How to choose a gift for a specific villager
- Decide what you want the gift to do. Choose clothing if you want to give something wearable, furniture if you prioritize the higher base friendship points listed in community mechanics references, or a valuable wrapped item if you are pursuing a framed photo.
- Check the villager’s preferences before choosing clothes. Residents have individual favorite colors and styles. Nintendo Life describes a guide covering nearly 400 villagers and points readers to a personalized gift lookup, but its own preference table was not available in the reviewed page. - Match the item to your island priorities. Furniture, bugs, and flowers may be displayed in a villager’s home. If you want to avoid changing the room, clothing is a more appropriate choice, though the reviewed guidance does not establish that any clothing gift is guaranteed to leave the home untouched. iMore’s gift guide

What gift categories affect friendship?
Nookipedia lists the following base points for gifts. These are community-maintained mechanics, not figures published by Nintendo, and may be version-sensitive.

Wrapping adds a point according to the reference, with further value-based bonuses for higher-value gifts. Best approach for common gift goals
If you want the villager to wear the gift
Look up that villager’s favorite colors and styles, then choose clothing that matches at least one listed preference. The matching preference is relevant to the gift’s listed friendship value, but it does not guarantee the villager will wear the item. Because preferences differ by resident, avoid one-size-fits-all clothing recommendations.

If you want friendship points without changing a home
Clothing that matches a favorite color or style is listed at +2 base points by Nookipedia, while furniture is listed at +3. The tradeoff is that some furniture and other gifts may appear in the villager’s home. Consider clothing when preserving the interior matters more than the additional listed furniture point.
If you are trying to get a framed photo
A framed photo is a longer-term friendship reward, not a guaranteed result of one present. The community-maintained ACNH FAQ reports an estimated 6–10% chance per qualifying gift after reaching high friendship, provided the gift has a sell-back value of at least 750 Bells. Build friendship beyond daily gifts
Nintendo’s Play Nintendo guidance recommends talking to neighbors every day, visiting a villager’s home on their birthday with a gift, and sending letters or gifts through the airport card stand. Daily conversation and occasional gifts are useful parts of getting to know residents, but Nintendo’s guidance does not quantify the friendship effects of these activities. For a particular villager, use a current preference lookup for clothing, wrap an appropriate item, and treat photo timing as uncertain.
