Anime Card Rarity Codes: What C, U, R, SR and UR Mean

Anime card rarity codes are game-specific. Learn how Pokémon symbols and Japanese codes differ from Yu-Gi-Oh! finishes, and how to check a card’s exact version.

There is no universal anime-card rarity code system. A mark such as SR can mean different things in different games, and rarity names and symbols can also vary by language, set and product. To identify a card accurately, start with its game and language, then check the set and full card number; do not use the rarity mark alone to judge its price, strength or pack odds.

This guide reflects information available through September 2024, with a separately dated note for a game that launched afterward.

What does C, U, R, SR or UR mean on an anime card?

The letters are shorthand only within a particular game’s system. For example, Pokémon’s Japanese Scarlet & Violet cards use C, U and R for Common, Uncommon and Rare, while its English Scarlet & Violet cards use symbols for those base tiers. Yu-Gi-Oh! instead identifies rarities by names and card finishes. So a code cannot be decoded reliably without identifying the game and the card’s language or region.

The Pokémon Company’s explanation of English Scarlet & Violet-era cards describes these rarity marks:

Pokémon TCG: Japanese Scarlet & Violet cards

A Japanese guide updated April 19, 2024 lists C as Common, U as Uncommon and R as Rare. It also discusses RR (Double Rare), SR (Super Rare), AR (Art Rare), SAR (Special Art Rare) and UR (Ultra Rare). These are Japanese Scarlet & Violet labels—not a translation key that should automatically be applied to English cards or another game. See the guide’s rarity and card FAQ.

Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG: rarity is often a finish

Yu-Gi-Oh! uses named rarities, and the visual treatment of the card can help distinguish them. Konami lists Common, Rare, Super Rare, Ultra Rare, Premium Gold Rare, Ultimate Rare, Secret Rare, Prismatic Secret Rare, Collector’s Rare, Starlight Rare and Ghost Rare among rarities found across different products. Common visual cues include:

  • Common: no foil embellishment.
  • Rare: an embossed silver foil name, without artwork foiling.
  • Super Rare: holographic card art, without a foil name.
  • Ultra Rare: a gold or colorful foil name and holographic art.
  • Secret Rare: a rainbow-colored foil name and sparkling holographic art.

Those cues describe the finishes on Konami’s Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG rarity guide. A rarity may not appear in every product: Konami advises checking each set’s information to confirm which rarities are available.

Are rarity codes the same across anime card games?

No. Codes and finishes belong to a game’s own system, and even one game can change its presentation by language, era or product. The examples above are deliberately tied to English and Japanese Pokémon Scarlet & Violet cards and to Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG finishes. They should not be combined into one cross-game ranking.

One Piece Card Game illustrates another distinction: its labels such as C, UC, R, SR and SEC describe base rarity, while parallel or alternate-art versions can be different printings of a card. A present-day guide dated August 11, 2026 recommends matching the complete card number and exact artwork/version when identifying one. Because that guide postdates September 2024, it is supplementary context rather than evidence of the September 2024 card pool. See the One Piece rarity guide.

How to identify a card’s rarity correctly

  1. Identify the game. Do not interpret a mark such as R or SR until you know which trading card game issued it.
  2. Check the language or region. A Japanese code list may not match an English card’s symbols or terminology.
  3. Find the set or product. Rarity availability can differ from one release to another; use the game’s official set information where available.
  4. Match the complete card number and version. Compare the printed number and the artwork, including whether the card is a base, parallel or alternate-art version.
  5. Use the game-specific rarity reference. Check the card’s symbol or finish against guidance for that game, language and era rather than relying on a generic online list.

Does a higher rarity mean a stronger or more valuable card?

Not by itself. A rarity label identifies a game-defined category or treatment; it does not establish how powerful a card is in play or what it is worth in the market. The cited references do not provide a reliable universal method for deriving scarcity or price from a rarity mark, so compare the exact card version and use appropriate game- and market-specific evidence for those questions.

Does a rarity code tell you what you will pull from a pack?

No. A printed rarity label does not establish that a particular pack or box contains that card. The Japanese Pokémon guide discusses box-ratio projections but explicitly says those estimates are based on openings, may be inaccurate and are not official information. Do not treat a code, guide or estimated ratio as a guaranteed pull rate.

Update: Dragon Ball Super Divers launched after September 2024

Dragon Ball Super Divers is a later example, not part of the September 2024 snapshot: its official article says the first set debuted on November 7, 2024. For that first set, the article lists Normal (N), Rare (R), Super Rare (SR) and God Rare (GDR), plus an alternate-art God Rare marked GDR★. The official article notes that its text may be machine-translated. See the Dragon Ball Super Divers first-set announcement.
