What an ME storage system actually does
Applied Energistics 2 (AE2) separates item storage from the block that exposes that storage. Storage Cells hold the item data; an ME Drive or ME Chest holds those cells and makes their contents available to the network. A terminal is the searchable interface used to insert and retrieve items.

This is different from placing a larger chest in the world. The items are recorded in Storage Cells, while the terminal gives you one inventory-like view of every cell connected to the network. You can later add buses to use ordinary chests, drawers, machines, or other inventories without moving everything into cells.

The official player guide cited for this setup is written for AE2 on Minecraft 1.20.4. Recipe names, supported Minecraft versions, and interface details can change between AE2 releases, so use the guide and recipe viewer that match your modpack rather than assuming a recipe from another version.
What you need for a first network
- One ME Drive or ME Chest. The drive is the better long-term foundation; the chest is a simple way to begin with a small number of cells.
- Storage Cells. The official guide recommends 4k cells as a practical starting balance between capacity and the number of different item types a cell can hold. The exact number is up to your available materials and storage goals.
- An energy connection. Connect the AE2 network to a compatible powered network through an Energy Acceptor or another supported powered connection.
- ME Cable. Cable links the storage block, terminal, power connection, and later devices into one network.
- A terminal. This is the practical search, insert, and retrieve interface. Without one, the network may be powered and storing items but is not convenient to use.
- A suitable place to build. Keep the first network compact. Short cable runs make channels, power behavior, and troubleshooting much easier to understand.
A universal material cost for these parts is not established. Costs vary with AE2 release, recipe changes, and the surrounding modpack, so use the in-game recipe viewer for the exact pack you are playing.
Build your first ME storage system
- Choose the storage block. Place an ME Chest if you want the simplest possible starter or an ME Drive if you expect to add more cells and devices. Leave room around it for cable and a terminal.
- Insert the Storage Cells. Open the ME Drive or ME Chest and place your 4k cells in its cell slots. The cells, not the drive or chest itself, contain the stored items.
- Connect power. Attach an Energy Acceptor or another compatible powered-network connection, then connect that device to your power infrastructure. The network must have energy before terminals and storage functions can operate.
- Run ME Cable. Connect the storage block to the power connection and leave a cable segment where the terminal will attach. Keep this first branch short and easy to see.
- Attach the terminal. Place the terminal on the cable or another valid network face according to the block’s connection rules. Open it and check that the interface recognizes the network.
- Insert a test item. Put one or a few items into the terminal’s input area. Search for that item immediately afterward. It should appear in the network list and be available to retrieve.
- Test retrieval. Take the item back out, then insert it again. This confirms both directions of the terminal connection instead of merely proving that the interface opens.
- Add cells gradually. If the first test works, add more cells and organize the cable before attaching additional machines, buses, or terminals. A compact working network gives you a known-good baseline for later expansion.
If the terminal is blank, do not assume the items vanished. Check power first, then confirm that the cable physically connects the terminal to the drive or chest and that the cells are inserted into the storage block rather than left in a player inventory.
ME Chest versus ME Drive
| Starter layout | Best use | Cells and capacity | Channels and expansion | External inventories | Power buffering |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ME Chest | A very small first system with minimal setup | Uses Storage Cells installed in the chest; the exact practical count depends on the block and version | Compact networks can remain within the default eight-channel allowance; expansion details depend on the rest of the network | Can share a network with Storage Buses, Import Buses, and Export Buses | Uses the network’s available energy buffer; a separate Energy Cell can be added later |
| ME Drive | A storage foundation intended to grow | Holds multiple Storage Cells; the exact slot count and recipe should be checked in the current modpack | Provides a clearer path to more cells, terminals, and automation, subject to channel planning | Can share a network with Storage Buses, Import Buses, and Export Buses | Uses the network’s available energy buffer; add Energy Cells when transfer bursts require more reserve |
| Storage Bus hybrid | Keeping existing chests or specialized inventories accessible through the terminal | Uses the attached inventory’s own capacity in addition to any cells in the network | Each added device must fit within the available channel plan; the cited documentation does not state a single universal channel total for every bus arrangement | Directly exposes an attached inventory as network storage | All attached devices share the network’s finite energy buffer |
The ME Chest is easier to understand because there are fewer physical parts. The ME Drive is the more flexible starting point when you already know that you will add cells, buses, autocrafting equipment, or several terminals. Neither choice changes the fundamental rule: Storage Cells hold the items, while the storage block makes those cells visible to the network.
Storage Cells, drives, chests, and terminals explained
Storage Cells are the actual storage
A cell is a removable storage medium. It must be placed in an ME Chest or ME Drive before its contents become part of the searchable network. Moving a cell to another compatible storage block moves the data with it; the terminal is only the interface through which you access that data.

Starting with 4k cells avoids committing all your early resources to the largest possible cell while still giving a useful mix of capacity and item types. Add cells as your inventory grows instead of filling every slot before the network has a stable power and cable layout.
The ME Drive is a cell rack
An ME Drive is designed for a growing bank of cells. It keeps the removable cells in one recognizable block and makes expansion easier to plan. If a cell does not appear in the terminal, open the drive and verify that it is seated in a cell slot and that the drive is connected to the powered network.
The ME Chest is a compact cell host
An ME Chest is useful when you want a minimal first build or a small local network. It still requires power, cable, and a terminal for the normal searchable-storage experience. Choosing a chest does not eliminate channel or energy rules; it only keeps the physical starter layout smaller.
The terminal is the searchable front end
Use the terminal to search, insert, and retrieve items. A successful first test has two parts: an inserted item appears in the search results, and that item can be removed again. If either direction fails, inspect the power connection and cable path before changing cells or rebuilding the network.
Channels: when you need an ME Controller
A small controller-less network supports eight channels by default. Channels are the network’s connection budget for attached devices and branches. A compact drive or chest, one terminal, and a power connection are a good way to learn without immediately managing a controller.

When the network grows beyond that allowance, add an ME Controller. Controller faces provide more channels, but the exact capacity you can use depends on how the controller, cables, and branches are arranged. Cable type matters: ordinary cable carries a limited number of channels, while dense cable is used when a full 32-channel path is required.
A practical channel-planning method
- Draw the network as branches from the controller or controller-less core rather than as one tangled cable line.
- Count each attached device and identify which branch carries it.
- Use ordinary cable for small branches and reserve dense cable for a path that genuinely needs the full 32-channel capacity.
- Leave physical access to the controller and cable junctions so you can inspect the network after adding a device.
- Add one device at a time and open the terminal after each change. This makes the device that exhausts the available channels obvious.
Do not add a controller merely because a drive exists. Add one when your actual device count and branch layout exceed the controller-less eight-channel allowance or when you need the controller’s additional channel faces for a planned expansion.
Use existing chests with an ME Storage Bus
An ME Storage Bus lets the network treat an attached inventory as storage. This is useful when you already have a large chest wall, a specialized machine inventory, or a container that you do not want to empty into cells. The bus exposes that inventory to the terminal while the original inventory remains in place.
When to choose a Storage Bus
- Keep a bulk-material container in its original location while making it searchable from the terminal.
- Use a specialized inventory for items that should remain physically separated from general-purpose cells.
- Combine cell storage with existing containers during a gradual migration instead of moving every item in one session.
A Storage Bus consumes network resources and must fit your channel and power plan. Attach it to the inventory, connect it to the ME network, and then test with a distinctive item so you can tell whether the terminal is reading the external inventory or a cell.

Priority determines which eligible destination receives an inserted item. AE2 inserts into the highest-priority eligible storage first. When an item is removed, the network selects the lowest-priority storage. This lets you make a general cell bank the normal destination while reserving a chest or bus for a bulk, overflow, or specialized role.
A reliable priority arrangement
- Decide which storage should receive ordinary items first.
- Give that destination the higher priority among the eligible options.
- Give a bulk or overflow destination a lower priority.
- Insert a test item through the terminal and inspect the physical inventory that received it.
- Remove the item and verify that retrieval follows the priority behavior you intended.
Priority is not a capacity upgrade. It only changes selection order. If every eligible destination is full or cannot accept the item, changing priority will not create space.
Power, buffers, and transfer surges
AE2 networks have a finite energy buffer. Normal operations may work while a large one-time transfer fails because inserting many items in a single tick can require more energy than the network currently holds. The official energy documentation warns that this can drain the network and cause it to reboot.

It does not replace a suitable power source, but it gives the network more reserve to absorb ordinary transfer surges. Add one when bulk imports, mass crafting, or large terminal deposits repeatedly leave the network offline or rebooting.
Power troubleshooting order
- Confirm that the external power source is active and connected through a compatible AE2 power connection.
- Check that the cable path reaches the drive, chest, and terminal without a disconnected segment.
- Observe whether the failure occurs only during a large insertion. If so, suspect buffer exhaustion rather than a missing cable.
- Reduce the transfer size and retry. If small transfers work, add an Energy Cell or improve the upstream power arrangement.
- After a reboot, wait for the network to stabilize before starting another bulk transfer.
Common first-build problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The terminal does not open or shows no network items | No power, a broken cable path, or no cell installed in the drive or chest | Verify the energy connection, inspect every cable segment, and confirm the cells are in the storage block |
| The terminal opens but an inserted item is absent | The item was not accepted, the network is disconnected from storage, or the transfer exceeded available energy | Try one item, check the cell slots, and watch for a network reboot during larger transfers |
| An old chest is not searchable | No Storage Bus is attached or the bus is not connected to the powered network | Connect the bus to the inventory and network, then test with a distinctive item |
| Items go to an unexpected inventory | Another eligible storage has a higher priority | Review the priorities of the cell bank, Storage Bus, and other attached inventories |
| A new device stops working after expansion | The network exceeded its available channels | Count the branch connections, add an ME Controller when needed, and use dense cable for a full 32-channel path |
| The network repeatedly shuts down during mass movement | The energy buffer is being exhausted in a single tick | Split the transfer, check the power source, and add an Energy Cell for additional buffer |
A sensible expansion path
Stage 1: establish a known-good core
Use one ME Chest or Drive, a few 4k cells, one terminal, a short cable run, and a stable energy connection. Test insertion and retrieval before decorating or hiding the wiring.

Stage 2: add capacity without changing the rules
Add more Storage Cells to the drive or chest as your item count grows. Keep the cells together and label or document the physical layout if maintenance access will be difficult.
Stage 3: connect existing inventories
Add Storage Buses for containers that should remain in place. Use priorities to decide whether those inventories are normal destinations, bulk stores, or overflow. Add Import and Export Buses only when you need automatic movement rather than simple terminal access.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Stage 4: plan channels deliberately
When the network approaches its controller-less eight-channel allowance, stop adding devices blindly. Introduce an ME Controller, map branches, and choose ordinary or dense cable according to the number of channels each path must carry.
Stage 5: increase energy headroom
Once bulk transfers or automation create noticeable power dips, add Energy Cells and verify that the upstream source can keep the network charged. Buffer capacity prevents short surges from turning into a full network reboot; it is not a substitute for inadequate continuous generation.
Operating habits that prevent lost time
- Test every new cable branch with the terminal before hiding it behind walls.
- Keep at least one accessible point where you can inspect cells, buses, and the power connection.
- Use a distinctive test item when checking a Storage Bus so you can identify its physical destination immediately.
- Change one priority at a time and test insertion and removal after each change.
- Split very large deposits when the network is new; this distinguishes channel problems from energy-buffer problems.
- Check your modpack’s AE2 version before following a recipe or interface instruction from another Minecraft release.
A compact ME Drive or ME Chest, 4k cells, a powered cable network, and a terminal are enough to make AE2 useful immediately. Controller planning, Storage Buses, priorities, and Energy Cells then let the same core grow without forcing you to rebuild your storage every time your base expands.
