In With A Trace, Shani’s Blue Gate quest, investigate the small rounded joint beside a detached leg on the southwest side of the large ARC wreck at Barren Clearing. Then go to Adorned Wreckage and inspect the yellow communications terminal beside the antenna. These clues advance the quest, but they do not identify who brought down the machines.
Where to find the signs at Barren Clearing
Barren Clearing is in the western to northwestern part of The Blue Gate, west of Raider’s Refuge. Head for the large downed ARC machine at the clearing. The objective tracker may update before you reach the central wreck, so use the location and the wreck itself to guide your search rather than treating an update as proof that you are already beside the clue. Shacknews and All Things How describe the clue on the wreck’s southwest side.
Inspect the detached leg joint
- Approach the large ARC wreck at Barren Clearing and move around to its southwest side.
- Look near a detached leg for a small, pale, rounded metal joint—a ball-shaped piece beside a leg segment.
- Aim at the joint and use the on-screen Investigate prompt.
This is the “signs” step. It is a small object at the wreck, not writing on the machine’s painted body. Guides from PC Gamer and Shacknews describe the rounded joint as the interactable clue.
Where to find the communications device
After investigating the joint, continue to Adorned Wreckage, a separate named location south of Barren Clearing. Search beside the antenna or along the side of the wreck complex for a yellow computer terminal, then interact with it to inspect the communications device. This is a second quest step, not another part of the leg clue. Shacknews and All Things How place the terminal at Adorned Wreckage.

Quest order and rewards
With A Trace is assigned by Shani and takes place on The Blue Gate. The quest sequence is:
- Reach Barren Clearing.
- Find and investigate the signs by the detached leg.
- Inspect Adorned Wreckage.
- Inspect the communications device at the yellow terminal.
The ARC Raiders Wiki transcribes Shani’s quest dialogue as: “See what you can find out about whomever brought down that deforesting machine. We need to know whether they’re friend or foe.” The wiki’s quest entry and Shacknews’ walkthrough list the rewards as one Looting Mk. 2 augment and one Medium Shield.

If the interaction does not register
- At the wreck: Check the southwest side and aim directly at the small rounded joint beside the detached leg until the Investigate prompt appears.
- At the terminal: Check the tracked objective. The communications-device step follows the signs clue, so the terminal may not respond as expected until that earlier objective has advanced.
- If the trigger seems stuck: All Things How recommends repeating the clue-to-terminal sequence in one visit. Treat that as a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed requirement: the ARC Raiders Score quest reference lists completion as possible across multiple rounds.
Does this quest reveal who brought down the machines?
No identity is established by the clue locations or the walkthroughs. Shani’s dialogue frames the investigation as finding out whether the unknown actor is friend or foe; finding and inspecting the objects advances that investigation, but it does not name the person or group responsible.
