The Siri Remote works with games that support it. Other titles require a controller, and the App Store identifies those games with a “Game Controller Required” badge. Apple TV 4K supports up to four connected game controllers at once, plus one Siri Remote.
For the broadest compatibility, use a supported Bluetooth gamepad such as a Sony DualSense or DualShock 4, an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, an Xbox Adaptive Controller, or an MFi-compatible controller. Compatibility is decided per game and can also vary by Apple TV hardware, tvOS version, country or region, and the game’s own listing.

How Apple Arcade works on Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K provides two ways to reach the Apple Arcade catalog: open the dedicated Arcade app, or open the App Store and select its Arcade tab. From there, you can browse categories and popularity lists, search for a specific title, open its product page, and download it to the Apple TV.
Apple Arcade games are included with an active Apple Arcade subscription. You do not make additional purchases inside an included game to access its Apple Arcade content. If the subscription is inactive, downloading or playing the title through Apple Arcade is no longer available.

“Included” does not mean every title is available on every Apple device. Apple says availability across devices depends on hardware and software compatibility. Features and content can also differ by country or region and by Apple TV hardware model, so a game visible on another Apple device may not appear, download, or expose identical features on your Apple TV 4K.
Do you need a controller for Apple Arcade?
When the Siri Remote is enough
The Siri Remote is sufficient for games that explicitly support it. Apple’s tvOS guidance requires games to support either the Siri Remote or an MFi game controller, so a title that supports the remote can be played without buying another accessory.
Remote-friendly games are generally the simplest option for short sessions, menus, turn-based play, or designs built around directional and touch-style input. The decisive test is not the genre or the game’s name; it is the input information on that game’s Apple TV listing.

When a separate controller is mandatory
Some Apple TV 4K games require a controller. Apple’s support documentation states that some games on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD require one, and the App Store marks those titles with a “Game Controller Required” badge. If that badge appears, the Siri Remote alone will not satisfy the game’s input requirement.
A controller icon on a listing indicates controller support for that Apple device. Treat the icon and the required badge as separate checks: the icon tells you that a controller is supported, while the required badge tells you that one is mandatory. A game can support a controller while still allowing the Siri Remote, or it can require the controller for every player.
Which controllers work with Apple TV 4K?
Apple lists the following controller families for Apple TV 4K:
| Controller | What the listing establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sony DualShock 4 | Listed by Apple as a supported controller. | Check that the individual game supports a controller on Apple TV and inspect any required-input badge. |
| Sony DualSense | Listed by Apple as a supported controller, making it the relevant PS5-family option. | Confirm the title’s Apple TV availability and controller requirements before downloading. |
| Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth | Apple specifically lists the Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller. | Do not assume every Xbox-branded pad is covered; verify that your model has Bluetooth and that the game supports it. |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Listed by Apple as supported. | Game-level support still controls whether it can be used in a particular title. |
| Xbox Adaptive Controller | Listed by Apple as supported. | Check the title listing and configure controls for the game’s requirements. |
| MFi-compatible game controller | Apple supports controllers made for its MFi game-controller standard. | Confirm compatibility with your Apple TV hardware and the specific game. |
These are platform-level compatibility statements, not a promise that every listed controller works identically in every game. The game’s Apple TV listing remains the authoritative check for that title.

How to check a game before downloading
Use the following sequence whenever you are unsure whether a title will work with the Siri Remote, a controller, or your particular Apple TV 4K.
- Open Arcade or the App Store’s Arcade tab. Browse by category or popularity, or search for the game by name.
- Open the game’s listing. Do not rely only on screenshots, a trailer, or the fact that the game runs on another Apple device.
- Look for the controller icon. This indicates controller support for the Apple device shown in the listing.
- Look for “Game Controller Required.” If that badge appears, plan to use a compatible gamepad; the Siri Remote will not be enough.
- Check Apple TV and tvOS compatibility. Apple says availability varies with hardware and software compatibility, so a title may not be offered on every Apple TV model or software version.
- Check multiplayer information. If you want local multiplayer, confirm that the title supports the number of players and controllers you intend to use.
- Download only after these checks. An active Apple Arcade subscription is required, although included games do not require additional purchases inside the subscription.
This process answers three different questions that are often confused: whether the title is available on Apple TV, whether it accepts a game controller, and whether it requires one. Checking the listing before downloading avoids buying a controller for a game that is unavailable on your model or discovering that a remote-only setup cannot launch a required-controller title.
What “game support” means on Apple TV
Input support
Input support falls into three practical categories: Siri Remote support, optional controller support, and controller-required play. A controller icon alone does not tell you that the remote is unsupported, and the absence of a required badge does not guarantee that every game mechanic feels comfortable on the remote.
Device support
Apple TV availability is title-specific. Apple’s Arcade overview warns that hardware and software compatibility affect which games can be used across devices. Hardware model, installed tvOS software, and regional catalog rules can therefore change the result even when two people both describe their device as an “Apple TV 4K.”
Multiplayer support
The Apple TV can have up to four game controllers connected at one time, plus one Siri Remote. That is the platform connection limit, not a guarantee that every game offers four-player modes. A title may support fewer players, require a specific input method, or use controllers differently for local multiplayer.
Connecting and managing controllers
Pair a supported controller first
Use a controller from Apple’s supported list and pair it with Apple TV through the device’s Bluetooth controls. Once the controller is connected, open the game and test its input. If a title displays a required-controller badge, pair the controller before launching that game rather than expecting the Siri Remote to substitute for it.
Create profiles and customize controls
Apple TV supports controller profiles, control remapping, and control customization by app. These options are useful when more than one person uses the Apple TV, when a game’s default layout is uncomfortable, or when an accessibility setup needs a different arrangement. Customization is applied with the game or app context in mind, so changes intended for one title should be checked in the title where they matter.

Use Buddy Controller for shared play
Buddy Controller combines two compatible controllers so they operate as one player. This can let two people share control of a single character or help a player who benefits from a second set of hands. It does not turn two controllers into two independent players, and it does not raise the Apple TV’s four-controller connection limit.
Apple TV 4K multiplayer limits
The maximum documented connection is four game controllers plus one Siri Remote at the same time. The Siri Remote is an additional input device; it does not consume one of the four game-controller connections.
That limit should be read together with the game’s own multiplayer design. Connecting four pads cannot force a two-player title to become a four-player title. Conversely, a game that supports several local players may still require every participant to use a compatible controller rather than allowing a mixture of remotes and gamepads. Check the individual listing and in-game instructions for the player count.
Buddy Controller is a special case: two controllers are presented to the game as one player. It is therefore useful for cooperation or accessibility, but it does not provide an extra player slot.
Important limitations and regional differences
The catalog is not universal
Apple Arcade availability can differ by country or region. A game’s listing, release status, included content, or feature set may not match what another user sees elsewhere. Avoid treating a friend’s catalog or a listing on another device as proof that the title is available on your Apple TV 4K.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHardware and software affect availability
Apple states that hardware and software compatibility determine availability across devices. Keep the Apple TV’s software current enough for the title when possible, but understand that an update cannot make an unsupported game or hardware model universally compatible.
Controller behavior is title-specific
A supported controller can still behave differently from game to game. One title may expose every button, another may use only a subset, and another may require a controller while offering no meaningful Siri Remote fallback. The listing’s controller indicators answer the platform question; the game’s developer controls the detailed rules and layout.
Subscription access is required
Apple Arcade’s no-extra-purchase model applies while the subscription is active. It does not convert the games into permanent purchases. If you cancel or otherwise lose access to the subscription, the Apple Arcade entitlement is affected even if the game remains installed.
Choosing a setup for your play style
You mostly play remote-compatible games
Start with the Siri Remote and check each listing for remote support. This is the lowest-equipment approach, but it leaves you unable to play titles marked “Game Controller Required.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou want the widest game coverage
Add one supported Bluetooth controller. A DualSense, DualShock 4, Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller, or MFi-compatible controller covers the platform-level options Apple documents. You still need to check each game because no controller guarantees access to every Apple TV title.
You plan local multiplayer
Count the controllers required by the specific game, then stay within Apple TV’s limit of four game controllers plus one Siri Remote. If two people need to cooperate as one player, consider Buddy Controller instead of treating those two pads as separate player slots.
You are deciding between PS5 and Xbox hardware
A DualSense is Apple-listed and is the relevant PS5-family choice. An Xbox Wireless Controller is supported when it is the Bluetooth-capable version; the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is also listed. In either case, verify the game listing before assuming the title supports the controller or offers the multiplayer mode you want.
Troubleshooting Apple Arcade controller problems
- The game says a controller is required. Pair an Apple-listed controller. The Siri Remote cannot replace a mandatory gamepad.
- The controller is not recognized. Confirm that it is one of Apple’s supported models, that the Xbox controller has Bluetooth when applicable, and that it is paired through Apple TV’s Bluetooth controls.
- The game is missing from Arcade. Check Apple TV hardware and tvOS compatibility, then consider country or region availability. Apple’s catalog is not identical across all devices and regions.
- Only some buttons work. Review the game’s own control instructions and Apple TV’s per-app customization or remapping options. Platform compatibility does not guarantee an identical layout in every title.
- Four controllers will not create four players. The Apple TV connection maximum is four game controllers, but the game sets its own player limit.
- You need two people to control one character. Enable Buddy Controller with two compatible controllers so they act as one player.
- The controls or rules remain unclear. Apple directs users to contact the app’s developer for questions specific to that game.
The practical answer
Apple TV 4K is a viable Apple Arcade device with two input paths: the Siri Remote for compatible games and a separate controller for titles that support or require one. Before downloading, inspect the game’s Apple TV listing for the controller icon, the “Game Controller Required” badge, device compatibility, and multiplayer information. For the broadest coverage, pair one of Apple’s listed Bluetooth or MFi-compatible controllers; for group play, remember the four-controller limit and use Buddy Controller when two controllers need to function as one player.
