Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteaswbrowser.dll is an Avast browser component, not a Windows system DLL. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Avast Secure Browser or Avast security product that originally installed it, rather than downloading a replacement file.
What aswbrowser.dll is
The file is associated with the older Avast SafeZone Browser library. Avast later developed and distributed that browser under the Avast Secure Browser name.
A genuine copy is normally kept inside the Avast product’s own installation directory. It should not normally be copied to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Windows does not provide this DLL as part of the operating system, Microsoft .NET, DirectX, a driver package, or the Visual C++ Redistributable.
The file may be involved in messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because aswbrowser.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading aswbrowser.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because aswbrowser.dll was not found.”
- “aswbrowser.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that the DLL exists but one of its dependencies is missing. That is why replacing one file rarely provides a reliable repair.

Fix 1: Repair the Avast installation
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Repair is the best first step if you still use Avast Secure Browser or Avast Antivirus.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find Avast Secure Browser.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall or Modify, depending on the options shown.
- When the Avast maintenance window opens, choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
The maintenance window may appear after choosing Uninstall. That does not necessarily mean you must remove the browser; it can provide Avast’s repair option.
Test the browser or the program that produced the message after Windows restarts. If the error no longer appears, the installation was damaged or incomplete.
If you do not see Avast Secure Browser, repeat the same process for Avast Antivirus or another Avast product listed in Installed apps. The exact component producing the popup depends on which Avast installation remains on the computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf repair fails, move to the clean reinstall below. Do not search for the missing DLL first.
Fix 2: Reinstall Avast Secure Browser or the owning Avast product
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A reinstall replaces the complete set of related files and dependencies. It also avoids mixing a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit application, or the reverse.
- Save open work and restart Windows once.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Locate Avast Secure Browser.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the Avast removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Secure Browser installer from Avast’s official support site.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation and restart if prompted.
If the error appeared when Avast Antivirus itself started, repair or reinstall Avast Antivirus, not only Secure Browser.

If normal removal fails, use Avast’s official Secure Browser uninstall utility. Download it only from Avast, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and follow its removal prompts. Restart before installing the current Avast product again.

The reinstall worked if the application opens without the DLL message and no new Avast startup error appears after another reboot.
Fix 3: Check Avast Quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Avast Antivirus may have quarantined the file after a detection or false positive. Check this before manually restoring anything.
- Open Avast Antivirus.
- Select Protection.
- Open Quarantine.
- Look for
aswbrowser.dllor an Avast browser-related entry. - Select the entry and open More options (…).
- Choose Restore only if the file belongs to the Avast installation you trust and the installation has not been tampered with.
Avast also offers Restore and add exception. Do not use that option automatically. Restoring a malicious or altered file and excluding it from future scans creates a security risk.
If Avast repeatedly quarantines the file, leave it in quarantine, run a full scan, and submit the detection to Avast for analysis. The safer long-term solution is usually to uninstall and reinstall the affected Avast product from its official installer.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If you removed Avast but the popup returns at every reboot, Windows may still be launching an obsolete browser or SafeZone entry.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries mentioning Avast, SafeZone, or Secure Browser.
- Right-click an entry that points to a program you already removed.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also check scheduled tasks:
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open it as administrator.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for clearly obsolete Avast or SafeZone tasks.
- Check the task’s Actions tab before changing anything.
- Disable or remove a task only when it points to an uninstalled Avast component.
If you still use Avast, do not disable active protection or update tasks merely because their names contain Avast. Repair the current installation instead.

If removing the stale entry stops the popup, the DLL was not needed by Windows. It was being requested by leftover startup configuration.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
aswbrowser.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader problems, such as damaged system apps, failed updates, or multiple unrelated errors.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents these commands in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired, or that no integrity violations were found. These commands do not replace the Avast DLL. If the popup remains, repair or reinstall the Avast product.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is a poor substitute for repairing the application that owns the file. Outbyte PC Repair can show what Windows problems its free scan detects, while repair actions are performed by the full version; reinstalling Avast remains the definitive fix when its private DLL is missing.
Fix 6: Install Visual C++ only for a separate runtime error
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Do not install Visual C++ merely because aswbrowser.dll is missing. The Visual C++ Redistributable does not contain this Avast DLL.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when another error identifies them
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Drivers, DirectX, and .NET are not established causes of a missing aswbrowser.dll. Do not update all three at random.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check drivers only if the application reports a separate graphics, audio, storage, or device error:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a damaged driver, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the computer or device manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies as outdated, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is not a replacement for reinstalling Avast when aswbrowser.dll belongs to Avast.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft describes it as a DLL registration command in its regsvr32 documentation.
There is no verified indication that aswbrowser.dll is an ActiveX or COM server requiring registration. Running this command is therefore unlikely to repair the problem:
regsvr32 aswbrowser.dll
It may instead produce an entry-point error. Do not register the file unless Avast’s own documentation specifically instructs you to do so.

Common causes and the matching repair
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Damaged Avast or Secure Browser installation | Repair, then reinstall if necessary |
| Failed update or partial uninstall | Restart, repair, or use Avast’s uninstall utility |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Quarantine and restore only a verified clean file |
| Avast was removed but startup data remains | Disable the obsolete startup app or scheduled task |
| Malware or altered files | Run a full security scan and reinstall Avast |
| Wrong architecture or incompatible DLL | Reinstall the owning product instead of mixing files |
| Missing Microsoft runtime | Install Visual C++ only when that runtime is named |
| Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
If the file appears outside an Avast installation directory, do not assume it is genuine. Check its digital signature and scan it with trusted security software. A matching filename alone does not prove authenticity.
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incompatible build, an incorrect architecture, or a file that does not match the other Avast components. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create additional loader problems and does not repair the underlying installation.
Use Avast’s official installer, repair process, or uninstall utility. Restore from a verified backup or System Restore only when the Avast installation and file were known to be present before the problem.
FAQ
Is aswbrowser.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Avast SafeZone Browser and later Avast Secure Browser components. It should not normally be stored in a Windows system folder.
Which program installed it?
An older Avast SafeZone Browser installation or an Avast product bundle may have installed it. Current Avast branding generally refers to the browser as Avast Secure Browser. The exact program requesting it depends on what remains installed.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Avast release, architecture, or dependency set. Reinstall the complete owning product instead.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if I no longer want Avast Secure Browser?
Uninstall Avast Secure Browser and remove any obsolete Avast or SafeZone startup entry. Do not restore the DLL just to satisfy a leftover launcher.
Why does the message appear after every reboot?
A remaining Avast startup item or scheduled task may be calling a removed file. Inspect Startup apps and Task Scheduler after confirming that you no longer need the related Avast component.
Will Windows Features fix this?
Usually not. Do not enable random Windows Features for this error. Only change a feature when another application explicitly identifies it as missing.
Is System Restore appropriate?
Only as a last resort, and only if a restore point exists from before the Avast file disappeared. Reinstalling the related Avast product is normally safer and more targeted.
