Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is an enhanced version of the familiar island-life game, not a major content overhaul. Nintendo Life gave it 6/10, while review excerpts collected by Metacritic praise sharper visuals and mouse-assisted decorating but question how much the edition offers longtime players. That is a synthesis of the cited reviews, not a universal critic consensus.
What critics think of the Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo Life reviewer Alex Olney scored the European version 6/10 (“Not Bad”) on January 15, 2026. The review credits the resolution increase and additional options, but considers the upgrade limited overall rather than especially exciting for returning players. Read Nintendo Life’s review.
Metacritic’s Switch 2 critic-review page reproduces excerpts that emphasize different trade-offs. Nintenduo highlights reduced loading, 4K resolution, and mouse decorating, while noting a 30 FPS cap. Areajugones questions whether the edition adds enough significant exclusive content to attract veterans. GAMES.CH points to the free 3.0 update and the larger online-player limit. These are attributed outlet comments surfaced by an aggregator, not a single shared verdict or a basis for claiming an overall score. See the Metacritic critic-review page.
What the Switch 2 Edition adds
Nintendo lists these edition-specific features for Nintendo Switch 2:
#1 Best Overall
- Build your own paradise as you explore, create, and customize in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game.
- Switch 2 Edition: This game is the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It includes the Nintendo Switch game plus upgrade pack, which includes enhancements for play on Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- Upgrade: You can purchase a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade pack for this game (full version of game required to use this content; sold separately).
- If you and your friends all have the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, you can share your island in 12-player sessions online*—and with CameraPlay and GameChat** support, you can see and hear their reactions in real time!
- Enhanced resolution: up to 4K when playing in TV mode.
- Mouse controls: use the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for activities such as decorating.
- Megaphone: use the console’s microphone to call for island residents. Nintendo says to purchase the Megaphone from Nook’s Cranny.
- CameraPlay: connect a compatible USB-C camera to bring players’ faces into supported play. The camera is sold separately.
- Larger online sessions: up to 12 players can play online; local wireless supports up to eight.
These features do not turn the game into a new Animal Crossing installment. The cited reviews describe a familiar core experience with a visual and feature upgrade; their disagreement is mainly about how much that package matters to different players. Nintendo’s UK edition page lists the feature set and requirements.
Don’t confuse the paid edition with the free 3.0 update
The free Version 3.0.0 update arrived on January 14, 2026, for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Its content and gameplay additions are separate from the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition’s hardware-dependent features. In other words, players on the original Switch can receive the update without buying a Switch 2 Edition upgrade; paying for the edition is about its additional Switch 2 features, not access to the shared free update. Nintendo Support’s software update history records version releases and later patches, so consult the live page for the current version.

- Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
- Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
- Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
- Show off your paradise – Play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players
Is it worth buying for you?
If you are new to Animal Crossing
For a new Switch 2 owner, this is the straightforward way to get the game with the edition’s enhanced resolution and added controls and play options. The strongest case is for someone who wants to start the island-life game and expects to use one or more of those features. The reviews do not describe a substantially different core game, so the edition’s appeal depends on how useful the enhancements are to you.
If you already own the Switch version
Existing owners can choose an upgrade pack rather than treating the full game purchase as their only route. If sharper output, mouse-assisted decorating, CameraPlay, or larger online sessions are not priorities, the cited reviews give little reason to expect a large new single-player experience from the paid edition alone. Compare Nintendo’s upgrade option with the full physical Switch 2 Edition before buying; prices and stock vary by region and retailer.

If you mainly want the free update
Do not buy the paid upgrade solely to obtain Version 3.0.0: Nintendo released that update for the original Switch as well. The Switch 2 Edition is relevant if its distinct Switch 2 features are worth the extra cost to you.
Requirements to know before choosing
- The added edition features require Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo says a Switch 2 Edition game card used in an original Switch plays the Switch version without those extra features.
- CameraPlay requires a compatible USB-C camera, sold separately; it is optional, not a requirement for ordinary play.
- Online play requires an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. GameChat has additional conditions described by Nintendo.
- This title does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud. Nintendo describes a separate backup and recovery service for members; check the edition page for the applicable conditions.
Release date and platform note
Nintendo lists January 15, 2026 as the Switch 2 Edition’s release date in the UK. Regional availability and product details can differ; the feature and release information here follows Nintendo’s UK listing. The Nintendo Life score cited above is specifically for the European version.
