Former communications director Margaret Krohn alleged workers were owed final pay and other compensation, but the available reporting and court records do not establish that every employee went unpaid or that a court found a wage violation. The studio’s dispute continued into August, when a federal judge appointed a limited receiver to safeguard assets—not to restart the game.
What happened to Ashes of Creation?
The shutdown became public on January 31, 2026, amid abrupt layoffs, a WARN notice and the resignation of co-founder and former CEO and creative director Steven Sharif. The California WARN notice was reported by Game Developer and PCGamesN as listing a permanent closure affecting 123 employees.

The layoff figures reported at different points are not interchangeable. Krohn said she was told on January 28 that 100 developers would be laid off. The 123 figure came from the later WARN notice and refers to affected employees recorded there. One is her account of an initial planned developer layoff; the other is the notice’s reported count.
Why did Intrepid Studios shut down?
The reasons for the closure are disputed; the available accounts do not establish a definitive explanation. Sharif said control of the company had shifted away from him and that he resigned in protest because he could not ethically support actions directed by the board. He also said senior leaders resigned after him and that the board then proceeded with mass layoffs. Those are Sharif’s public claims, not independent findings about what caused the shutdown.

Krohn described the sudden layoff sequence from an employee’s perspective. A director’s letter reportedly promised a development update for February 13, shortly before the January 31 announcement. That contrast helps explain why the layoffs appeared abrupt to staff, but it does not establish what management knew or intended. Allegations made in court filings are likewise claims by parties to a dispute unless a court rules on them.
Were Ashes of Creation developers laid off without final pay?
Krohn alleged that employees would not receive final paychecks, the 60 days of notice or pay she said were required under the WARN Act, PTO payouts, or other compensation owed. Her statement is the basis for the “without final pay” claim; it is not a court’s finding that every affected employee went unpaid.
Two former employees filed a WARN Act class action on February 5, 2026. A docket listing retrieved July 20 showed amended pleadings and an ongoing case. The available docket information does not establish a final judgment, whether individual employees were later paid, or the amount owed to any worker. A lawsuit alleging a violation is not proof that the violation occurred.

What happened after the layoffs?
On August 27, 2026, a federal judge appointed a limited receiver over Intrepid Studios. The order gave the receiver authority to safeguard intellectual property and related assets, oversee any foreclosure sale, and analyze secured debt. It is a court action concerning preservation and oversight; it does not resolve the wage allegations or announce that a sale has occurred.
The receiver’s appointment also does not mean Ashes of Creation will resume development, move to a new developer, or relaunch. The order describes duties involving company assets, not a plan for the game.
Can Ashes of Creation still be played or refunded?
February 2026 reporting said the game had been removed from Steam sale after the layoffs. That report does not establish the game’s current purchase availability, server status, or refund options. Those details can change, and the August receiver order was not a consumer availability announcement. Check the current Steam listing and any official game or platform notices for the latest information; the material available through October 4, 2026 does not establish a current refund policy or a relaunch.
