Arc Raiders design lead Virgil Watkins acknowledged that late spawns can leave players without enough time for a planned trial or other objective. He also explained why Embark kept the system: late arrivals may find valuable opportunities, and their presence can help keep raids populated and tense later on. Those are competing effects—not proof that every late join is worthwhile.
Why does Arc Raiders let players join a raid late?
In a GamesRadar+ interview published January 21, 2026, Watkins said the system was intended to stop raids from feeling empty in their later stages. He described the concern that after roughly ten minutes, remaining players might otherwise be “running around by yourself, effectively.” In his account, more players in the session help preserve suspense and danger.
The roughly ten-minute mark is Watkins’s explanation of the design rationale, not a measured population threshold or a guarantee about when a raid changes. GamesRadar+ reported that late arrivals could enter with roughly 17 to 25 minutes left, but that range is not established as a fixed rule for every match.
What is the downside for players with a plan?
A late arrival can undermine a time-sensitive objective before the player gets a real chance to pursue it. Watkins acknowledged the frustration of loading in to complete a trial, realizing there is too little time, and leaving. He called that aspect “definitely not great.”

- ARC Raiders Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the following content: The Wanderer Set, including the following cosmetic items: “Valente” Outfit" “Pathfinder” Backpack,“Blanket Roll” Backpack Attachment.
- Plus: Character Cosmetic, Finger Gun Rapid Fire Emote, Cowboy Scrappy Body Type and Skin, 2 400 Raider Tokens.
That is the core tradeoff: keeping a raid active does not give a late joiner back the time needed for a particular trial, key, or other planned task. Watkins said he would want to address first the pain point where a player arrives with a dedicated purpose and the late join undercuts it. That was a priority he expressed in the interview, not confirmation that Embark has shipped a fix or committed to a roadmap change.
What can late joiners gain by staying?
Watkins said later arrivals may benefit from what earlier players have left behind or set in motion: remnants of fights, larger drones to take on, and access to high-value areas. He also said late joiners “economically profit way more than people who aren’t.”
Rank #2
That comparison is Watkins’s characterization of the studio’s findings, not a quantified result. The interview provides no percentage, sample size, or methodology, so it does not show how much more late joiners earn or establish that they always come out ahead. These possible opportunities can make a late raid worth continuing for some players, but they do not make a missed objective achievable.

Watkins said Embark expected players to switch to a “plan B or C” when the original plan no longer fits the time left. In practice, the alternatives he described include looking for loot, taking on a larger drone, visiting a high-value area, or interacting with players already in the session.

- Your objective needs the time you no longer have: The interview does not suggest that alternative loot or combat restores that lost opportunity. Whether to leave or continue depends on how much value you place on the original task versus what remains available.
- You are open to changing activities: Remaining fights, loot, and encounters with other players may give you a reason to stay, though the potential payoff is not guaranteed.
The interview explains the design rationale and Watkins’s intended area for improvement as of January 21, 2026. It does not establish whether Embark has since changed matchmaking, raid timing, trials, or other objectives.
