Embark describes it as a traversal gadget for climbing to hard-to-reach places, abseiling off buildings, and swinging over large gaps. Those functions can help you choose a route or reposition, but the official descriptions do not establish specific controls, anchor rules, item stats, or combat effects.
What the Grappling Hook is for
Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 update notes list the Grappling Hook as a new item. In its Frozen Trail preview, Embark says it lets Raiders “climb hard to reach spots, abseil off buildings, and swing over large gaps.” These are the developer’s stated traversal uses, not a promise that every surface or gap can be grappled.

How to use it for traversal
Reach elevated routes
Use the Grappling Hook when a route calls for reaching a hard-to-access spot. Consider whether the elevated position actually helps your route before using it; the published description does not specify valid anchor points or guarantee that a particular climb will work.

Abseiling off a building is one of the uses Embark names. It may offer an alternative to taking a conventional route down, but the official description does not explain how to start or end a descent or which buildings support it.

Cross a gap
Embark also identifies swinging over large gaps as a use. Treat this as a possible traversal option rather than a guarantee: the preview does not define a maximum gap, required attachment point, or other conditions for a successful swing.
Using it during combat: what is confirmed
The documented functions are about movement. Reaching elevation, descending from a building, or crossing a gap could change your position during an encounter, but that is a tactical inference—not a verified combat effect. The official material does not say whether the hook can damage or attach to enemies, interrupt them, evade attacks, break line of sight, or make a Raider invulnerable.

It also does not establish how incoming damage affects a grapple, whether the movement is audible, or how quickly the gadget can be used again. Do not rely on it as a confirmed escape or attack mechanic without checking its behavior in the current game.
Controls and Grappling Hook stats
The Frozen Trail preview and update notes do not specify keyboard-and-mouse or controller inputs for firing, attaching, climbing, descending, releasing, or stowing the Grappling Hook. They also do not state its range, durability use, power cost, or recipe. Check the current in-game controls and item details for your platform rather than inferring them from another gadget.

Do not confuse it with the Snap Hook
Embark says the new Grappling Hook prompted a clearer identity for the two mobility gadgets rather than treating one as a linear upgrade. The Frozen Trail 2.0 notes list these balance changes for the Snap Hook, not the Grappling Hook:
| Snap Hook stat | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 20 m | 18 m |
| Durability use per use | 2% | 4% |
| Power cost | 50 | 60 |
These are Snap Hook changes reported in the October 8, 2026 update notes; they are not Grappling Hook specifications. Frozen Trail also changed default gamepad mapping generally, so check the current platform-specific controls rather than assuming the two gadgets share inputs.
