The R-99 is a fast-firing light-ammo SMG built for close-range fights. To use it consistently, get close enough to track your target, control your bursts instead of reflexively emptying the magazine, and reload from cover. Its small base magazine makes every missed shot costly.
What the R-99 is good at
The R-99’s high fire rate lets it deliver damage quickly when you keep the reticle on an opponent. That makes it a close-range weapon: commit when you can reliably track the target, rather than expecting its theoretical damage output to make up for poor aim or a shot taken from too far away.
The Season 30 Marked profile on Apex Weapon Stats, dated September 16, 2026, lists 12 body damage, 15 head damage, 10 leg damage, and a calculated rate of 1,080 rounds per minute. These are reference values, not a guarantee of damage in a live match.

At 1,080 rounds per minute, the base 18-round magazine can be spent very quickly. Check your ammo before pushing, and plan a reload for cover or a lull—not while exposed and still trying to finish a fight.
How to practice R-99 recoil and tracking
1. Learn the feel with short bursts
In the game’s training area, fire short bursts at a stationary target. Concentrate on keeping the reticle steady through each burst. Focus on the weapon’s feel rather than memorizing one exact mouse or controller movement.

2. Track a moving target
Repeat the exercise while following a moving target. Keep the reticle on the target as it moves and changes direction. A recoil pattern you observe is not a guaranteed impact pattern: your shots still depend on aim and how well you track.
3. Lengthen bursts only when you can stay on target
Use controlled bursts while you are learning. At close range, fire longer bursts only when your tracking is reliable. If shots stop connecting, stop spraying, reset behind cover, and re-engage from a better position.

Use the R-99 with a plan in a match
- Close the distance first. Commit when the range and your aim give you a reasonable chance to keep shots on the opponent.
- Watch the magazine. With 18 rounds at base capacity, missed shots and sustained fire can leave you needing to reload before the fight is over.
- Use cover to reload. Break line of sight or wait for a lull instead of reloading in the open.
- Reset when aim breaks down. Reposition and try again when your aim or position is better; damage-per-second figures do not compensate for missed shots.
How to interpret the R-99’s damage and speed figures
Apex Weapon Stats calculates 216 idealized body damage per second and a 0.889-second time to kill against 200 health for its September 16, 2026 Season 30 Marked baseline. Those calculations assume ideal hits; the time-to-kill figure excludes accuracy, reloads, and server outcomes. Treat them as theoretical reference points, not a typical time to eliminate an opponent.
The R-99’s recoil and damage have also changed across patches, so older figures should not be presented as current. EA’s 2023 Resurrection patch notes said vertical recoil was slightly increased and recorded magazine reductions in that update. EA’s 2025 Takeover patch notes later recorded a damage decrease to 13 and increased recoil in that patch. The later September 2026 profile lists 12 damage to the body.

How to compare it with another close-range weapon
There is no same-date, same-method comparison here to establish that the R-99 is the best current SMG. When choosing between close-range weapons, compare how controllable each feels to you, its magazine capacity and damage per hit, and the distance at which you can reliably land shots. A weapon that you can keep on target may serve you better than one with stronger theoretical output that you regularly miss with.
