Choose Animal Crossing: New Horizons if you want an open-ended island to decorate and enjoy at your own pace. Choose Stardew Valley if you want farming to drive your progress, with town relationships, crafting and potentially dangerous cave exploration along the way. Neither is a universal winner; the better fit depends on the activities you want to return to.
How the two games differ
Animal Crossing: New Horizons gives you an island life built around varied, low-pressure activities. Nintendo lists gardening, fishing, decorating, bug and fossil collecting, and meeting animal residents. It describes the game as one players can enjoy at their own pace. Nintendo’s game listing
Stardew Valley starts with an inherited farm. Its official feature description centers on tending crops, raising animals, fishing and crafting, alongside relationships in Pelican Town and exploration in caves. Those caves contain dangerous monsters as well as valuable treasures. Stardew Valley’s official site
Calling Animal Crossing more sandbox-like and Stardew Valley more progression-oriented is an interpretation of their documented features, not the result of a controlled comparison. In practical terms, the first puts island life and flexible activities in the foreground; the second makes developing a farm the central project.
