Windows may display one of these messages when a CONTPAQi component cannot load:

  • “The program can’t start because appkeyx.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
  • “There was a problem starting appkeyx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading appkeyx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because appkeyx.dll was not found.”
  • “appkeyx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The 60-second answer

appkeyx.dll is associated with CONTPAQi and Compac business software. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime file, DirectX file, or .NET component.

The safest first fix is to identify the CONTPAQi product named in the error and repair or reinstall that product from the official CONTPAQi installer. If the error involves licensing, also repair the common CONTPAQi license server and check its Windows service.

Do not download appkeyx.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer. The replacement may be malicious, built for a different product version, or the wrong architecture.

What appkeyx.dll belongs to

Public installation inventories associate AppKeyX.dll with several CONTPAQi products, including:

  • CONTPAQi Nóminas
  • CONTPAQi Contabilidad
  • CONTPAQi Comercial
  • Related products that use the shared CONTPAQi licensing system

It commonly appears beside AppKeyRT.dll inside a Compac product directory. Example locations include:

C:Program Files (x86)CompacNominasAppKeyX.dll
C:Program Files (x86)CompacCOMERCIALAppKeyX.dll
C:Program FilesCompacContabilidadAppKeyX.dll

These are examples, not universal locations. The exact folder depends on the installed product and release. Many older builds are 32-bit and therefore use Program Files (x86), but you should not assume every CONTPAQi release has the same architecture.

The file is connected with CONTPAQi licensing and authentication components, including an AuthServer service. Its exact internal function is not publicly documented, so treat it as part of the application’s licensing installation rather than as a general Windows library.

Why the error appeared

The most common causes are:

  1. A damaged or incomplete CONTPAQi installation
  2. A failed update, uninstall, or reinstall
  3. A missing or broken common license-server installation
  4. Antivirus quarantine
  5. A Windows service pointing to an old CONTPAQi directory
  6. A missing dependency, even though appkeyx.dll itself is present
  7. Files copied from another CONTPAQi computer or release
  8. Disk or Windows-component corruption

The phrase “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL is absent. Windows can show it when a dependency required by the DLL or the launching program is missing or incompatible.

Fix 1: Repair the affected CONTPAQi product

Start here if the problem began after an update, uninstall, system cleanup, or application failure.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for the CONTPAQi product named in the error.
  5. Select its three-dot menu, then choose Modify, Repair, or the available maintenance option.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Open the CONTPAQi application again.

If there is no repair option:

  1. Back up your company databases and configuration first.
  2. Download the matching installer from the official CONTPAQi portal or obtain it from an authorised distributor.
  3. Select the same product and release currently used by the workstation.
  4. Extract the downloaded package if necessary.
  5. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  6. Complete the installation.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not replace only one DLL unless CONTPAQi support gives you a verified file for the exact product build and destination. Reinstalling the application restores the related files and dependencies together.

If the product is not listed

The application may have been partially removed while leaving a service behind. Check these locations in File Explorer:

  • C:Program FilesCompac
  • C:Program Files (x86)Compac

Look for the product directory and its executable. Do not download a DLL to fill the folder manually. Use the official product installer instead.

Fix 2: Repair the common license server and AuthServer service

If CONTPAQi opens but cannot authenticate, or the error names AuthServer, licensing, or a server component, the shared license installation may be damaged.

CONTPAQi provides a separate common license-server package in its download catalogue. Sign in to the official CONTPAQi portal, select the appropriate product and release, and check whether the current common license-server installer is required.

After installing or repairing it:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for a CONTPAQi, Compac, AuthServer, or license-server service.
  5. Open its properties.
  6. Check the Path to executable.
  7. Confirm that the referenced folder still exists.
  8. If the path points to an old uninstalled directory, repair or reinstall the matching CONTPAQi component.
  9. Try starting the service.
  10. Restart Windows and test CONTPAQi.

A service may still reference a deleted directory after an upgrade. Do not edit the service command manually unless CONTPAQi support instructs you to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some older product-specific troubleshooting instructions mention reviewing the service’s Log On settings and the Interact with desktop option. That is not a universal Windows DLL fix. Change those settings only when directed by CONTPAQi support for your exact product and release.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or detection.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving appkeyx.dll or the CONTPAQi installation folder.
  5. Expand the detection and inspect the original path.

Restore the file only if you can confirm that it came from the genuine CONTPAQi installation and that the file is trusted. Reinstalling from the official installer is usually safer than restoring an isolated binary.

Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined items in its Protection history guidance. If the detection remains suspicious, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and contact CONTPAQi or your security vendor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency

If appkeyx.dll is visible in the correct product folder but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, the problem may be a dependency.

Check the following:

  1. Confirm that the failing application and AppKeyX.dll are in the same expected CONTPAQi installation.
  2. Do not copy a DLL from another product or computer.
  3. Check Event Viewer for a related application error:
  4. Right-click Start.
  5. Select Event Viewer.
  6. Open Windows Logs.
  7. Select Application.
  8. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  9. Note the failing executable, faulting module, and error code.
  10. Give those details to CONTPAQi support.

A 32-bit CONTPAQi application may require 32-bit dependencies even on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy a 32-bit file into C:WindowsSystem32, and do not assume that a DLL marked as 64-bit will work with the application.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use this step when other Windows applications also fail, Windows system files are damaged, or the issue began after a broader system problem. These commands normally cannot recreate a third-party CONTPAQi DLL, so they are secondary to repairing CONTPAQi.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test CONTPAQi again.

Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker instructions. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the commands after restarting and investigate the CONTPAQi installation separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its full-version repair is optional, and reinstalling CONTPAQi remains the definitive fix when this DLL belongs to that application.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when another error points to them

A display, storage, or security driver is not normally the cause of a missing CONTPAQi application DLL. Consider driver repair only if Device Manager shows a warning, Windows reports additional hardware errors, or the problem started with a driver change.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the reported device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties and review the Device status message.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when appropriate.
  8. Restart Windows.

Windows Features are also not a normal solution for appkeyx.dll. Do not enable random legacy components or install runtimes based only on a generic DLL-site recommendation. Install a runtime only when the CONTPAQi installer or an Event Viewer error identifies that dependency.

When several drivers are involved, hunting through hardware vendors and guessing which package is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it does not replace repairing the CONTPAQi product itself.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that appkeyx.dll is an ActiveX or COM registration DLL.

Running this command is therefore unlikely to help:

regsvr32 appkeyx.dll

It may produce an “entry point not found” error. Use the official CONTPAQi repair or installation process instead.

Try System Restore only after a known change

If CONTPAQi worked until a recent installation, update, or system change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the failure.
  3. Review the affected programs.
  4. Start the restore if the listed changes are acceptable.
  5. Restart Windows and test CONTPAQi.

Microsoft explains System Restore in its official support guide. It normally rolls back system settings and installed programs without removing personal files, but it is not a substitute for backing up business data.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

A standalone download can have the wrong:

  • CONTPAQi product association
  • Release or build
  • 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Dependencies
  • Digital trust status

It may also leave the AuthServer service broken even if the file is placed in the expected folder. Never copy appkeyx.dll into System32, use a registry cleaner, or replace it with a file from another PC.

Use the official CONTPAQi portal, the installer supplied by your authorised distributor, or a verified support package for your exact product and release.

FAQ

Is appkeyx.dll part of Windows?

No. It is associated with CONTPAQi and Compac software, not standard Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which application should I reinstall?

Reinstall the CONTPAQi product named in the error or the product whose executable fails. If the message concerns authentication or licensing, repair the common license server as well.

Can I copy the file from another computer?

No. Another computer may have a different CONTPAQi release, architecture, or licensing configuration.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?

A required dependency may be missing or incompatible. Check Event Viewer and repair the matching CONTPAQi installation.

Should I run regsvr32?

Usually not. It is not a general DLL repair command, and appkeyx.dll has not been shown to require COM registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact CONTPAQi support?

Escalate when repair does not restore the application, the AuthServer service will not start, the service path is wrong, or the error returns after reinstalling. Provide the exact message, affected product and release, service executable path, Event Viewer details, and antivirus detection information.
