The 2020 iMore roundup is best treated as a gallery of community-made design ideas—not a tested ranking. Its examples range from realistic asphalt to garden trails and decorative moats, and some original creator links or uploads may no longer be available.
Street designs: asphalt, markings, and cobblestone
For a town-like street, look for asphalt designs with painted lane markings, sidewalks, or other road details. A cobblestone street offers a more old-fashioned look, while a tiled surface can make a plaza or walkway feel deliberately designed. Choose based on whether the area should read as a road, a sidewalk, or a town square.
Brick and stone paving
Brick and paver patterns work well for paths between buildings, courtyards, and entrances. Compare the brick color and the shape and scale of the paving: strong contrast can make a route stand out, while a subtler stone texture can blend into a more natural island palette. The roundup presents these as visual options, not as designs ranked for fit or visibility.
Natural trails and wood paths
For a less urban look, the collection includes dirt paths, faded-grass trails, garden-row patterns, and wood planks. Dirt and grass can make a route feel worn or informal; garden designs suit planted areas, while wooden paths can distinguish a boardwalk or rustic approach from ordinary ground.

Waterways, ponds, and moats
Water-themed designs include reservoir or pond tiles, ornamental moats, and icy-looking waterways. These are decorative surface choices rather than ordinary walking paths. Consider how the water effect will sit beside surrounding grass, paving, or buildings, and whether you want a natural pond impression or a more formal feature.
Railroad and train-track designs
Rail designs give an island a transport or industrial theme. They read differently from pedestrian paths, so use them where the track motif is intentional—such as beside a station-like build or through a themed area—rather than as a general route between destinations.

QR codes and New Horizons design IDs are different
NookLink QR scanning imports supported custom designs from Animal Crossing: New Leaf or Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. A Creator ID or Design ID, by contrast, is searched through the in-game Custom Designs Portal; it is not a QR code to scan. Nintendo’s QR-code instructions cover the legacy-design route. For the portal route, use the Able Sisters kiosk or the NookPhone design application as described in iMore’s Custom Designs Portal guide.

- Activate NookLink in the game: from the New Horizons title screen, press the minus button, choose NookLink settings, then select Yes, please.
- Link the app: sign in to the Nintendo Switch App with the same Nintendo Account linked to your game, then open the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game service and its Designs feature.
- Scan the code: use the app’s QR scanner for the legacy design. If a Pro clothing pattern is split across four codes, scan the needed codes sequentially so the complete design is saved.
- Download it in-game: open the NookPhone’s custom-design application, retrieve the saved design, and choose an available slot.
Nintendo Life’s QR import guide notes that Pro designs can require four scans and that designs created by other players cannot be edited. If you already have a Creator ID or Design ID for a design made in New Horizons, search that ID in the Custom Designs Portal instead of trying to scan it through NookLink.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
How to choose a design for your island
- Match the surface to the job: use road markings for a street, paving for a plaza, and dirt, grass, or wood for a natural trail.
- Check color and texture against nearby builds: brick, stone, and asphalt can make the same route feel very different.
- Reserve distinctive motifs for the right place: water tiles, moats, and rail tracks are strongest when the surrounding area supports the theme.
- Expect older links to be unreliable: the examples were collected in 2020, and creator posts or uploaded designs may have changed or disappeared.
