Apex Legends Season 20, Breakout, began on February 13, 2024, and ended on May 6, 2024. Its Legend Upgrade system let players earn EVO during a Battle Royale match to level up, improve their armor tier, and choose upgrades at Levels 2 and 3. Those choices reset between matches, and the system did not apply to Mixtape.

Breakout is a past season, so its announced rules are historical rather than a guide to the live game. EA’s season archive includes later seasons; check current game information before treating these mechanics as current.
How did the Legend Upgrade system work?
In Battle Royale, earning EVO advanced a Legend through levels during a match. Leveling improved the Legend’s armor tier and unlocked a choice of unique upgrades at Levels 2 and 3. Players selected upgrades in-game to shape that match’s build; the selections reset when the next match began. EA described the feature as a way to tailor a Legend to a playstyle and try different combinations from game to game.

How players earned EVO
EA’s Breakout announcement listed both combat actions and other squad activities as EVO sources:
- Damage, knocks, and knock assists
- Finishers and squad wipes
- Revives and respawns
- Class and world interactions
- EVO Caches and EVO Harvesters
Harvesters spawned randomly on Battle Royale maps. Activating one awarded EVO to the squad.

How were armor and Shield Cores connected to progression?
Breakout redesigned armor alongside EVO progression. Body Shields no longer appeared as ground loot in Battle Royale. Instead, each Legend had inherent Legend Armor, whose capacity increased as the Legend leveled up.
Shield Cores held current shield health and could be swapped or dropped. Defeated enemies left their cores in Death Boxes. EA also described a temporary overcharge effect when a player picked up a Shield Core of a higher level.

Did Legend Upgrades apply to Mixtape?
No. At Breakout’s launch, Mixtape had no Legend Upgrades and retained the older body-shield setup. The EVO-based leveling and redesigned armor system described above applied to Battle Royale.
