Yes: the unofficial ACGC-PC-Port can run on Steam Deck through Proton, according to a demonstration covered by PC Guide. Steam Deck HQ reported 60 FPS and roughly 7–8 watts of power use in that demonstration, but those figures are attributed observations—not independent benchmark results. The port is a fan-made native PC implementation of the original GameCube game, not an official Nintendo release, and it requires a compatible copy of the game.

What the Animal Crossing PC port is

ACGC-PC-Port is an unofficial native PC port based on the Animal Crossing decompilation project. Its GitHub repository says it runs the game’s original C code natively on x86, with a custom translation layer that replaces the GameCube GX graphics API with OpenGL 3.3. It is distinct from both the original GameCube release and an emulator such as Dolphin.

The repository does not contain the game’s assets or assembly. It requires an existing copy of the game, and the stated supported revision is GAFE01_00: Rev 0 (USA). That is a specific North American revision; the repository does not establish compatibility with other regional versions.

What the Steam Deck demonstration reported

In a report updated March 18, 2026, PC Guide says Steam Deck HQ demonstrated the port on Valve’s handheld with SteamOS through Proton, naming Proton GE 10-32 for that demonstration. PC Guide attributes the performance comments to Steam Deck HQ: the game reportedly ran at a steady 60 FPS, with power use around 7–8 watts depending on the in-game location. The coverage also says the gamepad worked without changing the control scheme. These are observations from that demonstration, not a guarantee for every Deck, port build, or Proton version.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

PC Guide reports that the port’s default resolution is 640×480 and that 1280×720 worked best in the Steam Deck demonstration. It also reports options up to 4K, along with windowed, borderless, and fullscreen modes, VSync, anti-aliasing, and texture loading and caching. The repository independently documents resolution options up to 4K, fullscreen, VSync, MSAA, and texture loading and caching. The suggested 720p setting is specific to PC Guide’s report, not a universal optimum.

For the demonstrated 16:9 setup, PC Guide says Steam Deck HQ preferred the port’s display handling to Dolphin because the native port avoided stretching the image without an extra widescreen hack. That is a comparison of the reported setup, not a finding that applies to every Dolphin configuration.

How to get started on a PC

The repository’s quick start is aimed at people using a pre-built release; it says build tools are not required for that route.

  1. Obtain a pre-built release of ACGC-PC-Port from the project’s GitHub repository.
  2. Provide a compatible existing copy of the game. The repository identifies GAFE01_00: Rev 0 (USA) as the supported revision and says the port itself does not include game assets.
  3. Place the disc image in the release’s rom/ folder, as directed by the repository.
  4. Run AnimalCrossing.exe.

The repository establishes the software requirement, but it does not settle whether creating, possessing, or using a disc image is lawful in a reader’s jurisdiction. Do not assume that downloading a game image from an online source is authorized.

Controls, graphics, and saves

The repository documents several features that can matter beyond the Steam Deck demo:

  • Customizable keyboard bindings.
  • SDL2 game-controller support, automatic hotplug detection, and GameCube-style button mapping.
  • Configurable graphics options, custom texture packs, and texture loading and caching.
  • Standard GCI save files, with compatibility for saves exported from Dolphin.

These documented features make the project relevant to desktop PC players as well as handheld users. The available sources do not establish exhaustive hardware, operating-system, or Proton compatibility, so a successful Deck demonstration should not be read as a universal compatibility promise.

  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Native port or Dolphin?

The practical distinction is that Dolphin emulates GameCube hardware, while ACGC-PC-Port runs the decompiled game code natively on x86 and translates its graphics calls through OpenGL 3.3. The Deck coverage reports a display advantage for the port in one widescreen configuration, while the repository documents GCI saves compatible with Dolphin exports. Neither source establishes that the port replaces Dolphin for every game revision, device, or display setup.

What you need—and what you do not

A Steam Deck is not a stated requirement: the project is a PC port, and its repository documents keyboard, controller, graphics, and save features. To use it, the essential requirement described by the project is an existing copy of the specifically supported game revision. The sources do not say that users need to buy a particular controller or new handheld hardware.
