api-ms-win-mm-joystick-l1-1-0.dll is a genuine Windows API-set contract, not a normal third-party DLL. If an older application says it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first, then repair the application that reported the error.
Do not download this file from a random DLL website or copy an unknown version into the program folder. A replacement can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or hide the real problem.

What this file does
The filename follows Microsoft’s API-set naming convention. The contract is associated with legacy Multimedia Joystick functions such as joyGetPos, joyGetPosEx, and joyGetNumDevs.
Microsoft documents joyGetPosEx under Winmm.dll. Windows API-set contracts provide an abstraction that the loader maps to implementation files appropriate for that Windows release. Microsoft’s API metadata lists this contract alongside Winmm.dll and winmmbase.dll.

That means the application may request api-ms-win-mm-joystick-l1-1-0.dll, while Windows routes the API call through its own multimedia implementation. The error does not prove that the program included or owns a private copy of the file.
Historical Windows inventories identify it as an API-set stub in system directories, particularly on Windows 8 and 8.1. Do not assume that a particular file size, version, hash, or physical path applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Before repairing anything, identify the failure
Write down the following details:
- The exact error text
- The program or game that displays it
- Whether the message says “not found,” “missing,” “could not be loaded,” or “specified module could not be found”
- Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the issue began after an update, reinstall, antivirus action, cleanup, failed upgrade, or malware incident
A “specified module could not be found” message can mean that the named API-set file exists but another dependency is missing. It is therefore not enough to search only for the filename.

- Press Windows key + E.
- Open
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
api-ms-win-mm-joystick-l1-1-0.dll. - If you use 64-bit Windows, also check
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not copy, rename, delete, or replace anything you find.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. A 32-bit application uses the 32-bit system environment even when Windows itself is 64-bit. The correct location and loader mapping depend on Windows architecture, so a blind copy is unsafe.
1. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 minutes to over an hour, depending on Windows Update and disk speed.
This is the safest first repair when the file is genuinely absent, damaged, or reported by more than one application. DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks and repairs protected Windows files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected application again.
A successful result is a repaired component store or a message stating that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If the application now starts, no manual DLL replacement is needed.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found:
- Install all pending Windows updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM again.
- If it still fails, use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents the format as:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:Sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: only with the drive letter of a matching installation source. The source should closely match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not use an arbitrary ISO or an invented path.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for repair issues and show what needs attention, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC commands remain the direct repair path.
2. Repair the affected application
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes.
If only one old game or application reports the error and other programs work normally, its installation or compatibility is more likely to be involved.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu, if present.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every desktop program provides these controls. If the program has its own launcher, open it and look for Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. Let the launcher complete its process before testing again.
A successful repair restores the program’s required files and allows it to launch. If verification finds no problem but the error remains, install the latest official update or patch for that application.
Reinstall from the official source
- Back up saved games, settings, or project files.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s developer or publisher.
- Install it again.
- Right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator for the first test.
Do not place a downloaded copy of the API-set file beside the executable. A private DLL in the application directory can alter normal loader behavior and introduce version or security problems.
3. Check security software quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Antivirus interference is possible, particularly after an update or a false detection, but do not assume quarantine is the cause.

Windows Security
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or blocked items.
- If an item is identified as a genuine Microsoft-signed system file, confirm the file path and detection details before taking action.
- Restore it only when the system scan is clean and you are confident the detection is incorrect.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC if the file was removed.
If the item is unsigned, comes from an unexpected folder, or the security product identifies malware, do not restore it. Run a full scan and use Microsoft Defender Offline if malware is suspected.
4. Confirm architecture and application compatibility
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A 32-bit legacy program can fail on a 64-bit installation if its supporting files or installer are unsuitable. This does not mean you should copy a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL manually.
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Check System type.
- Check the application’s official documentation for supported Windows versions and architecture.
- Install the application’s current patch or compatibility update.
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try Run this program in compatibility mode for an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the program again.
If the program is very old, its launcher, installer, or other dependency may be incompatible with current Windows. Compatibility mode can help, but it cannot repair a damaged Windows component store.
5. Check drivers only when the symptom points to hardware
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A missing API-set contract is not normally recreated by installing a joystick driver. Update a driver when the application also reports that a controller is not detected, input is unavailable, or Device Manager shows a device fault.

- Expand Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected controller.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer the controller or computer manufacturer’s official driver when Windows does not find one. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are often suggested for older games, but none should be treated as the primary repair for this Windows API-set contract.
Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only if the same application also reports a missing runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Microsoft provides the current vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe packages through its official Visual C++ Redistributable page. A 32-bit application may need the x86 package on 64-bit Windows.
For a separate .NET or DirectX error:
- Read the exact missing component named in the message.
- Use the application’s official installer or Microsoft’s supported installer.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off only when the application specifically requires an optional Windows feature, such as an older .NET Framework component.
- Select the required feature.
- Choose OK and restart if prompted.
Installing a joystick driver or redistributable at random will not normally recreate a missing API-set contract.

7. Install Windows updates and investigate broader damage
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours.
A failed update can leave component-store problems behind.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
- Test the application.
If multiple applications begin reporting system DLL errors, suspect broader Windows corruption, malware, storage problems, or a damaged installation rather than one application’s files.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows:
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Back up important files.
- Consider a supported in-place Windows repair installation.
- Reserve a clean installation for cases where repair options fail.
An in-place repair is preferable to immediately replacing system files manually because it preserves a supported Windows component set.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 api-ms-win-mm-joystick-l1-1-0.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the COM self-registration entry point DllRegisterServer. Windows API-set stubs are loader contracts, not normally COM servers. Registration will not restore a protected Windows component and may produce another confusing error. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation and self-registration guidance.

FAQ
Is this an application-owned DLL?
No. The application triggers the load request, but the filename is a Microsoft Windows API-set contract associated with legacy multimedia joystick functions.
Should I search for it in System32 or SysWOW64?
You may check both directories, but do not assume that finding or copying a file there is the repair. Windows architecture and the calling program determine which system environment is used.
Do I need a joystick connected?
No. The contract belongs to joystick-related APIs, but a physical controller is not required for the application to load the Windows API.
Will Visual C++ fix this error?
Not normally. Install Visual C++ only when the application also identifies an MSVC runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.
