If Apex Legends crashes with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, fully restart your PC first. That is EA’s specific recommendation for this error. If it keeps happening, work through reversible checks—close background apps, update Windows and graphics drivers, confirm the game is using the right GPU, reset user overclocks, and repair the game files. The code does not prove your graphics card is failing or point to one certain cause.
What DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG means
EA’s Apex Legends error guide displays the label as “DXGI_ERROR_, DEVICE_HUNG” and describes it as a background app being stuck. Microsoft documents the contiguous API identifier, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG (0x887A0006), as an application-device failure involving badly formed commands: “The application’s device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This is a design-time issue that should be investigated and fixed.” These are two presentations of the same error, not different codes. Microsoft’s API definition does not diagnose the cause of an individual player’s crash; it does not establish whether Apex, a driver, background software, unstable settings, or hardware is responsible. How to troubleshoot the crash
Try the steps in order, testing Apex after each one. Start with actions that do not change system configuration; save more involved troubleshooting for a crash that persists.
-
Fully restart the PC
Choose a full system restart, then launch Apex again. This is EA’s error-specific first step for the

Close background apps
Exit other running applications and retry the game. EA’s graphics guidance notes that background applications can contribute to graphics problems. If closing apps does not help and the crash continues, EA’s general crash guidance also suggests a clean boot to disable background tasks that might interfere with a game. -
Check Windows and graphics drivers
Check for Windows updates and get graphics drivers from your GPU manufacturer. If you continue to suspect a driver problem, EA describes a clean driver installation or reinstall as troubleshooting options. There is no single driver version established here as the fix for every GPU and Apex build. EA graphics troubleshooting.

Check GPU selection and stability settings
If you play on a laptop, confirm Apex is using the intended discrete GPU rather than an integrated graphics adapter. If your PC is near the game’s minimum requirements, try lowering graphics settings. Return any user-applied GPU or CPU overclock to factory settings while testing; unstable settings can complicate graphics troubleshooting. EA graphics troubleshooting.

Try a frame-rate cap or V-Sync
EA lists limiting frame rate and enabling V-Sync among general steps for games that keep crashing or freezing. Treat them as troubleshooting options, not confirmed fixes for
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG. EA crash troubleshooting.
What not to assume or try first
- Do not assume the GPU is physically failing. The error alone does not establish a hardware fault, so it is not a reason by itself to buy a replacement graphics card.
- Do not rely on an old driver-version post as a current fix. Advice tied to a particular driver may not apply to your GPU, current drivers, or current game build.
- Do not treat DirectX runtime installation as a specific remedy. EA’s DirectX End-User Runtime article is general guidance for missing libraries needed by the EA app; it does not present runtime installation as a targeted fix for this Apex error. EA DirectX guidance.
- Avoid high-risk changes as first-line steps. Registry edits, forced driver rollbacks, and third-party cleanup utilities are not supported here as initial fixes for this code.
When to get more help
If the crash continues after these steps, EA directs players to its support resources and forums. If you are concerned that the PC has a hardware fault, EA’s graphics guidance recommends professional inspection. That is a conditional next step for suspected hardware trouble—not a diagnosis implied by the error itself. EA error-code guide; EA graphics troubleshooting.
