Apple’s March 8, 2024 decision restored Epic Games Sweden AB’s Apple Developer Program account, reopening Epic’s path to bring its own marketplace and Fortnite to iPhones in the European Union. It did not put Fortnite back in Apple’s App Store, make the game instantly downloadable, or enable unrestricted iPhone sideloading worldwide. Fortnite reached iOS in the EU through the Epic Games Store on August 16, 2024; its later return to the U.S. App Store was a separate event in May 2025.
What Apple reinstated in March 2024
Apple restored the developer account held by Epic Games Sweden AB. Epic had created the account to support its planned Epic Games Store marketplace and Fortnite distribution in Europe under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). An account restoration gave Epic a route to develop and distribute software under Apple’s EU rules; it was not an approval of Fortnite for Apple’s own App Store.
Epic said Apple first approved the account and then terminated it on March 6, 2024. On March 8, Apple committed to restore it after regulatory scrutiny from the European Commission. Epic’s account of the events and its stated plans are in Epic’s announcement.
Why the European Commission mattered
The DMA requires Apple to allow certain forms of app distribution beyond its ordinary App Store channel for users in the EU. The European Commission indicated it would investigate Apple’s handling of Epic’s account, and Epic said Apple had committed to the Commission to restore it. Contemporary AP coverage described the regulatory pressure, but the episode should not be mistaken for a final Commission finding that Apple violated the DMA over this account: AP’s report on the reversal.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Apple’s framework is specific to eligible distribution in the EU. It covers alternative app marketplaces and, subject to Apple’s requirements, distribution from an authorized developer’s website. Apple describes the process, including user consent, developer authorization and notarization, in its DMA and apps in the EU documentation and DMA legal information. These rules did not make the Epic Games Store available to U.S. iPhone users in March 2024.
Why Apple terminated the account—and what each side said
Epic characterized the termination as retaliation and a violation of the DMA. Apple’s reported position was that Epic could not be trusted, citing its past conduct and breach of its agreement with Apple, as well as public criticism of Apple by Epic CEO Tim Sweeney. Contemporary reporting by Ars Technica described Apple’s concerns and its reversal.
Those are competing accounts, not a settled finding that the termination happened solely because of Sweeney’s statements. Epic’s allegations are best understood as Epic’s position; Apple’s stated concerns should likewise be attributed to Apple.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What “sideloading Fortnite” meant
“Sideloading” is a broad consumer term for installing software outside a platform’s default store. It does not identify a single iOS installation method, and it does not mean every iPhone can freely install any app from anywhere.
- Apple App Store: Apple’s usual marketplace and the channel involved when an app is listed there.
- Alternative marketplace: A separate app store, such as the Epic Games Store, distributed under Apple’s EU framework.
- Web Distribution: An authorized developer’s direct distribution from its website under Apple’s EU rules.
In the March 2024 announcement, the expected route for Epic was its own alternative marketplace—not an unrestricted Fortnite download or a freely installable IPA for iPhones around the world. Apple’s EU framework includes notarization and other security requirements; notarization is not the same as the full App Store review process. The details are in Apple’s EU distribution documentation.
When Fortnite actually returned to iOS
The March 8 account reinstatement did not make Fortnite immediately playable on iPhone. Epic still needed to build and launch its marketplace and prepare the game for distribution. Fortnite returned to iOS in the EU on August 16, 2024, through the Epic Games Store rather than Apple’s App Store. At launch, Epic said native Fortnite required iOS 17.6 or later. Its EU return announcement gives the launch details.

What changed after the 2024 announcement
The original news was limited to Epic’s EU distribution plans, but Fortnite’s iOS availability later broadened. The game returned to Apple’s App Store in the United States in May 2025, as reported by AP. That was not a consequence that had already happened when Apple reinstated Epic’s developer account in March 2024.
Epic’s current support information lists Fortnite through the Apple App Store on iPhone and iPad except in Australia; through the Epic Games Store in the EU, Japan and Brazil; and through AltStore PAL in the EU. Regions and device eligibility can vary by distribution route, so check Epic’s live iOS installation and availability guidance and its Fortnite iOS page for current options.

Epic Games Store
Epic’s iOS/iPadOS store is region-limited. Its support material lists the EU and Japan, and notes that device availability differs between iPhone and iPad. Epic currently says the store requires iOS or iPadOS 18.6 or later. Follow its installation instructions for the applicable device and region; the flow includes confirming installation with a double-press of the side button. Requirements and availability can change.
There is also a travel limitation for this route: Epic says that outside the EU, already installed Epic Games Store apps can continue to work and receive updates for up to 30 days. After that, updates stop, though apps may still open; new apps cannot be installed from the store while outside its supported region. See Epic’s region and travel guidance.
AltStore PAL
Epic’s support information lists AltStore PAL as another Fortnite distribution route in the EU. Use the marketplace’s official process and verify current regional eligibility; it is not a worldwide iPhone installation method.

Unofficial installers
Epic says it does not officially support third-party software for installing Fortnite on iOS. Avoid services promising universal installation through unofficial IPA files or signing tools: Epic does not endorse that route, and it can create security, account, compatibility and update risks. Its support warning is the relevant guidance.
How the episode fits the longer dispute
The March 2024 reversal was one development in an ongoing Epic–Apple conflict over app distribution and payments, not a resolution of every dispute. The earlier confrontation began in August 2020, when Epic introduced a direct-payment option in Fortnite that bypassed Apple’s required in-app purchase system; Apple removed Fortnite and terminated Epic’s account. The later reinstatement of Epic Games Sweden AB’s account concerned a distinct EU distribution route, while Fortnite’s U.S. App Store return came years later.
