Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ version 3.0 update is free on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The paid Switch 2 Edition adds upgraded hardware features, including 4K TV-mode output, mouse controls and larger online sessions. It launched on January 15, 2026; Nintendo’s support history lists version 3.0.3, released April 29, 2026.
What is free in the version 3.0 update?
Nintendo says the version 3.0 content is playable in both Switch versions, so you do not need to buy the Switch 2 Edition to access the new hotel or other core update content. The update adds a resort hotel run by Kapp’n’s family, themed items and characters, and Slumber Island for Nintendo Switch Online members. Nintendo announced the update and edition; its version 3.0.0 notes also detail several practical changes.

Hotel and crafting additions
The hotel gives players a new setting and themed requests to work through. The update also lets you craft up to 10 items at once if you have the materials, and use items in home storage as DIY materials. A DIY Recipes app page covers hotel requests and items requested by Tom Nook.
Slumber Island
Slumber Island is for Nintendo Switch Online members. Eligible players can design and save up to three islands, choose their size and layout, decorate with others online, use inventory, and invite residents from their home island.

What does the Switch 2 Edition add?
The paid edition adds features tied to Switch 2 hardware. Nintendo announced it with a 4K TV-mode output option, capped at 30 frames per second, when connected to a compatible display. It also adds right Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for indoor decorating, Custom Designs and bulletin-board messages; an in-game megaphone that uses the built-in microphone; and CameraPlay with a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Nintendo does not name a particular supported camera model in the cited product information.
The edition also supports online sessions of up to 12 players, provided every participant is playing the Switch 2 Edition. This is not a general 12-player limit for mixed Switch and Switch 2 Edition sessions.

Do you need to buy the Switch 2 Edition?
No, not to play the version 3.0 content. Choose based on the platform you own and whether the Switch 2-specific features matter to you.
- Already own the Switch game: You can keep playing the free update on Switch, or buy the Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack if you want its hardware-specific additions.
- Buying the game for Switch 2: The full Switch 2 Edition is the direct option if you want those additions.
- Interested only in the hotel and other version 3.0 content: The free update is available in both versions, so the paid edition is not required for that content.
How much is the Switch 2 upgrade?
At announcement, Nintendo gave U.S. MSRP figures of $64.99 for the full Switch 2 Edition and $4.99 for the upgrade pack for existing Switch-game owners. These are announcement prices, not a live price check; prices and availability can vary by region and change. Check your regional Nintendo eShop or store before buying, and compare the upgrade pack with the full edition if you already own the game. Nintendo’s announcement lists the U.S. MSRP figures.

Is Happy Home Paradise included?
No. Happy Home Paradise is separate downloadable content, not part of the free version 3.0 update. Nintendo says it can be bought separately or accessed through an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Access through the membership lasts only while that membership is active; separately purchased DLC remains playable. See Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise DLC FAQ for access details.
