If you want the daily routines and friendly community of Animal Crossing, start with Stardew Valley or Hello Kitty Island Adventure. For a more whimsical, spirit-centered mood, try Cozy Grove or Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition. These games share selected moods or activities with Animal Crossing or films associated with Studio Ghibli; none should be treated as an official Ghibli game on that basis.
Choose by the kind of cozy play you want
“Cozy” covers different gameplay loops: making a home, building friendships, farming, crafting, solving puzzles, or exploring a gentle fantasy world. The closest fit depends more on the activity you want than on a promise that another game will reproduce Animal Crossing or a Studio Ghibli film.

For Animal Crossing-style routines, friendship, and home-making
Stardew Valley — community life, with farming at the center
Stardew Valley is the strongest pick here if the appeal of Animal Crossing is settling into a place, improving a home, and getting to know its residents. Nintendo describes turning overgrown fields into a thriving home and winning the hearts of local people. The key difference is that farming is central, not an optional backdrop. If you specifically want a cozy game without farming, choose another option on this list. See Nintendo’s Switch cozy-game recommendations for its description.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure — island friendships and crafted gifts
Choose Hello Kitty Island Adventure if you want an island setting and a focus on becoming friends with familiar characters. Nintendo highlights baking, cooking, and crafting gifts to build friendships with Sanrio characters. That makes it a closer match for friendship-and-gift routines than for a deep home-design or town-management loop. Its recommendation appears in Nintendo Australia and New Zealand’s January 2026 roundup.
Tiny Bookshop — a quieter kind of community sim
Tiny Bookshop trades island decorating for a small seaside business. You open a bookshop and recommend books to locals, making it a good alternative if gentle tasks and recurring community encounters matter more to you than farming or building a home. Nintendo includes it in its cozy-game roundup.
For whimsical worlds, nature, and spirits
Cozy Grove — a haunted island with a helping focus
Cozy Grove combines island exploration with crafting and helping ghosts. Nintendo describes an ever-changing haunted island where you soothe local spirits. It suits players drawn to a gentle, supernatural setting and small acts of care rather than a conventional village-building routine. Nintendo UK’s cozy-game list describes its premise.

- Stray is a single-player third-person cat adventure game set amidst the detailed, neon-lit alleys of a decaying cybercity
- Untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten cybercity in Stray
- Physical edition comes with 6 Full-Color Art Cards
- Don't miss out on this one-of -a-kind third-person cat adventure game developed by BlueTwelve Studio for Nintendo Switch.
Winter Burrow — a woodland home and a search
In Winter Burrow, a mouse returns to restore a childhood burrow and search for a missing aunt. Baking pies and resting by the fireplace give the woodland adventure its homey feel. It is a fit if you want a small-scale, story-led nature setting rather than an island routine. Nintendo featured it in its January 2026 cozy roundup.

Fae Farm pairs a magical homestead with meeting characters. Nintendo says it can be played solo or with up to three other players, so it is the clearest choice in this group if you specifically want to share a fantasy-farming game with friends. The player-count description is from Nintendo’s roundup.
For a more emotional story: Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is a cozy management game, but not a lightweight escape from difficult themes. Nintendo’s product description calls it “a cozy management game about dying.” You build and explore a boat, care for and befriend spirits, and help them move on. The activities include farming, mining, fishing, harvesting, cooking, and crafting; the central emotional subject is death, grief, and farewell.

A Little to the Left — order and arrangement
If the satisfying part of cozy games for you is putting things in order, A Little to the Left is a puzzle game rather than a town or home life sim. It asks you to arrange household objects, with a mischievous cat complicating some scenes. Nintendo’s Switch recommendations describe its organizing puzzles.

What “like Studio Ghibli” means here
Some cozy games can feel Ghibli-adjacent through cute characters, magic, pastoral closeness to nature, or stories about spirits. A 2025 academic article discusses those patterns and points to spirit-centered games including Cozy Grove and Spiritfarer, while also noting that cozy games can contain sadness and loss. That is a comparison of mood and themes, not evidence of Studio Ghibli’s involvement, endorsement, or licensing. Read the 2025 article on cozy games for its discussion of the genre and spirit stories.
