Apidya’ Special brings the 1992 Amiga shooter to Nintendo Switch with optional widescreen visuals, arranged music, local co-op and settings that let players adjust its punishing old-school rules. In Nintendo Insider’s review, Shaun Musgrave gives it 8/10, praising its presentation while warning that the challenge can feel unfair. ININ Games supplied the review copy.
What is Apidya’ Special?
Apidya began as a 1992 Amiga game published by Blue Byte and developed by Kaiko. Apidya’ Special revisits it as a horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up set in an insect world—a striking change from the space imagery common to the genre. Musgrave compares its design to familiar touchstones such as Gradius and R-Type. Nintendo Insider’s review

Musgrave describes a shooter where enemies drop power-ups, which the player selects from an upgrade bar, alongside a charged beam. Those mechanics give the game recognizable genre foundations, while its insect setting and themed worlds provide a distinctive look.
Is Apidya’ Special worth playing on Switch?
Musgrave’s verdict is 8/10. The reviewer praises the visuals and soundtrack, and values the ability to switch between classic and updated presentation. The caveat is difficulty: the game can become extremely demanding, and Musgrave says some of that challenge may feel unfair. That makes it a better fit for players who enjoy demanding retro shooters than for anyone expecting a consistently forgiving experience.

How difficult is Apidya’ Special?
The default rules preserve a sharp old-school penalty. When the player dies, they return to a checkpoint and lose upgrades, which can make getting back into a later section of a run especially tough, according to Musgrave.
Special’s options let players tune that experience rather than accept every original-style rule. The review says players can change checkpoint behavior and whether death removes power-ups, as well as adjust the number of lives and credits. These settings offer flexibility; they do not mean the underlying game has been made easy.

A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is listed as compatible, but it is optional and is not required for solo play. Nintendo Italy’s listing
