No. You can play Apex Legends on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S without an Xbox Live Gold account. EA’s official Apex Legends FAQ answers the question directly: “No, you do not need an Xbox Live Gold account to play Apex Legends on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.”
You still need the free game, a persistent internet connection and an EA account. Those requirements are separate from an Xbox Live Gold subscription, so removing Gold does not turn Apex Legends into an offline game.

The short answer: Xbox Live Gold is not required
For the two Xbox console families named by EA—Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S—an Xbox Live Gold subscription is not a prerequisite for Apex Legends. The game is listed as free to play on those consoles. EA’s game-specific FAQ is the controlling source for this question, rather than a general description of online-console memberships.
That means a player can download and launch the free version of Apex Legends without buying Gold first. You do not need to keep a paid Xbox multiplayer membership active merely because the game’s matches take place online.

What you do need to play
| Requirement | Needed? | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Apex Legends | Yes | Install the free-to-play game on a supported Xbox console. |
| Persistent internet connection | Yes | EA lists an ongoing internet connection as a requirement. The game is built around online matches, so an offline-only setup is not sufficient. |
| EA account | Yes | EA lists an EA account as required. You may be asked to sign in or link the console session when you first start the game. |
| Xbox Live Gold | No | EA’s FAQ specifically says it is not required on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. |
| Xbox Game Pass subscription | Not for this requirement | EA’s separate Game Pass article discusses EA Play access, not a new requirement for the free Apex Legends game. |
EA’s free-to-play designation covers the game itself. It does not promise that every Xbox service, account or network feature is unnecessary. The two practical prerequisites EA names are internet access and an EA account.
How to start playing without Gold
- Use a supported console. The direct EA statement covers Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. If you are using another device, check that platform’s own account and network rules rather than assuming the Xbox answer applies.
- Connect the console to the internet. Because EA requires a persistent connection, use a working wired or Wi-Fi connection before opening the game. A connection that works only intermittently can prevent sign-in or interrupt a match.
- Find the free Apex Legends listing in the Xbox Store. Select the game’s free-to-play listing and begin the installation. Do not treat a request to buy Gold as part of the game’s listed requirement; EA says Gold is unnecessary for this title on the named consoles.
- Launch the game after installation. The first start can include updates, service checks and an account sign-in. Allow those online steps to complete instead of trying to start the game offline.
- Sign in to or create an EA account. EA lists the account as required. Use the account you intend to keep using, because progression and account links can become confusing if you switch identities.
- Enter the game. Once the console is online and the EA account is accepted, you can use the game’s online modes without purchasing Xbox Live Gold.
Why people still see “Xbox Live” in this question
“Xbox Live” is often used as shorthand for Xbox’s online subscription services, while EA’s FAQ uses the more specific term “Xbox Live Gold.” The important point is the game-specific requirement: EA explicitly says Gold is not needed for Apex Legends on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
A console may still display account, privacy, network or store messages containing Xbox terminology. Those messages do not automatically mean that Gold is required. Separate the message’s subject from the subscription question:

- A prompt about signing in concerns your console or EA account.
- A network warning concerns the internet connection EA lists as required.
- A store or membership prompt may relate to the route you used to open the game, not to the free-to-play game’s stated Gold requirement.
If a message specifically asks you to subscribe before continuing, note the exact screen and return to the free Apex Legends listing. EA’s FAQ is unambiguous about Gold for this game and these consoles.
Do not confuse Apex Legends with EA Play and Game Pass guidance
EA publishes separate guidance about how EA Play works with Xbox Game Pass. That article says that someone using EA Play on Xbox who wants to play online or multiplayer games also needs an Xbox Game Pass subscription. It describes the conditions attached to EA Play access; it is not a replacement for the Apex Legends-specific answer.
For this question, use the distinction below:
| Situation | What the EA guidance says |
|---|---|
| Playing the free Apex Legends game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Live Gold is not required, according to the game FAQ. |
| Using EA Play on Xbox and seeking online or multiplayer access through that membership | EA’s separate guidance says an Xbox Game Pass subscription is also needed. |
You therefore should not buy Game Pass merely because an EA Play explanation mentions it. First identify whether you are launching the free Apex Legends product or using an EA Play entitlement. The former is answered by the game FAQ; the latter is governed by EA Play’s separate terms.

What “free to play” does and does not mean
Free to play means EA does not require you to purchase the base game before downloading it. It does not mean that the game can run without a network connection. EA pairs the free-to-play description with two account and connectivity conditions: persistent internet access and an EA account.
Recommended Free Tools
Plan accordingly if you are setting up a child’s console, a travel system or a connection with a data limit. The relevant question is not “Have I bought Gold?” but “Can this console remain connected, and is the required EA account available?” A console that is completely offline cannot satisfy EA’s stated persistent-connection requirement.
Troubleshooting when access does not work
The game asks for a subscription
Confirm that you selected the free Apex Legends game listing rather than an EA Play route. EA’s FAQ says Gold is not required on the supported Xbox consoles. If the screen is still unclear, close the prompt, return to the game’s store page and verify the title before launching again.

The game will not sign in
Check the internet connection first, then check that you are using the intended EA account. EA lists both persistent internet access and an EA account as requirements, so a failure in either area can stop the initial sign-in even though Gold is not needed.
You can open the game but cannot stay in a match
An intermittent connection does not meet the practical needs of a game that EA describes as requiring persistent internet. Test the console’s connection, reduce competing network use and try again after the connection is stable. This is a connectivity issue, not evidence that Gold has become mandatory.

Which Xbox models are covered?
EA’s wording explicitly includes Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. That covers the Xbox One family and the two Series X|S consoles named in the FAQ. The answer is deliberately tied to those platforms; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every device on which an Apex-branded account might appear.
Subscription policies can change over time, and service labels can be updated. If you are reading this after an Xbox or EA policy change, verify the current game FAQ before paying for a membership. The latest game-specific statement is more relevant than an old forum post or a generic description of console multiplayer plans.
A practical decision checklist
- Have an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S? You are within the platform scope of EA’s direct answer.
- Installed the free Apex Legends game? The base game is listed as free to play on those Xbox consoles.
- Internet connected continuously? EA requires a persistent connection.
- EA account ready? EA lists one as required.
- Considering Gold only for Apex? EA says you do not need it.
- Seeing Game Pass language? Check whether the message concerns EA Play membership rather than the free game itself.
If all four practical setup items—supported console, installed game, persistent internet and EA account—are in place, the absence of Xbox Live Gold should not prevent you from playing Apex Legends on the consoles covered by EA’s FAQ.
