api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll errors usually appear when a program or game starts. The filename is a Windows API-set contract, so downloading a replacement DLL is rarely the correct fix.
Start with these checks
Before changing Windows files, record:
- The exact program or game that fails
- Whether the error appears at launch, after an update, or after moving the program to another PC
- Whether one application fails or several unrelated programs fail
- Your Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined anything
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll.”
- “api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The program named in the error matters. This is often the first dependency Windows reports, not the only broken dependency.

What this DLL name actually means
Microsoft describes API-set names as loader aliases. They identify a Windows API contract and can be resolved through the Windows API-set schema rather than pointing directly to a normal file on disk.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That means the exact filename may not appear in System32 or SysWOW64, even when Windows supports the relevant APIs. Do not treat it like a regular application DLL that should be registered, renamed, or copied from another computer.

Microsoft documents functions including GetProcAddress, FreeLibrary, GetModuleFileNameW, and LoadLibraryExW under this API set. The relevant API set is documented from Windows 10 build 10.0.10240, the original Windows 10 release.
The application that reports the error is the immediate affected program, but the underlying contract belongs to Windows. The correct repair therefore depends first on your Windows version.
Fix 1: Check Windows compatibility
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Continue with the repair steps below if you use Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Windows 7 or Windows 8.1
On Windows 7 or 8.1, this message commonly means the program was built for a newer Windows API surface. Copying a similarly named file cannot add missing Windows APIs.
Use one of these fixes:
- Upgrade to a supported Windows release.
- Install an older version of the affected program that explicitly supports your Windows version.
- Check the program developer’s system requirements before reinstalling it.
Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020. A newer game or application may therefore require Windows 10 or later even if an older release worked on Windows 7.
Do not attempt to make Windows 7 compatible by copying API-set files from Windows 10 or another PC. That can replace the original message with an entry-point error and leave the application unstable.
Fix 2: Repair Windows system components
Use this branch when multiple applications fail, Windows behaves abnormally, or the problem started after an interrupted update, disk issue, or system cleanup.
Recommended Free Tools
Install updates first
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately request it.
- Try the affected program again.
If the error remains, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- After it completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and launch the affected program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not download a DLL. Windows may need a matching installation source, and the source must closely match the installed Windows version. An in-place repair or System Restore may be more appropriate if component repair continues to fail.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application is the cause.
What success looks like
The repair worked if:
- The program starts normally.
- Other affected programs also launch.
- SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files.
- The same error does not return after restarting.
If only one application still fails, stop treating this as a general Windows repair and continue with the application steps.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely path when one game or program fails, especially after a patch or application update.
Use the program’s repair feature
Open the application’s launcher or installed-app settings and look for names such as:
- Scan and Repair
- Verify files
- Repair
- Check installation
- Troubleshoot
Run the repair and allow it to replace damaged or incomplete files. Restart Windows when it finishes, then launch the program again.

For Microsoft Store applications:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset, provided you understand that it may remove local application data.
For a traditional desktop program, use its own installer or launcher rather than copying a DLL into its installation folder.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair fails:
- Back up saves, profiles, templates, or other personal data.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the program developer or publisher’s official site.
- Install the correct Windows build.
- Launch the application once before restoring optional modifications or third-party add-ons.
A clean reinstall is especially important when the error began immediately after a game patch. The update may have been incomplete, may contain a packaging mistake, or may have raised the program’s Windows requirements.
Do not assume that reinstalling Windows files will repair an application’s private dependencies. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not every file installed inside a game or program directory.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed an application file after an update or scan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with the affected program.
If the application or installer is from a trustworthy publisher, confirm its provenance before restoring anything. Restoring a suspicious or unknown file is not a repair.
The safer approach is usually to reinstall the program from its official installer. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion merely to suppress the message. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again.
After reinstalling, run another scan and launch the program. If the file is quarantined again, investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 5: Check architecture and prerequisites
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can require different supporting files. Installing a 64-bit runtime does not replace a 32-bit runtime requirement.

Then install only the official prerequisite packages it requires.
Visual C++ Redistributable is relevant when the message names files such as:
api-ms-win-crt-*.dllvcruntime*.dllmsvcp*.dll
It is not a universal fix for every api-ms-win-* message, including this API-set contract. If the application genuinely requires Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, Microsoft provides separate packages for x86, x64, and ARM64 systems.
Do not mix files from System32, SysWOW64, another PC, or another Windows build. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Neither folder is a safe destination for a downloaded DLL.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers
A driver is not the normal source of this API-set error, but a failed Windows upgrade, graphics driver installation, or application update can expose several dependency problems at once.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category related to the failing program.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean graphics-driver repair, use the hardware manufacturer’s official installer and select its clean-install option when offered. Avoid driver bundles from unrelated download sites.

Manually checking hardware pages and comparing driver versions can be tedious, especially after a Windows reinstall. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates, while installation through the full version is optional; it is not required to repair this API-set contract.
What success looks like
The driver branch helped if the application launches after the restart and Device Manager no longer shows an error icon. If only this one application still fails, return to its launcher repair or reinstall it.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or program installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and programs without removing personal files. It will not repair every application installation, so reinstall the affected program if the error remains.
What not to do
- Do not download this filename from a random DLL website.
- Do not copy it into
System32,SysWOW64, or the application folder. - Do not rename
api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-1-0.dlltol1-2-0.dll. - Do not use
regsvr32on this API-set contract. It is not an ActiveX or COM component that requires self-registration. - Do not install a DLL from another PC or Windows build.
- Do not remove older Visual C++ Redistributable versions just because a newer one is installed.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or hide the real compatibility problem. There is also no single universal official file size, hash, or version that identifies a correct standalone download for this API-set name.

If the program still fails after Windows repair, antivirus checks, and a clean official reinstall, it may no longer support your Windows release or may have an unresolved packaging problem. The correct fix is then a supported application build or a supported Windows upgrade, not another copy of the DLL.
FAQ
Is api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-2-0.dll a real DLL?
It is a genuine Windows API-set contract name, but API-set names are loader aliases and may not exist as ordinary physical files.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Usually not. Visual C++ packages are relevant to Universal CRT and MSVC runtime filenames, not automatically to this Windows API-set contract.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. API-set contracts are not COM or ActiveX components and do not need registration.
Why does the error appear after a game update?
The update may have introduced a newer Windows requirement, left files incomplete, or exposed another missing dependency. Repair or reinstall the game, then check Windows compatibility.
Why does Windows 7 show this error?
The program may require a Windows 10 API surface that Windows 7 does not provide. Use an older compatible program release or upgrade Windows.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
No. API-set contracts are tied to Windows loader behavior and the operating-system build. Copying files between PCs can create architecture and entry-point errors.
What if several programs fail?
Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If those repairs fail, investigate broader corruption, disk problems, malware, or a damaged Windows profile rather than focusing on one filename.
