In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the items players often call seeds are sold as crop starts or vegetable seedlings. Buy them from Leif, plant them in open ground, and water them as they grow to improve your harvest. The game is available for Nintendo Switch; see Nintendo’s game page.
Where to buy crop starts
Leif is the direct source for vegetable seedlings in the game. When he visits your island, check his stall for crop starts and buy the ones you want with in-game Bells. Nintendo’s beginner guide uses the term “vegetable seedlings,” while practical guides commonly call the items starts; “seeds” is a familiar player shorthand. Nintendo’s beginner guide identifies Leif as a seedling source, and Nintendo Life’s crop guide explains buying and growing crops.
Leif’s stock can vary, so a visit does not guarantee that a particular crop will be available. A specialist guide also reports that Kapp’n boat tours can lead to islands where produce starts are found. Treat that as an alternate discovery route rather than a guaranteed way to find a specific crop. Game8’s farming guide describes both routes.
Which crops can you grow?
The six named produce crops covered by the guides are carrots, potatoes, pumpkins, sugarcane, tomatoes, and wheat. Nintendo’s overview names tomatoes, wheat, sugarcane, potatoes, and carrots; specialist farming guides also include pumpkins. How to plant and grow crops
- Get a crop start. Check Leif’s stall first; Kapp’n boat-tour islands are another reported route.
- Choose open ground. Plant the start in an available outdoor spot.
- Water the growing crop. Watering helps improve the eventual harvest. Nintendo Life and Nintendo Wire both describe watering as part of crop care. Nintendo Wire’s crop guide
- Harvest when the crop is ready. The exact growth timer is not established here for every crop, so do not assume all produce follows the same schedule.
Pumpkin growth time and watering
Nintendo’s seasonal pumpkin advice says pumpkins grown from starts take three days to grow and that watering affects how many pumpkins you can harvest. That timing is pumpkin-specific; it should not be applied to carrots, potatoes, sugarcane, tomatoes, or wheat without crop-specific evidence. Play Nintendo’s fall tips

What to expect from farming
- Use the in-game name when shopping: ask for or look for crop starts or vegetable seedlings, rather than expecting a separate seed item.
- Check stock instead of planning around a guaranteed rotation: the sources do not establish a precise current schedule or assure that every crop appears on each visit.
- Water for a better yield: watering improves production, but the cited guidance does not establish that every crop must be watered every day.
