The ALGS Year 4 Split 1 North American regional final was postponed on March 18, 2024, after two players experienced apparent cheat effects during competition. Remote code execution (RCE) was widely discussed as a possible explanation, but the public evidence cited at the time did not establish that RCE was the attack method.
What happened during the ALGS NA final?
During the March 18 broadcast, DarkZero player Noyan “Genburten” Ozkose appeared to have a wallhack effect that revealed other players. TSM player Phillip “ImperialHal” Dosen later appeared to experience an aimbot effect. These were the visible incidents; they do not, on their own, establish how the effects were caused.
Apex Legends Esports announced the postponement on March 18, saying: “Due to the competitive integrity of this series being compromised, we have made the decision to postpone the NA finals at this time. We will share more information soon.” TechCrunch reported the statement and the incidents.
Was the tournament hack an RCE exploit?
That was a contemporaneous theory, not a confirmed technical finding. BleepingComputer reported that a person claiming responsibility said they had used an RCE vulnerability. The claim did not establish whether any alleged flaw was in Apex Legends, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), or other software, and the claim itself was unverified.

EAC said it had investigated reports of a potential RCE issue and was confident there was no RCE vulnerability within EAC being exploited. That is EAC’s assessment of its own software; it does not rule out every other possible vulnerability or compromise route.
Malwarebytes’ March 20 report, updated March 26, described an inbound connection attempt on an RDP port on ImperialHal’s machine. It also quoted security commentator PirateSoftware as saying he saw evidence of direct machine access, but not evidence of Apex RCE. These are a reported observation and an interpretation, not a definitive forensic account. The precise attack path remains unresolved in the cited reporting.

What did Respawn do?
Respawn said on March 20: “Game and player security are our highest priorities, which is why we paused the competition to address the issue immediately.” It also said: “Our teams have deployed the first of a layered series of updates to protect the Apex Legends player community and create a secure experience for everyone.” GameSpot reported the developer’s statement. The statement describes an initial step in a broader set of protections, rather than confirming the cause of the tournament incidents.
When was the final played, and who won?
Contemporary community and esports reports say the postponed final was played on March 25 without a public stream, and that TSM won. The sources cited here do not include an official ALGS results page for that specific final, so the result should be treated as reported rather than an official record. Why did the incident draw attention?
The tournament was part of the ALGS, which TechCrunch reported had a total prize pool of $5 million in its March 18, 2024 coverage. That figure is the series’ reported prize pool, not an estimate of losses caused by the incident. The postponement mattered because the visible effects raised immediate questions about whether the competition could continue fairly, while the technical explanation remained uncertain.
