintendo lists enhanced resolution as one of the Switch 2 Edition improvements. The official description does not establish a single resolution figure that applies to every display mode, so treat this as a presentation upgrade rather than a promise of a particular pixel count. It matters most if you play on a larger screen, care about cleaner detail, or are buying the game specifically to take advantage of Switch 2 hardware.
Mouse-control support
The Switch 2 Edition supports mouse control for faster and easier decorating and for working with Custom Designs. This is a targeted convenience feature: it can make precise placement and design-related tasks feel more direct, but it is not a requirement for ordinary movement, collecting, crafting or island progression. Players who spend substantial time arranging rooms, paths or patterns are the clearest audience for this enhancement.
Microphone megaphone
A Switch 2 microphone-powered megaphone lets you call your animal residents. Nintendo describes it as a megaphone that uses the system microphone. It is an interaction feature rather than a replacement for the game’s normal controls, so its value depends on whether voice-based calling sounds useful or entertaining to you.
Rank #2
- Share Your Paradise - Show off your island utopia to family and friends - or pack your bags and visit theirs.
- Get Building - Experience a robust new crafting system - collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools!
- Create Your Perfect Getaway - Craft everything from tools to creature comforts as you create and customize your island community.
- Explore Your Island - Collect bugs, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean.
- Play Together - Up to eight players can reside on an island; four residents of the same island can play together simultaneously on a single system.
Other Switch 2 features
Nintendo’s product description says the listed improvements come “and more,” but the documented buying decision rests on the features specifically identified: resolution, mouse controls and the microphone megaphone. Do not pay a premium based on an assumed feature that is not clearly listed for the edition you are considering.
Upgrade pack or another physical copy?
For an existing owner, compare the choices using four questions:
- Do you already own the Switch game? If yes, the upgrade pack is the relevant Nintendo-supported path to the Switch 2 Edition.
- Do you need the enhanced features? If improved resolution, decorating with a mouse or the microphone megaphone will not change how you play, continuing with the Switch version may be sufficient even on Switch 2.
- Do you specifically want another cartridge? A second physical product can suit collectors or households that want a separate copy, but it duplicates a game you already own.
- What is the current price where you live? No universal price is currently published, and retail prices and promotions change. Compare the upgrade-pack cost with the complete physical product at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old listing.
This comparison also prevents a common mistake: buying the full Switch 2 Edition before checking whether the upgrade route covers your existing copy. The physical Switch card remains playable on Switch 2 as the original edition, so you can make the upgrade decision after confirming which features you want.
Which accessories are actually useful?
Animal Crossing amiibo cards and figures
Amiibo cards and figures are optional additions, not required gameplay hardware. Nintendo documents compatibility with Animal Crossing amiibo Series 1–5, the Welcome amiibo range and the Sanrio Collaboration Pack. Supported cards or figures can be tapped to trigger the character invitations and scanning interactions that Nintendo provides for the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuy amiibo when you have a defined target: inviting a supported character, using a documented scanning interaction, or collecting the cards and figures themselves. Before buying a particular item, check that it belongs to one of the supported groups and that the product description matches the character or function you want. An amiibo purchase made without a specific use is primarily a collectible expense, not an essential upgrade to the base game.
Compatible USB camera
Nintendo says a compatible camera is sold separately and is required for Switch 2 video features. That requirement applies to features such as CameraPlay; it is not presented as a requirement for ordinary island play. Most players should therefore skip a camera unless they already intend to use the Switch 2 video functions.
Check compatibility before purchasing because the requirement is for a compatible USB camera, not simply any camera with a USB plug. If your plan is only to decorate, talk to residents and play the standard game, the camera adds no documented necessity.
Rank #3
- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
Cases, grips and themed collectibles
Cases, grips and other themed accessories belong in the comfort, protection or collecting category. The official compatibility information does not identify them as required gameplay hardware. A case can be sensible if you carry the console; a grip can be sensible if it improves your comfort; a collectible can be sensible if you value its design. None should be treated as a way to unlock the Switch 2 Edition features.

What to skip
- Skip rebuying the complete Switch 2 Edition before checking the upgrade pack if you already own the Switch version and only want enhanced features.
- Skip amiibo if supported invitations and scanning interactions do not interest you. The documented game requirements do not make amiibo necessary.
- Skip the camera unless you plan to use CameraPlay or another Switch 2 video feature that needs it.
- Skip generic themed accessories that do not match your console model or a clear use. Verify Switch or Switch 2 compatibility before ordering.
- Skip paying for Switch 2 enhancements on an original Switch-family console. The original Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED cannot use those hardware-specific additions.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the console. Write down whether you own Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED or Switch 2. Do not rely on a seller’s product photo alone.
- Check whether you already own New Horizons. Existing Switch-version owners should investigate the upgrade pack before buying a second complete game.
- Rank the Switch 2 features. If enhanced resolution, mouse-assisted decorating or the microphone megaphone has no value to you, the original version may meet your needs.
- Choose the edition. First-time Switch 2 buyers should generally select the Switch 2 Edition; older-console owners should select the standard Switch version.
- Add accessories only for a stated purpose. Choose amiibo for supported scans or invitations, a camera for Switch 2 video features, and cases or grips for protection and comfort.
- Recheck compatibility and current pricing. Product availability and prices can change, and a similarly named accessory may fit a different console model.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking a Switch card for a Switch 2 upgrade
The existing Switch card runs on Switch 2 as the Switch version. That compatibility is useful, but it does not itself add the Switch 2 Edition features. Decide separately whether to obtain the upgrade pack.
Buying a camera for normal play
A camera is tied to Switch 2 video features, not the basic island loop. If you have no plan to use CameraPlay, leave it out of the initial purchase.
Assuming every amiibo works the same way
Nintendo’s documented compatibility names Series 1–5, Welcome amiibo and the Sanrio Collaboration Pack. Use those categories as your check before buying and treat unsupported or unclear listings cautiously.
Ignoring the console model printed on an accessory
A themed case or grip can look universal while fitting only one system shape. Confirm whether it is for Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED or Switch 2 before checkout.
The short decision guide
| Your situation | Best starting choice | Accessory stance |
|---|---|---|
| First New Horizons purchase with Switch 2 | Switch 2 Edition | Buy amiibo or a camera only for a planned use |
| Own the Switch version and are moving to Switch 2 | Compare the upgrade pack with another physical copy | Keep existing accessories unless a new feature gives you a reason to add one |
| Use Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED | Original Switch version | Amiibo remain optional; skip Switch 2-only hardware |
| Collect characters rather than expand gameplay | Choose the edition for your console | Consider supported amiibo as collectibles, with scanning functions as a bonus |
| Want CameraPlay or another Switch 2 video feature | Switch 2 Edition or an eligible upgrade | Add a compatible USB camera |
Bottom line
The console you own and whether you already have the game determine the sensible purchase. New Switch 2 players should start with the Switch 2 Edition; existing owners should price the upgrade pack before rebuying; and original Switch-family players can use the standard edition. Amiibo are for supported character and scanning interactions or collecting, while a compatible USB camera is only justified by Switch 2 video features. Everything else is a comfort, protection or cosmetic choice rather than a requirement.
