What api-ms-win-core-sysinfo-l1-2-0.dll is
Despite the .dll extension, this is not normally an ordinary application library. Microsoft API sets are loader contracts that allow an application to request a Windows function without depending directly on the internal implementation DLL. Windows routes that request to the correct system component. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows API sets.

The sysinfo portion refers to system-information functions, while l1-2-0 identifies an API-set contract revision. The file is associated with Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10-era system files. Public inventories show examples of Windows-specific versions, but there is no single universal version, size or hash that applies to every installation.

It is part of Windows, not the normal contents of:
- Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- A particular game
- A generic third-party runtime package
An application may still be the program that exposes the error or packages compatibility files alongside its installation. That does not make a copy from an application folder automatically genuine. On affected Windows installations, the file is commonly associated with C:WindowsSystem32; some Windows compatibility files use C:WindowsSystem32downlevel. Exact layouts vary by Windows version.
Check Windows compatibility first
If the computer runs Windows 7, this error may indicate that the application requires a newer Windows API contract. Copying the DLL into Windows 7 is not a supported compatibility fix. Upgrade Windows or install an older version of the application that explicitly supports the installed operating system.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, press Windows key + R, type:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemswinver
Press Enter and note the Windows version and build. Then install all pending updates:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Test the affected application again.
A newer application can also require a Windows build that the computer no longer supports. If the application publisher lists a minimum Windows version higher than yours, update Windows before attempting repeated DLL repairs.
Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first repair when several applications fail, Windows reports the file as missing from a system location, or the problem began after an interrupted update, cleanup operation or system change.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when it completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store and provides the repair source that SFC may need.
Run System File Checker
After restarting, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files appear intact. Repair the affected application next.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the files, continue to the recovery options below.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: Retry from Safe Mode, as Microsoft describes in its System File Checker guidance.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, it may require a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. Use installation media that matches the installed edition and build rather than an unrelated ISO.
Running these commands manually means watching several repair stages and repeating them without always knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying system problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM and SFC remain the official repair route.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows repair succeeds but one game or program still displays the error, the application is likely incompatible, incompletely installed or missing another dependency.
Use the application launcher
For a game or launcher-managed program:
- Open the launcher.
- Find the affected game or application in your library.
- Open its menu, settings or properties.
- Select Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Let the scan finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
The exact label varies by launcher. This process replaces damaged private files without requiring you to obtain a system DLL from an unknown source.
Use Windows application repair
For a supported Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or store listing. Back up saves, profiles and custom settings first. If the publisher provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers, choose the architecture supported by the application and its plugins.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined an application file after an update or reinstall.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand an entry to see its path, detection and action.
- Restore or allow a file only when its source, digital signature and parent application are trusted.
If the file came from an official application installation and the detection appears to be a false positive, reinstall the application instead of restoring an unexplained DLL. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. See Protection History in Windows Security.
A file found in a game or application folder is not automatically a Microsoft system file. Check the file’s Properties > Digital Signatures tab and identify which application owns the folder before taking action.

Fix 4: Check architecture and related dependencies
A 32-bit application requires 32-bit dependencies, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Windows normally keeps 64-bit system components in System32 and 32-bit components in SysWOW64, despite those names being counterintuitive. Do not copy files between these folders.
If the application also reports VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll or another Visual C++ runtime, install the correct Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from the official supported downloads page. Choose the architecture required by the application. Multiple Redistributable generations can coexist.
Visual C++ Redistributable installs C and C++ runtime libraries. It is not the normal source of api-ms-win-core-sysinfo-l1-2-0.dll, so installing it alone will not repair this Windows API-set contract unless the application has a separate C++ runtime problem.
Fix 5: Reinstall or update drivers only when the timeline supports it
A driver update can expose an existing Windows or application compatibility problem, but there is no universal driver known to cause this error. Consider this path only if the failure began immediately after a graphics, chipset or device-driver change.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or System devices.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver date and version.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began after that update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver, or download the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Avoid changing several drivers at once, because that makes the original cause harder to identify.
Manually checking hardware pages and matching dozens of driver versions is time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.

Fix 6: Use System Restore or repair reinstall
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a known update, driver installation or system change and the affected program worked previously.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if offered.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.
On Windows 11, persistent component corruption may justify Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now, where available. Microsoft says this reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files and settings. If that option is unavailable or fails, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair.
Why you should not download or register this DLL
Random DLL download pages cannot establish that a file matches your Windows build, architecture or loader layout. A replacement may contain malware, be damaged, belong to another Windows release, or simply leave the original missing dependency untouched.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not paste an isolated download into System32, SysWOW64 or a game folder unless the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to install a signed private component there. The safest sources are Windows Update, Windows repair tools, the application’s official installer and Microsoft’s official runtime packages.
regsvr32 is also inappropriate here. It registers conventional COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An API-set stub is not that type of component, so registering it will not repair the loader contract. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
FAQ
Is this file malware?
The filename identifies a legitimate Microsoft Windows API-set contract. A copy in an unexpected application folder still needs verification because malware can use a familiar name. Check the path, digital signature and antivirus history.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Not directly. Install the Redistributable only when the application also reports a C++ runtime dependency or its publisher requires it.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
The named file can be a symptom of another missing dependency, a damaged component store, an incompatible application or a loader failure. The exact message varies by Windows version and context.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows builds, architectures and API-set layouts differ. Use Windows Update, DISM and SFC instead.
What if all repairs succeed but one program still fails?
Repair or reinstall that program from its official source, verify its files and check its minimum Windows version. If it still fails, provide the publisher with the complete error, application version and Windows build.
